The CBSE geography class 12 syllabus is built on two NCERT textbooks, Fundamentals of Human Geography and India: People and Economy, which carry 35 marks each in a 70 mark theory paper, with 5 of those marks in each book reserved for map work. A practical exam of 30 marks, based on the book Practical Work in Geography Part II, completes the 100.
The course moves from people and economic activity across the world to the same questions inside India: population, settlements, farming, water, minerals, transport and trade. Below are the unit marks for the current session, chapter details, the full map list and practical topics, plus ways to revise that match how marks are spread.

Geography class 12 syllabus at a glance
| Part | Book | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| A | Fundamentals of Human Geography (including world map work, 5) | 35 |
| B | India: People and Economy (including India map work, 5) | 35 |
| C | Practical Work in Geography Part II | 30 |
| Total | 100 | |
CBSE's design for the theory paper asks for about 41 percent of marks from remembering and understanding, 37 percent from application, and 22 percent from analysis, evaluation and creation. In plain terms, more than half the paper wants you to use what you know, not just recall it.
Book 1: Fundamentals of Human Geography
| Unit | Chapters | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| I | 1. Human Geography | 3 |
| II | 2. The World Population: Distribution, Density and Growth; 3. Human Development | 8 |
| III | 4. Primary Activities; 5. Secondary Activities; 6. Tertiary and Quaternary Activities; 7. Transport, Communication and Trade; 8. International Trade | 19 |
| World political map work | 5 |
Unit III alone is worth 19 marks, more than half of this book. The chapters on primary activities and transport are also where most world map items come from, so studying them with an atlas open saves time twice.
Book 2: India: People and Economy
| Unit | Chapters | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| I | 1. Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Composition | 5 |
| II | 2. Human Settlements | 3 |
| III | 3. Land Resources and Agriculture; 4. Water Resources; 5. Mineral and Energy Resources; 6. Planning and Sustainable Development in Indian Context | 10 |
| IV | 7. Transport and Communication; 8. International Trade | 7 |
| V | 9. Geographical Perspective on Selected Issues and Problems | 5 |
| India political map work | 5 |
Unit III, on resources and development, is the heaviest block here. Questions often ask you to explain a pattern, such as why rice dominates in one region and wheat in another, so learn causes alongside facts.
Map items you must be able to locate
Map questions reward steady practice on blank outline sheets more than any other part of the paper.
- World map (Book 1): regions of subsistence gathering, nomadic herding, commercial livestock rearing, extensive commercial grain farming and mixed farming; the terminal stations of the Trans Siberian, Trans Canadian and Trans Australian railways; major sea ports and airports of each continent; and inland waterways such as the Suez Canal, Panama Canal, Rhine waterway and St. Lawrence Seaway.
- India map (Book 2): states with the highest and lowest population density as per the last census; leading states for rice, wheat, cotton, jute, sugarcane, tea and coffee; mines of iron ore, manganese, copper, bauxite and coal; oil refineries; and the listed Indian sea ports and international air hubs.
Practical work and how it is marked
The practical book has four chapters, assessed out of 30.
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Data: its source and compilation; data processing; graphical representation of data | 18 |
| Spatial information technology | 7 |
| Practical record book and viva voce | 5 |
In the external guidelines this becomes a 25 mark written practical test, 2 marks for the file and 3 for viva. Expect to compute mean, median and mode, draw line, bar and pie diagrams, and explain dot, choropleth and isopleth maps. The GIS chapter covers its components, data formats, spatial and attribute data, and overlay and buffer analysis.
Turning the marks into a revision plan
- Weeks with the most return: Book 1 Unit III (19 marks) and Book 2 Unit III (10 marks). Start revision here.
- Daily map drill: ten minutes a day on one outline map, alternating world and India, until you can mark every listed item without looking.
- Answer framing: for 3 and 5 mark answers, open with a one line definition, give points with a regional example, and add a small sketch or flow where useful.
- Practical file early: finish your diagrams and GIS notes before the pre boards, so the last month stays free for theory.
Books and where this fits
The two NCERT textbooks and the NCERT practical book cover every topic the board draws questions from. An updated atlas helps with map work. Question styles from earlier boards are broken down in the CBSE class 12 previous papers guide.
