An English previous year question paper class 12 students solve at home is the best rehearsal for the board exam, because it shows exactly how CBSE frames the 80-mark English Core paper: reading passages first, then writing tasks, then literature from Flamingo and Vistas. The same is true for Hindi Core and every other subject, where past papers reveal which units the board leans on.
This page recaps the English paper design, explains what past board papers show, sets out a practice routine and points you to the official place to get papers. For the chapter list, see our CBSE class 12 syllabus page.

The English Core paper design, briefly
| Section | Content | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| A: Reading | A pair of unseen passages, answered through MCQs and brief written responses | 22 |
| B: Creative writing | Short formal pieces: a notice or an invitation, a letter, and an article or a report | 18 |
| C: Literature | Extract-based and short and long answers from Flamingo and Vistas | 40 |
The paper carries 80 marks for 3 hours. Internal assessment adds 20 marks, which you earn in school, not in the board exam. Papers before the NCERT book rationalisation include a few chapters no longer in the syllabus; skip those questions.
What an English previous year question paper class 12 shows
- Reading passages reward close reading. The case-based factual passage often includes a small table or data, and questions ask you to infer, not copy.
- Writing tasks follow a steady menu. A notice or invitation, a formal letter, and an article or report appear with internal choice.
- Literature leans on extracts. Poetry and prose extracts with objective questions are common, and long answers often ask about a character's values or a theme.
- Vistas questions test understanding of the whole story, so reading summaries alone rarely works.
Class 12 Hindi previous year question paper
The Hindi Core paper follows a similar order: unseen reading, then creative and functional writing (articles, letters, feature or report writing from the writing and media book), then textbook questions from Aroh and Vitan. Past Hindi papers show a steady mix of poetry and prose extracts and short answers on the themes of each chapter.
When you practise a class 12 Hindi previous year question paper, time the writing section separately. Students often spend too long on the letter and rush the textbook part, where marks are easier to collect.
A practice routine from January onwards
- Two weeks before pre-boards: solve two papers section by section, without a clock, and check against the marking scheme.
- After pre-boards: one full paper every three days in 3 hours, after 15 minutes of reading time, just as in the board exam hall.
- Self-mark strictly: use the official marking scheme value points. If your answer misses a point, you lose that mark in the board exam too.
- Rewrite weak answers: take your two worst literature answers from each paper and rewrite them within the word limit.
- Last week: only revision of formats, extracts and your error list.
Try these English Core practice items
We wrote the tasks below ourselves; they mirror the kinds of items that turn up in English Core.
- Notice (writing): You are Meera, head girl of a senior secondary school. Write a notice in about 50 words informing students about a book donation drive in your school.
- Letter (writing): Write a letter to the editor of a local newspaper about the lack of streetlights on the road leading to your school, in about 120 words.
- Prose (literature): How does the ending of The Rattrap show that kindness can change a person? Answer in about 40 words.
- Poetry (literature): What contrast does the poet draw between the speaker's feelings and her actions in My Mother at Sixty-six? Answer in about 40 words.
- Supplementary reader: Discuss how Derry's view of himself changes after meeting Mr Lamb in On the Face of It. Answer in about 120 words.
Where to get papers officially
CBSE uploads question papers of its main board exams on its official website, usually under the examination or question paper section, subject by subject and set by set. For the current session, sample question papers with their marking schemes can be found on the CBSE academic website. Between the two you have everything you need, free of cost.
Avoid papers from unknown sources that claim to be leaked or predicted; they are not genuine and only waste time.
Other subjects and classes
This routine suits each CBSE class 12th previous year question paper, from accountancy to physics. Our class 12 chemistry previous papers page explains the science paper in more detail. If you are guiding a younger sibling, the CBSE class 10 previous papers page covers the board exam two years earlier.
Frequently asked questions
Previous year question paper of class 12: how many should I solve?
For English, five or six full papers plus the official sample paper is enough if you review each one with the marking scheme. For maths and science subjects, aim for more.
Do older CBSE class 12 papers still help?
They do for practice, but skip questions from chapters that have since been removed. Match every question to the current syllabus first.
Where do I get the class 12th English previous year question paper with solutions?
Question papers sit on the main CBSE site, and marking schemes for sample papers on the academic site. The marking scheme gives value points, which work as model answers.
Why do my friends have a different paper from mine?
CBSE sets several versions of each paper for different regions and sets. The design is the same; only the questions change.
Is the Hindi paper also available officially?
Yes. Hindi Core and Hindi Elective papers are published along with other subjects on the CBSE website.
Should I write full answers when practising?
Yes, at least for half the papers. Writing by hand in time is what the board exam tests.
