The AP TET syllabus is built around five blocks of 30 questions each: child development and pedagogy, a first language, English, and then, depending on the level, maths with EVS for Paper 1 or a single 60 question block in your teaching subject for Paper 2. Every paper has 150 objective questions worth 1 mark each, a time limit of 2 hours 30 minutes and no negative marking.
The Andhra Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test is held by the state's school education department as the gateway for teaching classes 1 to 8 in state schools. It comes in four versions: 1A and 2A for regular schools, and 1B and 2B for special schools that teach children with disabilities. This guide breaks down each paper, explains the content and pedagogy split inside every subject, and lists the qualifying marks.

Which AP TET paper should you write
- Paper 1A: primary teachers (classes 1 to 5) in regular schools, typically Secondary Grade Teacher posts.
- Paper 1B: primary teachers in special schools.
- Paper 2A: upper primary teachers (classes 6 to 8) in regular schools, typically School Assistant posts, choosing among a maths and science block, a social studies block or a language block.
- Paper 2B: upper primary teachers in special schools, with a disability specialisation block.
Holding both a primary teacher diploma and a B.Ed usually lets you register for both levels. The TET only certifies eligibility; actual posts are filled later through the state's teacher recruitment test, known as the DSC. Our wider TET syllabus guide explains how state tests compare.
AP TET exam pattern for Paper 1A
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Child Development and Pedagogy | 30 | 30 |
| II | Language I (chosen language) | 30 | 30 |
| III | Language II (English, compulsory) | 30 | 30 |
| IV | Mathematics (24 content, 6 pedagogy) | 30 | 30 |
| V | Environmental Studies (24 content, 6 pedagogy) | 30 | 30 |
| Total (2 hours 30 minutes) | 150 | 150 | |
Paper 1B follows the same shape, but Part I focuses on child development and pedagogy as it applies to special education. Content questions in Paper 1 are drawn from school topics of classes 3 to 8, with difficulty that can reach class 10.
Paper 2A and 2B structure
| Part | Subject | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| I | Child Development and Pedagogy | 30 |
| II | Language I | 30 |
| III | Language II (English) | 30 |
| IV | Chosen option: maths with science, social studies, or language | 60 |
Within Part IV, the maths and science option splits into 20 questions each for mathematics, physical science and biological science, each with 16 content and 4 pedagogy questions. Social studies and the language option each have 48 content and 12 pedagogy questions. In Paper 2B, Part IV is replaced by 60 questions on the chosen category of disability and its pedagogy.
Paper 2 content comes from classes 6 to 10, and difficulty can stretch to intermediate (class 12) level.
Child development topics in the AP TET syllabus
- Development: growth and maturation, stages of development, heredity and environment, physical, cognitive, emotional and moral development.
- Learning: how children learn, theories of learning, motivation, memory and forgetting, transfer of learning.
- Individual differences: intelligence, personality, learners with special needs, inclusive education.
- Pedagogy: child centred teaching, classroom management, continuous and comprehensive evaluation, the role of the teacher and school.
This part is common to every paper, so it gives the best return on time. Many items paint a small classroom scene and then ask for the best teacher response, so link every theory to a short real example.
Languages, maths and EVS: what each part asks
Language I and English
A passage or poem for comprehension, grammar and vocabulary at school level, and language teaching methods covering listening, speech, reading and writing, remedial teaching and assessment. Language I options in the latest notice included Telugu, Urdu, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Odia, with Sanskrit available for Paper 2. English is fixed as Language II.
Mathematics
Numbers and operations, fractions and decimals, measurement, geometry and shapes, mensuration, data handling and simple algebra, plus how to teach these ideas with concrete materials.
Environmental Studies
Family and friends, food, water and shelter, the plant and animal world, the human body with health and hygiene, transport and communication, natural resources and the local environment, along with the activity based methods used to teach EVS.
Qualifying marks and how to read your score
| Category | Percent | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| OC and EWS | 60 | 90 |
| BC | 50 | 75 |
| Ex servicemen, SC, ST and PwBD | 40 | 60 |
Passing earns you the eligibility certificate. Your TET marks also carry weight in the later DSC merit list, so every extra mark beyond the minimum helps when posts are filled.
AP TET exam pattern and a 10 week plan
With no negative marking, the AP TET exam pattern rewards breadth: you should attempt all 150 questions. Plan around the sections that are common to all papers first.
- Weeks 1 to 3: the CDP part, one theme a day, with 20 practice questions.
- Weeks 4 to 6: content from state textbooks in your subject block. For Paper 1, maths and EVS; for Paper 2, your chosen option.
- Weeks 7 and 8: the teaching method items hidden in each subject, which many candidates neglect even though they make up a fifth of every content section.
- Weeks 9 and 10: full papers in 150 minutes on a computer screen, followed by revision of mistakes.
Books and links to other teaching tests
The Andhra Pradesh state textbooks for classes 1 to 10 are your main content source, because questions follow them closely. For child development, the psychology book from your diploma or degree in education will do; add the official AP TET syllabus PDF from the portal to tick off every unit.
Many AP candidates also write the central test. Our guides to the CTET paper 1 syllabus (primary) and the CTET paper 2 syllabus (upper primary) show the overlap, practise with the guidance on our TET previous papers page, and browse the full teaching exams section.
Frequently asked questions
How long is each AP TET paper and how many questions does it carry?
Every version of the test sets 150 objective items, each carrying one mark, for a top score of 150. You have 150 minutes on the clock.
Does AP TET use negative marking?
No. An incorrect option just earns nothing, so skipping a question on screen only throws away a possible mark.
What is the difference between Paper 1A and 1B?
Both are for classes 1 to 5. Paper 1A is for regular schools, while Paper 1B is for special schools, and its pedagogy part focuses on teaching children with disabilities.
What are the AP TET pass marks?
OC and EWS candidates need 60 percent, BC candidates 50 percent, and 40 percent for SC, ST, PwBD candidates and former defence personnel, according to the latest notification.
What should I read to cover AP TET content?
Start with the Andhra Pradesh state school textbooks for the content parts and a teacher training psychology book for child development. The official syllabus from the AP TET portal shows which units to cover.
Is English compulsory in AP TET?
Yes. English is the compulsory Language II in every paper, and it carries 30 questions. Language I is chosen from the options listed in the notification.
