The CUET commerce syllabus is really three domain papers, Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics, each drawn from the class 12 syllabus of that subject, and most commerce students add English and Mathematics or Applied Mathematics to complete their five. Every domain paper has 50 compulsory questions in 60 minutes, scoring 5 per right answer and minus 1 per wrong one.
People also search for the CUET syllabus for commerce as if it were one combined test, but you pick and sit each subject separately, and each university course decides which ones it wants. Below are the unit lists for the three commerce papers, notes on recent changes in Accountancy, a sensible subject combination and a timetable that runs alongside your boards.

How commerce subjects sit inside CUET UG
Your CUET UG form has room for at most five papers, mixing a language, domain papers and, if needed, the aptitude test. The three commerce domain papers are separate tests with their own codes, so a student can take Economics without Accountancy, or all three. The usual set for BCom and BCom honours is:
- English as the language
- Accountancy
- Business Studies
- Economics
- A fifth slot for Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or the aptitude test, as the course demands
Economics honours at several universities asks for Mathematics, so keep it unless you have checked your target colleges. The general rules for all subjects are on our CUET UG syllabus page.
CUET commerce syllabus for Accountancy
The revised Accountancy file follows the current class 12 course and is organised in five units.
Partnership firms
- Partnership deed, fixed and fluctuating capital, profit and loss appropriation
- Guarantee of profit to a partner and past adjustments
Reconstitution of a partnership
- A new ratio among partners: who gives up a share, who gains, revaluing assets and dividing reserves
- Goodwill: what drives it, and valuing it from average or super profits or by capitalising them
- Admission, retirement and death of a partner, executor's and loan accounts
Dissolution of a firm
- Realisation account and settlement of accounts (piecemeal distribution and insolvency of a partner are left out)
Company accounts
- Features and kinds of companies, share capital and its types
- Issue and allotment of shares, oversubscribed and undersubscribed issues, unpaid and early calls, forfeiture and reissue
- Issue of debentures, terms of redemption, debentures as collateral, interest on debentures
Financial statements and computerised accounting
- Drafting a simple company balance sheet and income statement under the prescribed heads
- Comparative and common size statements, liquidity, solvency, activity and profitability ratios, cash flow statement
- An optional unit on computerised accounting: chart of accounts, accounting information systems and spreadsheets
The syllabus file lists computerised accounting as an optional unit. Read the latest NTA bulletin to see how that choice works in the paper you sit.
Business Studies units
Business Studies follows the twelve chapters of the class 12 book, in two halves.
Part A: management
- What management is and why firms need it
- Principles from Fayol, and Taylor's ideas on work study
- Business environment
- Planning, organising and staffing
- Directing: motivation, leadership, communication and supervision
- Controlling
Part B: finance and marketing
- Finance decisions: capital structure, fixed and working capital, financial planning
- Financial markets: money and capital markets, stock exchanges, the role of SEBI
- Marketing: the marketing mix, branding, packaging, pricing, physical distribution, promotion
- Consumer protection: rights, responsibilities and redressal machinery
Case based items are common here, so practise reading a short business situation and naming the principle or function it shows.
Economics: micro, macro and Indian economy
The Economics or Business Economics paper covers three courses.
Introductory microeconomics
- Consumer behaviour, utility, demand and price elasticity of demand
- Production functions, returns to a factor, costs and revenue
- The firm under perfect competition, supply and its elasticity
- Market equilibrium, price ceilings and price floors
Introductory macroeconomics
- Circular flow and national income accounting
- Money, credit creation, the RBI and tools of monetary policy
- Aggregate demand, the multiplier, excess and deficient demand
- Government budget, receipts, expenditure and deficits
- Balance of payments and exchange rates
Indian economic development
- Planning and policy from independence to 1991
- Liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation
- Human capital, rural development, employment, environment and sustainable development
- Comparison with neighbouring economies
Where commerce students lose marks
No chapter wise question count comes from NTA, so judge by size and by how many concepts a chapter packs. In Accountancy, reconstitution of partnership and company accounts are the longest units. In Economics, national income numericals and the multiplier punish rushed calculation. Business Studies is mostly conceptual, but its options are often close in meaning, which tempts guesses that cost a mark each.
Tanvi, a commerce student in Indore, scored well in board style Accountancy answers but kept losing marks on ratio questions in timed sets. She noted every ratio formula with one worked figure beside it, then drilled 15 ratio and cash flow questions daily for ten days. Her Accountancy mock scores climbed by about 25 marks.
Plan from the board year to the test
- Till January: finish the class 12 textbooks for all three subjects; your board preparation is your CUET base.
- February: alternate days get a 50 item set under a 60 minute clock, rotating Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics.
- After boards: a full paper daily in your weakest subject, plus English reading practice and Mathematics or Applied Mathematics drills.
- Last ten days: only formula sheets, wrong answer logs and two mock rounds of all five tests.
Use the CUET UG previous papers page to judge pace, and see the CUET maths syllabus if you are taking Mathematics or Applied Mathematics as your fifth paper.
Books and official files
The class 12 NCERT books are the main source for all three subjects: the two Accountancy parts, the two Business Studies parts, and the macroeconomics and Indian economic development books, plus the class 11 microeconomics text for Economics. For the official syllabus file of each subject and the information bulletin, visit the NTA CUET portal. If you are in class 11 now, the class 11 commerce syllabus page shows what builds the base for these papers.
Frequently asked questions
Which subjects should a commerce student pick in CUET?
Most BCom aspirants combine English with the three commerce papers and then Mathematics or Applied Mathematics. Check each target course, since some ask for Mathematics and a few accept the General Aptitude Test instead.
Is microeconomics part of the CUET Economics paper?
Yes. The Economics syllabus file lists introductory microeconomics along with macroeconomics and Indian economic development, so class 11 micro chapters still matter.
How long is each commerce paper?
Sixty minutes, fifty questions, no internal choice. Five marks come with each right response, one goes with each slip, and the ceiling is 250.
Can a science student take Accountancy or Economics in CUET?
In recent cycles NTA let candidates pick a domain paper outside their school stream. Colleges, though, may set their own subject conditions for a course, so read its eligibility rules before choosing.
Is Entrepreneurship in the Business Studies paper?
No. The current Business Studies list follows the twelve class 12 chapters from management principles to consumer protection, without the older entrepreneurship unit.
