Paper SCQP09: reasoning, maths and computer concepts in 75 questions

CUET PG MCA Syllabus and Paper Pattern

EntranceSCQP09Plus 4, minus 1Updated 26 Oct 2026

The CUET PG MCA syllabus is that of the computer science and IT paper, code SCQP09, which central universities such as Delhi University use for MCA admission; it tests thinking and decision making, mathematics up to the level of calculus and coordinate geometry, and computer concepts such as data structures, operating systems and digital logic. The whole thing is one online sitting: 75 objective items, 300 marks.

NTA conducts the test, but each university decides which paper code it accepts for its MCA seats. Most of the big ones map MCA to SCQP09, yet a few may ask for something else, so confirm the code in your target university's admission notice before you register. Below, the pattern comes first, then each unit in detail, then advice on what to revise in which order.

What the MCA test inside CUET PG looks like

There is no separate test called CUET MCA. You sit the CUET PG paper that your university links to its MCA programme, and for most central universities that is SCQP09. Delhi University's eligibility document, for example, lists SCQP09 against both its MCA and its M.Sc computer science seats, which is why aspirants for either course often prepare together.

After the test, NTA publishes a score card. Universities then run their own counselling or admission rounds using that score, and they set their own rules on graduation subjects. Delhi University, for instance, wants mathematics, computer science, statistics or operational research papers in your bachelor's degree.

CUET PG MCA syllabus: pattern of the paper and its marking

SCQP09 at a glance, from NTA's current bulletin
ItemWhat applies
Questions75, all compulsory
Maximum marks300
Duration90 minutes (earlier cycles allowed 105)
Right answer+4
Wrong answer−1
Not answered or marked for review only0
MediumEnglish and Hindi; the English version prevails in case of doubt

The bulletin is silent on how many items each unit gets. Past papers suggest that computer topics and mathematics take most of the paper and reasoning a smaller share, but the balance shifts between years, so leave no unit out.

The penalty math is worth doing once. Four wrong guesses wipe out the gain from one right answer, so guessing is sensible when a pair of options can be crossed out first.

Unit 1: thinking and decision making

Reasoning comes first in the official list and takes the least effort to get ready for. Expect:

  • Creative thinking and spotting relationships between unfamiliar ideas
  • Verbal reasoning and syllogisms, where you pick the conclusion that logically follows
  • Patterns and trends in figures, diagrams and geometric designs
  • Choosing the related letter, word, number or figure, and finding the odd one in a group
  • Completing a number series, or filling a gap in one, from its rule

Unit 2: mathematics

Mathematics here is at the level of a strong class 12 student with some first year college depth. The official list groups it this way:

  • Sets and counting: union and intersection, cardinality, elementary counting, permutations and combinations
  • Probability and statistics: basic probability, independent and dependent events, averages, frequency distributions, central tendency and spread
  • Algebra: expansion and factorisation, simultaneous linear and quadratic equations, indices and logarithms, AP, GP and HP, matrices and determinants
  • Coordinate geometry: distance between points, straight lines and where they meet, pairs of lines, and the conics (circle, ellipse, hyperbola, parabola)
  • Calculus: limits and continuity, derivatives with tangents, normals and simple maxima and minima, integrals solved by substitution, by parts or with partial fractions, and areas found from definite integrals

Some published versions of the syllabus also add vectors and trigonometry. The subject file NTA posts for your year is the final word.

Unit 3: computer concepts

This unit is where B.Sc computer science and BCA students gain an edge, and where others need the most time.

Operating systems

  • Role of an OS, with DOS, Unix and Windows as examples
  • Processes and threads, inter process communication, synchronisation
  • Scheduling of the CPU and of I/O, deadlock with the banker's algorithm
  • Memory: paging, segmentation, virtual memory; file systems

Data structures

  • Arrays and sparse matrices, stacks, linked lists, queues including priority queues
  • Trees: BST, AVL, B and B+ trees, threaded binary trees
  • Graphs, hashing, sorting and searching, recursion and ways of passing parameters

Digital fundamentals and computer arithmetic

  • Number systems, complements, fixed and floating point formats, error detecting codes
  • Boolean algebra, logic gates, Karnaugh maps
  • Combinational and sequential circuits, flip flops, registers, counters and memory organisation

Where to put your hours

If you come from a non computer background, Unit 3 needs about half your time. Start with digital logic and number systems, because they are self contained and quick to score, then move to data structures, and leave operating systems, which have the most theory, for last.

Mathematics graduates usually find Unit 2 comfortable but lose marks to careless arithmetic under the clock. Spend your maths time on timed sets rather than fresh theory. Reasoning needs only 20 minutes a day of practice for most people.

Aman finished a B.Sc in mathematics and has ten weeks. He gives weeks 1 to 4 to digital fundamentals and data structures, weeks 5 and 6 to operating systems, and runs maths and reasoning as a daily 40 minute warm up. The last four weeks are full 75 question mocks in 90 minutes, after each of which he notes every topic that cost him marks.

Study material that covers the paper

For mathematics, your class 11 and 12 NCERT books cover sets, algebra, coordinate geometry, probability and calculus well; add a standard undergraduate calculus text for integration practice. For Unit 3, use the textbooks prescribed in a typical BCA or B.Sc computer science course for operating systems, data structures and digital electronics. Past SCQP09 papers, available from NTA's question paper archive when released, reveal the depth NTA expects.

NTA posts the subject syllabus and information bulletin before each cycle. Download them from the official CUET PG site and match every unit against this page, because names and codes of papers can change.

MCA aspirants often take more than one entrance. The NIMCET syllabus is the route to NIT MCA seats and is heavier on mathematics, while the OJEE syllabus covers MCA admission in Odisha. For the general structure of all CUET PG papers, see the CUET PG syllabus, and if management is also on your list, the CUET PG MBA syllabus.

Frequently asked questions

Which CUET PG paper should I choose for MCA?

For most central universities, including Delhi University, the MCA paper is SCQP09, the computer science and IT paper. Universities map their own courses to paper codes, so check the admission notice of each university you are applying to.

Is there a penalty for errors in the MCA paper of CUET PG?

Yes. Each right response adds 4 and each incorrect one subtracts 1. Skipped items, including ones left only as marked for review, add nothing.

What does the CUET PG syllabus for MCA mean in number of questions?

You face 75 MCQs, every one compulsory, for 300 marks; the current bulletin gives you 90 minutes.

Can I take the MCA paper without maths in graduation?

NTA itself only conducts the test. Whether you need maths or computer papers in your degree depends on the university. Delhi University, for example, requires at least one or two papers in mathematical sciences, depending on whether your degree was annual or semester based.

Does CUET PG have an upper age bar?

The latest bulletin sets no age limit for the test. Individual universities may still apply their own age conditions for a programme.

Is the CUET PG MCA syllabus the same as M.Sc computer science?

At universities that use SCQP09 for both courses, yes, the test is the same. The eligibility rules and seat lists differ, so check both separately.
