Subject wise test papers for postgraduate admission, set at graduation level

CUET PG syllabus and exam pattern explained

EntranceGraduate levelMCQ onlyUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The CUET PG syllabus is not one common list: the National Testing Agency publishes a separate syllabus for each test paper, such as English, economics, chemistry, commerce or the MBA and MCA papers, and each one follows what you studied in your undergraduate course. You pick the papers your target university and programme ask for, and you prepare that paper's syllabus.

That makes the first step simple but important: find out which paper code your chosen course needs. This page explains how the papers are built, the pattern and marking scheme NTA has used, what the English paper covers, and how to plan your months around a single subject paper.

How the CUET PG exam syllabus is organised

NTA offers a long list of test papers grouped by discipline: humanities and languages, sciences, commerce and management, and several interdisciplinary or professional papers. Each paper has a code, and each has its own syllabus document.

  • Subject papers test the core of a bachelor's programme, for example English literature, history, physics or economics.
  • Professional papers such as the MBA and MCA tests mix aptitude with subject basics. See the CUET PG MBA syllabus and the CUET PG MCA syllabus.
  • General or interdisciplinary papers are used by some universities for programmes open to graduates of any stream.

Universities state which paper they accept for each programme. Two universities can ask for different papers for courses with similar names, so check each prospectus.

NTA has changed the timing between cycles: older papers allowed 105 minutes, while the most recent bulletins set 90 minutes for 75 questions. The number of papers you may choose can also change, so take both from the information bulletin of your year rather than an older guide.

NTA announces the final answer key after inviting challenges to a provisional key. Your score is based on that final key.

The CUET PG English syllabus

The English paper is chosen by many students for MA English and related programmes. Its syllabus document has covered areas such as:

  • History of English literature across periods, from the medieval and Renaissance writers to the modern and contemporary age
  • Major genres and forms: poetry, drama, the novel, the short story and prose
  • Literary terms, figures of speech and prosody
  • Literary criticism and theory, from classical ideas to modern schools
  • Indian writing in English and literature in translation
  • Comprehension and language use based on unseen passages

Read the official English syllabus line by line, since the paper tests names, works and movements in detail. A wide reading list matters less than knowing who wrote what, when, and in which form.

Reading the CUET PG syllabus for your own paper

Once you know your paper code, open its syllabus PDF and turn it into a checklist. Most subject syllabi follow the structure of a three year degree course, divided into units. Compare the units with your college notes and mark three groups: units you studied well, units you studied briefly, and units your college skipped.

The third group is where most students lose marks, because the syllabus is common for candidates from many universities. Fill those gaps first with the standard textbooks used in central universities for that subject.

Aisha, a BA graduate from a state university, wants MA economics. Her college never taught econometrics in depth, but the economics paper syllabus lists it. She spent her first month only on that unit using an undergraduate econometrics text, then moved on to micro, macro and Indian economy, which she already knew.

A twelve week plan for one paper

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: cover the weak and missing units identified from the syllabus.
  2. Weeks 5 to 8: revise the full syllabus unit by unit, solving 30 to 40 MCQs at the end of each unit.
  3. Weeks 9 to 10: attempt full length timed tests of 75 questions, and track how many you answer and how many you get wrong.
  4. Weeks 11 to 12: revise facts that MCQs love: dates, names, definitions and formulas. Practise skipping doubtful questions, since a wrong answer costs a mark.

With minus one for every error, a careful attempt of 60 questions often scores better than a rushed attempt of all 75.

Books and official sources

Use the standard undergraduate textbooks of your subject, the ones prescribed in central university courses, as your main material. NCERT books of class 11 and 12 help as a quick base in subjects like economics, commerce or the sciences if you feel shaky on fundamentals. For pattern and sample questions, rely on NTA's own CUET PG website, where the syllabus, bulletin and past answer keys are posted.

If you have also taken the undergraduate test before, compare with the CUET UG syllabus to see how much deeper the PG papers go.
