The WBJEE syllabus covers class 11 and 12 mathematics, physics and chemistry, tested in two OMR papers: Paper 1 is 75 maths questions for 100 marks, and Paper 2 is 40 physics and 40 chemistry questions for another 100, each paper lasting 2 hours.
What sets this state engineering entrance apart is its three-category marking, where some questions have negative marks, some carry double weight and some allow partial credit. Since maths alone is half the total, your plan needs a different balance from the one you use for the JEE Main syllabus. Further down are the paper layout, the scoring rules worked out with examples, the full syllabus of WBJEE subject by subject, chapter lists for all three subjects and a plan for the final months.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 are held on the same day in separate sessions. Each question has four options, and you darken one circle (or more, in Category III) with a ballpoint pen. Because physics and chemistry share one 2-hour sitting, you need about 90 seconds a question there, while maths gives you a little longer per item.
WBJEE marking scheme explained
- Category I: only one option is right. A right answer earns 1; a wrong one loses 1/4.
- Category II: only one option is right. A right answer earns 2; a wrong one loses 1/2.
- Category III: one or more options may be right. Mark all the right ones and you get the full 2 marks. Mark some of the right ones and none of the wrong ones and you get 2 multiplied by the share of right options you marked. Mark any wrong option and the question scores zero. There is no negative mark.
Marking more than one circle in Category I or II counts as a wrong answer and attracts the penalty.
In practice this means you should attempt nearly every Category III question with only the options you are sure of, and be careful with guesses in Category I where the penalty ratio is the highest.

- Pollution chemistry, and salt analysis with simple quantitative methods
Organic chemistry
- General principles, isomerism and reaction types; saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons including aromatic benzene
- Haloalkanes and haloarenes; compounds with oxygen such as alcohols, phenols, ethers, carbonyl compounds and acids
- Amines, nitro compounds, cyanides and diazonium salts
- Carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids and polymers
Eligibility in brief
- Class 12 passed with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus one more subject such as Chemistry, Computer Science or Biology.
- At least 45% in those three subjects together for general candidates, and 40% for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B and PwD candidates.
- Age 17 must be reached by 31 December in the admission year. Most courses set no ceiling on age, Marine Engineering being an exception.
- West Bengal domicile matters for state quota and reserved seats.
Check the eligibility table of the current bulletin before you fill the form, since rules for pharmacy and some special courses differ.
Plan your preparation around the 100 maths marks
- Start with calculus and coordinate geometry. Together they make up a large share of the maths paper, and once settled they also help physics.
- Learn to read Category III questions. Practise multi-correct items from JEE-style books and mark only the options you can prove.
- Physics and chemistry as one paper. Since they share a sitting, practise mixed 80-question sets in 2 hours so your time per subject settles naturally.
- Use NCERT for chemistry. Inorganic facts and organic name reactions come almost straight from the class 11 and 12 textbooks.
- Full mocks from the last three months. Sit Paper 1 and Paper 2 on the same day with a gap, as the real exam runs.
Many students write WBJEE alongside national tests; the JEE Advanced syllabus overlaps heavily, while our entrance exams section gathers further state-run tests, for example the OJEE syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
What is the WBJEE marking scheme?
Category I questions give 1 mark with a 1/4 penalty, Category II give 2 marks with a 1/2 penalty, and Category III give up to 2 marks with partial credit and no penalty. Marking any wrong option in Category III scores zero for that question.
Does WBJEE follow the JEE Main chapter list?
Both are built on class 11 and 12 PCM and overlap a lot. WBJEE follows the board's own list and gives maths double the weight of physics or chemistry, so the balance of your study should change.
How many questions are in WBJEE?
155 in total: 75 in mathematics and 40 each in physics and chemistry. The two papers carry 100 marks each.
Is WBJEE online or offline?
It has been an offline OMR exam in recent cycles, with answers marked using a blue or black ballpoint pen. Confirm the mode in the information bulletin.
Can a student from another state take WBJEE?
Yes, candidates from outside West Bengal can apply, but state quota and reserved seats in government colleges are linked to West Bengal domicile.
Which subject should I focus on most for WBJEE?
Mathematics, since it alone carries 100 of the 200 marks. Physics and chemistry share the other 100 equally.
