Haryana TET levels 1 to 3: 150 marks, pedagogy, languages, GS and subject

HTET Syllabus for PRT, TGT and PGT

TeachingPRT, TGT, PGTNo negative marksUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The HTET syllabus covers three levels of the Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test, PRT (level 1), TGT (level 2) and PGT (level 3), and each level is a single 150 question paper worth 150 marks with no negative marking. Every level shares 90 marks of common ground: pedagogy and child development, the two languages, plus a general studies block with aptitude, reasoning and Haryana GK.

The remaining 60 marks change by level. PRT candidates face mathematics and environmental studies, while TGT and PGT candidates are tested on the subject they want to teach. Clearing HTET is a licence, not an appointment: the certificate lets you compete in Haryana's teacher recruitment when posts are advertised.

HTET syllabus at a glance: three levels, one format

One cycle lets you take one, two or all three levels, provided your qualifications fit each. The levels are held in separate shifts so the papers do not clash. These rules hold for every level:

  • Objective questions only, four options each.
  • Wrong answers are not penalised, so leave nothing blank.
  • Each level's paper is 150 minutes long.
  • The result is a qualifying certificate, not a rank list for jobs.
The validity of the HTET certificate has been changed by the state more than once. Check the information bulletin for your cycle for the current rule rather than relying on old figures.

Notice that the subject block for TGT and PGT is 60 marks, as much as pedagogy and languages combined. That single section usually decides whether a TGT or PGT candidate clears the 90 mark line.

Common sections: what each one tests

Child development and pedagogy (30)

The age group shifts by level: roughly 6 to 11 years for PRT, 11 to 16 for TGT and 14 to 17 for PGT. Expect questions on growth and development, theories of learning and their classroom use, individual differences, inclusive education and learners with special needs, motivation, assessment for learning, and the qualities of a good facilitator.

Hindi and English (15 each)

Unseen passages, grammar, vocabulary, and correct usage. In Hindi this means sandhi, samas, muhavare, paryayvachi and vilom shabd; in English, tenses, voice, narration, prepositions, synonyms and antonyms. The language sections stay at a general level for all three papers.

General studies (30)

  • Quantitative aptitude: number system, BODMAS and simplification, percentages, ratios, profit with loss, interest, work and time problems, averages and basic mensuration.
  • Reasoning: coding and decoding, series of numbers and letters, analogy, blood relations, direction sense and non verbal figures.
  • Haryana GK: the state's history, geography, districts and rivers, culture, folk arts and festivals, economy and agriculture, and well known schemes of the state.

Level specific syllabus

Level 1 (PRT): mathematics at the primary level (numbers, operations, fractions, shapes, measurement, data handling) and environmental studies (family, food, water, shelter, plants and animals, travel, health), each paired with pedagogy questions on teaching these ideas to young children.

Level 2 (TGT): 60 questions on the subject you choose (maths, science, social studies, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Punjabi and so on), pitched around the class 6 to 10 standard, along with pedagogy of that subject.

Level 3 (PGT): 60 questions on your subject at senior secondary and graduation depth. Subjects include physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, history, geography, political science, economics, commerce, computer science, English, Hindi and others named in the bulletin.

The board attaches a subject wise syllabus to the information bulletin. Download it for your subject and use it as a checklist, since topic lists for some PGT subjects are long.

Where marks are easiest to collect

With wrong answers free and a fixed pass line of 90, the goal is a safe total rather than a top rank. A sensible target split for a TGT candidate looks like this: 20 or more in pedagogy, 22 or more across the two languages, 18 in general studies, and the remaining 30 plus from the subject block. PRT candidates can lean on mathematics and EVS, which are at primary level and score well with practice.

Haryana GK is a small 10 mark section, but candidates from outside the state often lose most of it. A focused fortnight on districts, rivers, the battles of Panipat, folk dances and state schemes fixes that.

A ten week study plan

  1. Weeks 1 to 3: pedagogy theories and the subject block, two hours a day, with notes in your own words.
  2. Weeks 4 to 5: language grammar in both papers plus 10 quantitative and reasoning questions daily.
  3. Weeks 6 to 7: Haryana GK and a second pass of your subject using NCERT books of the relevant classes.
  4. Weeks 8 to 10: one full 150 question paper every other day in 2.5 hours, with the next day spent on wrong answers.
Sunita from Rohtak cleared level 1 but missed level 3 in English by four marks. On her second try she gave the first half hour of each study day to the PGT English literature list in the bulletin, and solved past HTET papers only for the 60 subject questions. She crossed 90 with a margin of eleven.

Books and official sources

For subject content, NCERT textbooks of classes 1 to 12, matched to your level, take you most of the way. For pedagogy, a standard teacher education text on child development and learning works well, and the CTET style of questions is close to what HTET asks; the CTET syllabus page explains that overlap. For Haryana GK, the state government's own publications and district profiles are reliable.

Comparing other state tests helps if you plan to apply outside Haryana: see the TET syllabus overview, the REET syllabus for Rajasthan and the teaching exams hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is there negative marking in HTET?

Not at all. You gain one mark per correct option and an incorrect one loses nothing, so mark an answer for all 150.

What score is needed to qualify HTET?

The general category line is 60 percent, or 90 of the 150 marks. SC and differently abled candidates of Haryana need 55 percent, about 83 marks. SC and differently abled candidates from other states need 60 percent.

How is the HTET PGT syllabus different from TGT?

The common 90 marks are the same in pattern, but the child development section targets older learners and the 60 subject questions go up to senior secondary and graduation level.

Is Haryana GK asked in all three levels?

Yes. Ten questions on Haryana general knowledge appear in the general studies section of PRT, TGT and PGT alike.

Can I appear for more than one HTET level?

You can, provided you are eligible for every level you apply for. The board schedules the levels on separate shifts so that you can sit them all.

Is HTET held online?

Recent cycles were held offline on OMR sheets. The mode is stated in the bulletin and admit card for each cycle.
