The AKTU syllabus for B.Tech first year, in the scheme published for the newest batches, has 21 credits in each semester, built on the AICTE model curriculum and the National Education Policy, with every theory course marked 30 internal and 70 in the end semester exam. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University sets this course for all its affiliated engineering colleges across Uttar Pradesh.
Below you will find the first year course list, how marks and credits work, unit level topics for the main maths paper, and how to find the syllabus for later years and other programmes. Students from older batches follow the scheme of the year they were admitted, which differs, so always match the document to your batch.

Who the AKTU syllabus applies to
AKTU affiliates a large number of engineering, pharmacy, management and computer application colleges in Uttar Pradesh. The university publishes an evaluation scheme and syllabus for each programme and year: B.Tech, B.Pharm, MBA, MCA, M.Tech and others. Every affiliated college teaches from the same document, and the end semester papers are set centrally, so a student in one city sits the same exam as one in another.
The first year scheme gets the most searches because it is common across many branches. From the second year on, each branch has its own document with core subjects, electives and labs.
Syllabus AKTU first semester courses
| Course | Type | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum Physics and Applications, or Applied Chemistry for Smart Systems | Basic science | 3 |
| Calculus and Linear Algebra | Basic science | 4 |
| Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering, or of Electronics Engineering | Engineering science | 3 |
| Programming Languages | Engineering science | 3 |
| Introduction to Indian Knowledge System, or Professional Communication and Technical Writing | Humanities | 2 |
| A computing elective, or Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering | Engineering science | 2 |
| Physics or chemistry lab, electrical or electronics lab | Labs | 1 each |
| Engineering drawing lab, or innovation and design thinking lab | Lab | 2 |
| Language lab or environment course, general proficiency | Non credit | 0 |
The "or" pairs swap between the two semesters: if you take physics in semester I you take chemistry in semester II, and so on, depending on the group your college puts you in.
Second semester changes
Semester II keeps the same shape and the same 21 credits. Two courses change: Numerical Methods (4 credits) takes the place of Calculus and Linear Algebra, and Essentials of Data Structures (3 credits) follows Programming Languages. You also take the other half of each pair you did not take in semester I. A three week induction programme runs at the start of the first year.
Marks, credits and passing rules
- Theory course: 30 marks internal (class tests, assignments, attendance and similar parts) and 70 marks in the end semester exam.
- Lab course: 50 internal marks and 50 in the practical exam.
- General proficiency: 50 internal marks, no credit, but compulsory.
- Activity points: regular four year students must collect 100 AICTE activity points for the degree; lateral entry students need fewer.
To pass a theory subject, AKTU has generally required at least 30 percent of the end semester marks (21 out of 70) and 40 percent overall once internal marks are added. A limited number of grace marks may be given each year. These rules sit in the university's ordinance, so read the current version or ask your college's exam cell.
Unit wise topics: Calculus and Linear Algebra
The four credit maths course is the heaviest theory paper of semester I, and it shows how AKTU arranges every subject into five units.
- Multivariable calculus: limits and continuity in two variables, partial derivatives, Euler's theorem, Jacobians, maxima and minima, Lagrange multipliers.
- Multiple integrals: double and triple integrals, change of order and of variables, Beta and Gamma functions, Dirichlet's integral, area and volume.
- Vector calculus: gradient, divergence and curl, directional derivatives, vector integration, Stokes' and Gauss divergence theorems.
- Matrices: Hermitian and unitary matrices, rank by echelon form, Gauss elimination and Gauss Seidel, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalisation.
- Vector spaces: subspaces, linear dependence, basis and dimension.
End semester papers usually cover all five units, so skipping one is risky even if it looks hard.
How to study for AKTU end semester exams
Because the papers are set centrally, old question papers show you better than anything else how each unit gets examined. Collect the last few years from your college library or the university's own releases and see our AKTU previous papers guide, which explains a good way to work through them.
- Print the scheme for your batch and tick each unit topic once you can solve questions on it.
- Secure the 30 internal marks with regular class tests and assignments; they decide whether you are relaxed or stressed in the final exam.
- For maths and physics, practise derivations and standard numericals from the unit list rather than reading theory alone.
- For programming, write and run code in the lab every week. Theory questions often ask you to trace or write short programs.
Beyond first year and other programmes
Second, third and fourth year schemes list branch subjects, open electives and project work. B.Pharm, MBA and MCA have their own evaluation schemes, also on the university website under its syllabus section. If you are thinking about postgraduate study after B.Tech, compare your branch subjects with the GATE syllabus, which covers much of the same engineering core. For engineering entrance routes into AKTU colleges, see the entrance exams hub and the JEE Main syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
Is the AKTU first year syllabus the same for all branches?
The first year scheme is largely common, with physics or chemistry and similar pairs split between semesters by group. The newest document is described as the CSE stream scheme, so students of other branches should confirm their own list.
How are AKTU theory papers marked?
Each theory course is out of 100: 30 internal marks from the college and 70 in the end semester exam set by the university.
What are the passing marks in AKTU?
AKTU has generally required 30 percent of the end semester marks and 40 percent overall in a subject. Check the current ordinance for grace marks and carry over rules.
Where is the authentic AKTU syllabus posted?
The university publishes evaluation schemes and syllabus PDFs for every programme and year on aktu.ac.in. Pick the document that matches your admission batch.
Do older batches follow the new syllabus?
No. Each batch continues on the scheme under which it was admitted unless the university announces otherwise, so a second year student should not use the newest first year document.
What are AICTE activity points?
They are points earned through activities such as community work, clubs and events. Regular B.Tech students need 100 for the degree under the current scheme; they carry no credit.
