CBSE Class 11 Commerce Syllabus, Subject by Subject

School boardsSchool examNCERT basedUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The class 11 commerce syllabus in CBSE schools is built on three core electives, accountancy, business studies and economics, plus English and one more subject such as mathematics, applied mathematics or informatics practices. Each of the three commerce papers carries 80 theory marks and 20 project marks, and the year end exam is written, set and evaluated within your own school. The class 11th commerce syllabus, as many students type it, means exactly this course.

This guide gives the unit marks for every commerce subject as given in the latest CBSE curriculum we checked, the topics inside each unit, the NCERT books and a session plan. There is no board paper this year, yet class 12 accountancy and business studies grow directly from it, so the foundations you lay now carry straight into the board exam.

Subjects you study in class 11 commerce

CBSE does not fix a commerce stream as such. It lets you combine subjects, and most schools offer a standard commerce bundle:

  • Language: English Core, usually, or Hindi; covered in the English section of the CBSE class 11 syllabus guide
  • Accountancy
  • Business Studies
  • Economics, detailed separately on the class 11 economics syllabus page
  • Fifth subject: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Informatics Practices, Physical Education, Entrepreneurship or another option your school runs

Pick the fifth subject with your plans in mind. Mathematics (the standard course) keeps engineering style options and some economics honours courses open, while Applied Mathematics leans towards commerce applications such as interest, annuities and statistics.

Business studies units and marks

Economics in brief

Economics is split evenly between two NCERT books. Part A, Statistics for Economics, carries 40 marks across collection and presentation of data and statistical tools such as mean, median, mode, correlation and index numbers. Part B, Introductory Microeconomics, carries another 40 marks on how consumers choose and how demand behaves, how firms produce and supply, and price setting under perfect competition. The project is worth 20, with the viva counting for a large share.

The full unit and topic breakdown, along with project marking, is on the CBSE class 11 economics syllabus page.

11th commerce books for the new syllabus

Every commerce subject has NCERT textbooks, and CBSE's curriculum is written around them:

  • Accountancy: Financial Accounting Part 1 and Part 2
  • Business Studies: Business Studies (class 11)
  • Economics: one statistics book and one microeconomics book, both NCERT
  • English Core: Hornbill and Snapshots

Buy the current reprint, since NCERT has revised and rationalised several chapters in recent years and older copies may still carry dropped topics. Reference books and question banks can help with accountancy numericals, but the NCERT exercise questions should come first.

Marks and units here follow the most recent CBSE curriculum document we could check. A fresh curriculum is issued by CBSE every academic year, so download the current subject PDFs from cbseacademic.nic.in and match them with your school's annual plan.

Which topics deserve the most time

  • Accounting process (44 marks): more than half the accountancy theory paper. Journal entries, ledger posting, the bank reconciliation statement, depreciation and rectification of errors need daily practice, not reading.
  • Final accounts (24 marks): a single question with five or six adjustments can be worth 6 to 8 marks. Practise full problems until the balance sheet tallies without help.
  • Finance and trade (40 marks in BST): sources of finance and internal trade are fact heavy; make tables comparing shares and debentures, or wholesalers and retailers.
  • Statistics tools: numericals on central tendency and correlation are scoring and turn up every year.
Aarav in Indore found accountancy confusing in the first month because he tried to memorise journal entries. His teacher had him write the accounting equation next to every transaction for two weeks. Once he could see why each debit and credit happened, the ledger and trial balance chapters took half the time.
