MAKAUT Syllabus for B.Tech and Other Courses

EntranceWest BengalB.Tech and moreUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The MAKAUT syllabus is the semester wise course plan set by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal, formerly known as WBUT, for B.Tech, BCA, BBA, MCA, MBA and its other programmes. For engineering, it follows the AICTE model curriculum: a common first year of science, maths and basic engineering, then branch subjects, electives and projects up to the eighth semester.

Thousands of students in affiliated colleges across the state study from the same university syllabus and sit the same end semester papers, which is why knowing the structure early helps. Below you will find how a typical B.Tech programme is laid out, how marks and grades work, and how to locate the exact file for your branch and admission year.

How the MAKAUT syllabus is organised

Each programme has its own document, issued branch by branch and revised from time to time. A document lists every semester's courses with a code, the lecture, tutorial and practical hours per week (written as L-T-P), and the credits. After that table come the unit wise contents of every paper, suggested textbooks and the course outcomes.

Course codes tell you the type of paper at a glance. BS stands for basic science, ES for engineering science, HM or HSMC for humanities and management, PCC for a professional core course, PEC for a professional elective, OEC for an open elective, MC for a mandatory non credit course and PROJ for project work.

Syllabi are tied to the year you were admitted. A student who joined in an earlier session may follow an older scheme than a fresher, so always download the file that matches your batch.

First year B.Tech subjects

The first two semesters are broadly common to all branches. In the scheme effective from the latest session for computer science and IT, the first year includes:

Typical first year B.Tech courses under MAKAUT
SemesterTheoryLabs and practice
Semester 1Physics or Chemistry, Mathematics IA, Basic Electrical EngineeringPhysics or Chemistry lab, electrical lab, Engineering Graphics or Workshop
Semester 2Chemistry or Physics, Mathematics IIA, Programming for Problem Solving, EnglishScience lab, programming lab, Graphics or Workshop, Language lab

Students are split into groups, so one group takes physics in the first semester and chemistry in the second while the other group does the reverse. Credits for these two semesters come to about 17.5 and 20.5 in that scheme. Other branches can differ in a course or two.

Branch subjects from semester 3 to 8

From the second year, your branch takes over. The CSIT branch scheme shows how this works:

  • Semester 3: Analog and Digital Electronics, Data Structures and Algorithms, Discrete Mathematics, Formal Language and Automata Theory, Economics for Engineers, with an IT workshop lab
  • Semester 4: Computer Organisation, Computer Networks, Compiler Design, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Biology, Industrial Management, and Environmental Sciences as a mandatory course
  • Semester 5: Software Engineering, Computer Architecture, Operating Systems, an advanced programming course and the first professional elective, plus Constitution of India or Indian knowledge tradition as a mandatory course
  • Semesters 6 to 8: more electives, open electives such as operations research or cyber law, project management and entrepreneurship, and project work carrying 6 credits each in the final two semesters

Mechanical, civil, electrical, ECE and other branches follow the same pattern of core, electives and projects with their own subjects. Check your branch file for the exact list.

MAKAUT syllabus marks and evaluation

Every course has two parts to its score: marks earned through the semester and the end semester university exam. For theory papers, the end semester exam carries about 70 marks, and the rest comes from internal tests, assignments, quizzes and attendance. Practical courses give a bigger share to continuous work in the lab. The exact split for each paper is printed in its syllabus page, and it has varied between schemes, so read it for your own courses.

Mandatory courses such as Environmental Sciences carry no credit, yet you still have to clear them to get your degree.

SGPA, DGPA and percentage

You earn a grade point in each course and an SGPA for each semester. At the end, the university works out a degree grade point average, or DGPA. To convert DGPA into a percentage, MAKAUT uses the formula: percentage equals (DGPA minus 0.75) multiplied by 10. So a DGPA of 8.25 equals 75 percent, and 7.25 equals 65 percent.

Sayan, a third year ECE student in Durgapur, is filling a campus placement form that asks for a percentage. His DGPA so far is 7.9. He subtracts 0.75 to get 7.15 and multiplies by 10, so he writes 71.5 percent and attaches the university's conversion note in case the recruiter asks.

Studying smart with the university syllabus

Since end semester papers are set from the syllabus units, use the document as a checklist. Tick off each unit only after you have solved its numericals or written a full answer on it. Previous university question papers show how marks are spread across short and long questions; many colleges keep them in their library or on their own portal.

  • Keep the textbooks named in the syllabus as your first reference, since examiners frame questions from them.
  • In lab courses, the final practical exam usually repeats experiments from your record, so keep that notebook complete.
  • For electives, pick subjects that match your placement or higher study plans. If you plan to write GATE, core papers like algorithms, operating systems and networks line up with the GATE CSE syllabus.

Where to find your exact course file

Open the MAKAUT official website and look under the academic or syllabus section, choose your programme, then your branch and admission session. Autonomous colleges under the university may publish their own regulations and syllabi, so if your college is autonomous, collect the file from your department instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is MAKAUT the same as WBUT?

Yes. West Bengal University of Technology was renamed Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. Older certificates and documents may still carry the WBUT name.

Does the MAKAUT B.Tech syllabus follow AICTE?

Yes, the engineering schemes are based on the AICTE model curriculum, with credit based courses, electives, mandatory courses and project work. The university adapts it and revises the files from time to time.

How do I convert MAKAUT DGPA to percentage?

Subtract 0.75 from your DGPA and multiply the result by 10. A DGPA of 8.0 becomes 72.5 percent.

Do all MAKAUT colleges teach one common syllabus?

Affiliated colleges follow the university syllabus and sit the common end semester exams. Autonomous colleges may frame their own syllabus within university rules, so check with your department.

Where is the MAKAUT syllabus for BCA or MBA?

Each programme has its own syllabus which MAKAUT posts online under course and session. Pick your programme and admission year to get the right file.

How many semesters does a MAKAUT B.Tech have?

Eight semesters spread over four years, with a common first year, branch core courses from the third semester and electives and projects in the final year.
