The APPSC group 1 syllabus has three stages: an objective screening round with Paper I on General Studies and Paper II on General Aptitude, 120 marks apiece, a written mains of seven 150 mark papers, and finally a personality test worth 75. In the mains, Telugu and English are qualifying papers, and the five remaining papers decide your rank along with the interview, out of 825.
Group 1 recruits officers such as Deputy Collector, DSP (Civil), Assistant Commissioner of State Tax, District Educational Officer and Divisional Development Officer, so the content weighs Andhra Pradesh history, economy and governance heavily. How the three stages connect
The preliminary examination is only a screening test. Its marks shortlist candidates for the mains, usually in a fixed ratio to the vacancies in each category, yet APPSC sets them aside when ranking.
The main examination is written in answer booklets. You must pass Telugu and English at the minimum level, and then your marks in the essay and four general studies papers form the core of your score.
The interview adds 75 marks. Earlier, the state had dropped interviews for some cycles, but the latest Group 1 notifications include it again, so prepare for it as part of the plan.

Where to put most of your effort
Andhra Pradesh content runs through almost every paper: state history in Paper II, its economy and schemes in Paper IV, and current events in prelims. Make a separate AP notebook from day one.
- Prelims aptitude is half of Paper II and rewards daily practice of 20 to 25 questions.
- Do not neglect the qualifying Telugu and English papers; failing either means your other papers are not counted.
- Practise ethics case studies in Paper III, where many candidates write vague answers.
Books and reading list in general terms
NCERT textbooks from middle school to Class 12 give the base for most Group 1 subjects. Add Telugu Akademi books on AP history, culture and economy, the state's socio economic survey and budget documents, and the Union budget speech summary.
For current events, read one national and one Telugu daily, and keep the APPSC syllabus printout on your desk to check every topic off as you finish it.
Eligibility and age in brief
A degree from any recognised university is the basic requirement. Most Group 1 posts take candidates aged 18 to 42, though some posts differ: DSP (Civil) needs 21 to 30 and comes with physical standards. SC, ST and BC applicants may be five years older than the general limit, and PH applicants ten years. A recent state order has temporarily raised the upper limit for non uniformed posts, so read the detailed notification for the limit that applies to you.
