Grade A post: 160 question paper with half the marks in computer science, then typing

UP police computer operator syllabus and exam pattern (Grade A)

Defence and police160 questionsTyping testUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The UP police computer operator syllabus for the Grade A post is built around one paper of 160 objective questions worth 200 marks, solved in 2 hours, and computer science alone fills 80 of those questions and 100 of the marks. GK brings 50 marks, and mental ability with reasoning brings another 50. Clear at least 40 percent and you move on to a speed test on the keyboard in both languages.

The latest recruitment round by UPPRPB offered 1,352 posts at a pay scale of Rs 25,500 to Rs 81,100. Because the computer part decides half the score, this paper rewards technical depth far more than the constable or sub inspector tests do.

Four steps from form to posting

Every Grade A candidate must clear all four of these, and missing any one ends the application.

  1. Written examination on OMR sheets, with every item given bilingually.
  2. Typing test for those who score 40 percent or more in the written paper.
  3. Document verification of age, education and the computer certificate.
  4. Medical examination.

Unlike the constable post, the computer operator recruitment has no running race in the selection list given in the latest advertisement. How the final merit is drawn up and the number shortlisted for typing appear only in the official advertisement; study those clauses early.

Each right answer earns 1.25. The reports we checked do not confirm whether wrong answers are penalised, so look for a negative marking clause in your admit card instructions and the board's notice.

The board can revise the pattern between recruitments. Treat this table as the latest reported scheme and match it against the official PDF on uppbpb.gov.in.

Computer science in the UP police computer operator syllabus

Here lies the real weight of the paper. The listed areas run well beyond office basics, close to a first year diploma in computing.

  • Fundamentals: generations and history of computers, architecture, input and output devices, memory types, hardware and software.
  • Number systems and logic: binary, octal and hexadecimal conversion, Boolean algebra and logic gates.
  • Programming ideas: algorithms and flowcharts, basic data structures such as arrays, stacks and queues.
  • Databases: DBMS concepts, with FoxPro and Oracle SQL named in the syllabus.
  • Office tools: word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, shortcuts and formatting.
  • Networks and the internet: LAN and WAN, topologies, protocols, email and browsers.
  • Web basics: HTML and JavaScript at an introductory level.
  • Security and new technology: viruses, cyber safety and emerging areas.

If your O level notes are still with you, they map closely onto this list.

General knowledge: 40 questions, 50 marks

  • General science and the environment
  • History of India, the Indian Constitution and the economy
  • Indian and world geography, farming and natural resources
  • Uttar Pradesh: education, culture, administration, land revenue and police set up
  • Internal and border security, terrorism, national and international organisations
  • Cyber crime, social media, GST and money matters such as demonetisation
  • Awards, books, authors and current events

The Uttar Pradesh list is the part candidates skip most often. A few hours on the state's districts, schemes and police structure usually yields easy marks.

Mental ability and reasoning topics

The two papers are combined into one section worth 50 marks, yet the syllabus lists them separately.

Reasoning

  • Analogies, classification, similarities and differences
  • Space visualisation, visual memory and observation
  • Arithmetical reasoning and number series

Mental ability

  • Logical diagrams and symbol interpretation
  • Perception and word formation
  • Letter and number series, direction sense
  • Understanding implied meaning in statements

The typing test explained

The typing round is pass or fail. Reported minimum speeds are 25 words a minute in Hindi and 30 words a minute in English, with at least 85 percent accuracy. Hindi is commonly tested on the Unicode Inscript layout, so if you learnt on the older Remington layout, switch early.

Rahul types English at 40 words a minute but has never used Inscript. He sets his laptop keyboard to Hindi Inscript six weeks before the test and practises 20 minutes every night. By the third week he crosses 25 words a minute, and from then on he only works on accuracy.

Start typing practice while you prepare for the written paper, not after the result. The gap between the two rounds can be short.

Eligibility at a glance

  • Education: class 12 with physics and mathematics, together with the O level certificate in computers from NIELIT (formerly DOEACC) or an equivalent; or else a diploma in computer engineering, information technology or electronics engineering.
  • Age: 18 to 28 years, counted on a date fixed in the advertisement, with reserved categories allowed extra years by UP government rules.
  • Registration: the board now requires its one time registration before the application form opens.

For the other UP police papers, compare our UP police constable syllabus and UP SI syllabus pages, or browse every force through our defence and police section.

Ten weeks, split the way the marks are

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: computer science daily for three hours. Finish fundamentals, number systems, office tools and networks first, then DBMS, data structures and web basics.
  2. Weeks 5 to 6: reasoning and mental ability, one topic a day with 30 timed questions.
  3. Weeks 7 to 8: general knowledge with a focus on Uttar Pradesh and current events.
  4. Weeks 9 to 10: three complete mock papers each week, timed at two hours.

Keep 20 minutes of typing every day across all ten weeks. A candidate scoring well in computers but failing the speed test gains nothing.
