JKP constable syllabus and exam pattern

Defence and police10th pass100 MCQsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The JKP constable syllabus for executive, armed, IRP and SDRF posts is a single 2 hour objective test with 100 one mark questions drawn from General English, national GK and current affairs, GK of the Union Territory, numbers and reasoning, and computer basics. Those who clear it face a physical standard test and an endurance test, which are pass or fail rounds.

JKSSB, the state level services board, recruits these constables for the Home Department. Ranking depends on the written marks together with any NCC weightage, which is why the paper deserves most of your study hours.

JKP constable syllabus and selection stages

  1. Written test: objective questions on an OMR sheet. The paper was reported to be set in English only, so build your vocabulary early.
  2. Physical standard test (PST): everyone is measured for height, and men also for chest. Roughly six candidates per post in each category were shortlisted for this round.
  3. Physical endurance test (PET): a timed race and other events. Pass or fail only.
  4. Medical board and certificate checks before the appointment letter.

Holders of NCC certificates get a bonus on the maximum marks: C certificate holders were given 5 percent, B holders 3 percent and A holders 2 percent in the last advertisement.

JKP constable exam pattern

Written test for executive, armed, IRP and SDRF constables
SectionQuestionsShare of paper
General English25A quarter
GK and current affairs of India25A quarter
General knowledge, J&K focus10One tenth
Numerical ability and reasoning25A quarter
Basic concepts of computers15Fifteen percent
Total100100 marks, 2 hours

Each correct answer earns a mark, and reports put the penalty for a wrong one at a quarter. So four careless guesses undo one good answer; on the OMR sheet, bubble a shaky question only when your rough logic has already knocked out half the options.

Telecom constables take a different paper: 60 general aptitude questions and 40 technical questions on radio communication, modulation and mobile communication basics. Photographer constables also face technical questions on cameras and digital photography.

Topic list for each section

English language (25)

  • Tenses, prepositions, articles and subject and verb agreement
  • Building correct sentences and finding the faulty part
  • Vocabulary drills: synonyms, antonyms, and swapping a long description for its single word

GK and current affairs of India (25)

  • Indian history, especially the freedom struggle
  • Physical geography of India, rivers, states and capitals
  • Polity: the Constitution, Parliament, rights and duties

J&K general knowledge (10)

  • History and rulers of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions
  • Geography: rivers, lakes, passes, districts and climate
  • Culture, shrines, festivals and languages
  • Major developments and schemes, including topics such as the Indus Waters Treaty and the RTI Act listed in the syllabus

Physical standards and endurance test

Physical rules reported in the last advertisement
TestMenWomen
Minimum height5 feet 6 inches5 feet 2 inches
Chest32 inches, 33.5 expandedNot measured
Long race1600 metres in 6 minutes 30 seconds1000 metres, time as notified

Reports also mention push ups and a 4 kg shot put among the events. Height relaxation exists for some categories and areas. All physical figures can change, so take the final numbers from your own advertisement.

The race time for women and the exact list of field events differ between reports of the last notice. Treat the JKSSB advertisement as the only final word on physical standards.

Who can apply

  • Domicile: a valid Jammu and Kashmir domicile certificate.
  • Qualification: matriculation (10th) for executive, armed or IRP, SDRF and driver constables; 10+2 with science for telecom; 10+2 science plus a computer course and experience for photographers.
  • Age: from 18 up to 28 years as reckoned in the last notice, with higher limits for in service police personnel and ex servicemen.

Candidates who studied under the state board can revise the basics of English, maths and science from the JKBOSE class 10 syllabus, which matches the level of this paper.

Where your marks come from

Three sections of 25 questions each make up three quarters of the paper. English is the one many candidates from Urdu or Hindi medium schools underrate, and it is often where toppers pull ahead. J&K GK has only 10 questions, but they are predictable once you have a short list of facts on rivers, districts, shrines, dynasties and recent schemes.

Sajad from Anantnag has three months before the written test and runs every morning for the PET. He gives his first hour to English grammar and 20 vocabulary words, his second to arithmetic and reasoning drills, and keeps evenings for GK, with Sunday kept for a complete mock of 100 questions, bubbled on a printed answer sheet.

Computers carry 15 marks for fairly basic content, so a fortnight of steady revision can lift your score more than another month of general knowledge.

Books and study material

Use school level books for English grammar and arithmetic, NCERT history, geography and civics books from middle and high school for India GK, and any standard J&K general knowledge compilation for the state section. For computers, a basic fundamentals book is enough. Keep a running notebook of national and J&K news from a daily paper.

Other JKSSB papers share some of this content, so see the JKSSB junior assistant syllabus. Neighbouring police papers, for instance the Punjab constable test, plus the other forces covered in defence and police exams, are useful for extra practice.

Frequently asked questions

Does the JKSSB constable paper have a minus mark rule?

Yes. The last advertisement was reported to take away a quarter mark per incorrect response, while unanswered questions cost nothing.

In which language is the JKSSB constable paper set?

Reports of the last advertisement say the paper was in English only. Check your admit card and notice, as the board can change this.

Are the PST and PET scores added to my final rank?

They are not. Both physical rounds simply have to be cleared. Merit rests on the written test, with an NCC bonus where it applies.

What is the qualification for JKP constable?

Class 10 for executive, armed or IRP, SDRF and driver posts. Telecom and photographer constables need 10+2 with science, and photographers also need a computer course and experience.

How many J&K GK questions are asked?

The paper sets aside 10 of its 100 questions for Jammu and Kashmir specific general knowledge.

Can candidates from outside Jammu and Kashmir apply?

No. A valid Jammu and Kashmir domicile certificate is required for these posts.
