The DSSSB syllabus is built on one common block, Section A, which checks your general knowledge, reasoning, number skills and both Hindi and English, and a second block, Section B, set on the subject or qualification of the post you apply for. The Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board fills teacher, clerical, technical and support posts for the Delhi government, and the exam you face depends on the scheme listed for that post: a one tier test for most posts, and two or three tiers for some senior or technical roles.
Teacher aspirants form the largest group. A TGT paper is 200 marks in two hours, a PGT paper is 300 marks in three hours, and every wrong answer costs a quarter mark, so accuracy matters as much as coverage.

How DSSSB decides which exam you take
The Board follows an examination scheme that groups every post into a type. Each advertisement tells you the type for your post:
- One tier, general: for posts such as LDC, stenographer, warder and driver. A single 200 mark paper of general sections.
- One tier, technical or teaching: for posts such as primary teacher, nurse, librarian and data entry operator. Section A general plus Section B on your subject.
- Two tier: Tier 1 screens candidates and Tier 2 decides selection. Used for some assistant level, engineering and legal posts.
- Three tier: Tier 2 plus an interview, for a small number of senior posts.
A skill test, such as typing or shorthand, or an endurance test is added only where the job needs it. Teacher posts in recent recruitments have used a single tier paper.
DSSSB exam pattern for teacher posts
| Post | Section A (general) | Section B (subject) | Total | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PRT (primary teacher) | 100 questions, 100 marks | 100 questions, 100 marks | 200 marks | 2 hours |
| TGT | 100 questions, 100 marks | 100 questions, 100 marks | 200 marks | 2 hours |
| PGT | 100 questions, 100 marks | 200 questions, 200 marks | 300 marks | 3 hours |
Section A has five parts of 20 questions each: general awareness, the reasoning section, arithmetical and numerical ability, Hindi language and comprehension, and English language and comprehension. For TGT and PGT, Section B tests the subject you will teach along with teaching methodology. For PRT, it covers child development, pedagogy and the primary school subjects. Read the post-wise pages for DSSSB TGT syllabus and DSSSB PRT syllabus for the details.
Pattern for clerical, MTS and other posts
For one tier general posts, a two hour paper carries 200 one-mark questions, and the five general sections get 40 marks apiece. There is no subject section at all.
In two tier general exams, Tier 1 follows this same 200 mark format and Tier 2 is a three hour session: four objective parts of 50 marks each, with a general awareness part that leans on Delhi: its past, people, land, economy and governance, plus an English essay and a letter or expansion of ideas. Technical two tier posts such as junior engineer use a subject paper in Tier 2. For the support staff post, open the DSSSB MTS syllabus; for assistant section officer, see the DSSSB ASO syllabus.
DSSSB syllabus for Section A, topic by topic
- General awareness: current events, Indian history, the constitution, maps and physical features, the Indian economy, everyday science, sports, culture, and facts about Delhi.
- General intelligence and reasoning: analogy, classification, series, coding, blood relations, directions, Venn diagrams, syllogism, non verbal figures and decision making.
- Arithmetical and numerical ability: number system, simplification, percentages, ratios, gain and loss, interest (simple, compound), work and time, speed problems, averages, mensuration and basic data interpretation.
- Hindi: व्याकरण, पर्यायवाची और विलोम, मुहावरे और लोकोक्तियाँ, वाक्य शुद्धि and unseen passages.
- English: grammar, vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, idioms, error detection, sentence correction, cloze and reading comprehension.
For teacher posts, Section A is only a third or half of the paper, yet it decides close contests. Twenty Hindi questions can be scored fast by anyone who revises grammar rules regularly.
Marking and minimum qualifying marks
A right answer adds one mark. A wrong MCQ answer pulls 0.25 off your score, while a skipped one changes nothing.
| Category | Minimum |
|---|---|
| General and EWS | 40 percent |
| OBC (Delhi) | 35 percent |
| SC, ST and PwBD | 30 percent |
Ex-servicemen get a further 5 percent relaxation within their category, subject to a floor of 30 percent. Clearing these minimums only makes you eligible; final selection follows merit against the vacancies. The Board can also set a separate cut off for any post.
Preparing for the paper you will actually face
Start by finding your post's exam type in the advertisement, then divide your time by marks.
- TGT or PGT: spend about two thirds of your hours on Section B. Graduation or post graduation textbooks for your subject and NCERT books of the senior school years build a strong base. Add teaching methods from your B.Ed. notes.
- PRT: revise child development and pedagogy with the same care as the subject parts, since the post demands both.
- General posts: give all five sections equal time, because each carries 40 marks.
Teacher posts usually also ask for a CTET pass as part of eligibility, so the CTET syllabus overlaps well with your pedagogy preparation.
