APPSC Group 2 Syllabus and Exam Pattern for Prelims and Mains

Civil servicesGraduate levelObjective papersUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The APPSC group 2 syllabus under the revised scheme has a 150 mark screening test in five equal parts (history, geography, Indian society, current affairs and mental ability), then a mains with a pair of 150 mark papers: Andhra Pradesh history with the Indian Constitution in Paper I, and the Indian and Andhra Pradesh economy with science and technology in Paper II. The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission fills executive and non executive posts such as deputy tahsildar, sub registrar, municipal commissioner and assistant section officer through this exam.

No interview round exists, so your rank rests on the mains alone. That makes the 300 mark mains the stage that decides your rank. Read on for the scheme of every round, the topics in each section, the computer proficiency test and a plan that follows the weightage.

All written papers are objective, and since each question is worth 1 mark, every slip takes away 0.33. The screening test is only a filter: its result never enters your rank calculation. Candidates are called to the mains in a ratio to vacancies fixed by the commission.

APPSC has revised the group 2 scheme more than once. Check the scheme and syllabus annexure in the latest notification on psc.ap.gov.in ahead of your first revision cycle.

Who can apply

Graduation in any discipline, or an equivalent qualification, is the basic requirement; a few posts list extra conditions. The most recent advertisement set the limits at 18 and 42. Relaxations included 5 years for SC, ST and BC candidates and state government employees, 10 years for persons with disabilities, and 3 years for ex servicemen. The upper limit in Andhra Pradesh depends on government orders that are extended from time to time, so confirm it each cycle.

The computer proficiency test

Candidates selected for posts that need office skills sit a 60 minute practical test of 100 marks after the mains. It covers computer basics, operating systems, the internet and email, and office tools for documents, spreadsheets and presentations. It is qualifying only: the minimum is 40 marks for OC, 35 for BC and 30 for SC, ST and PH candidates. Practise typing a short note, building a table with a chart and making two slides within the time.

Where to spend your hours

Each mains section carries the same 75 marks, so a weak section pulls your rank down directly. Most aspirants find the Andhra Pradesh history and the state economy hardest, because they are less familiar than national topics. Give those two the most time.

  1. Months 1 and 2: polity and Indian economy from NCERT class 11 and 12 books and a standard polity text.
  2. Month 3: AP history, dynasty by dynasty, with a timeline of the state formation movement.
  3. Month 4: AP socio economic survey and budget, and science and technology notes.
  4. Month 5: screening practice for history, geography, society and reasoning, with mock tests on the same timing.
  5. Month 6 onward: mains mocks of 150 questions in 150 minutes, alternating Paper I and Paper II.
Lakshmi from Guntur cleared the screening test easily but had read AP history only from short notes. In the weeks before the mains she switched to the state board intermediate history books and made one page per dynasty. Her mock scores in Section A rose by about 15 marks.

Frequently asked questions

Does APPSC group 2 have an interview round?

No. Selection is based on the mains written marks, followed by the computer proficiency test where it applies and document verification.

Are screening marks added to my final score?

No. The screening round is a filter for the mains and nothing more. Your rank depends on the 300 marks of the two mains papers.

How much is the negative marking?

Each incorrect answer costs 0.33 of a mark, in the screening paper and in both mains papers alike. Skipped questions lose nothing.

What is in the APPSC group 2 mains syllabus?

Paper I covers the social and cultural history of Andhra Pradesh and the Indian Constitution. Paper II covers the Indian and Andhra Pradesh economy and science and technology, each section worth 75 marks.

What age limit applies to group 2?

The last notification allowed 18 to 42 years for general candidates, plus age concessions for BC, SC, ST, disabled and some other groups. The upper limit depends on state orders, so check the current notice.

Is the computer test compulsory for everyone?

Only candidates for posts that require office skills take it, and it is qualifying in nature. Check which posts list the CPT in the notification.
