The class 12 UP board syllabus is set by UPMSP for intermediate students, and it pairs NCERT based units in physics, chemistry, biology, maths and most humanities subjects with the board's own Hindi course and an English paper built on the NCERT books Flamingo and Vistas. Each subject is a 100 mark course, either all on the written paper or split between theory and a practical.
Further down sits a unit by unit marks breakdown for the core subjects, the full section plan of the Hindi and English papers, the list of prose, poetry and stories you need to read, and a calendar style plan that keeps the last weeks free for revision. Always match these lists with the PDF for your own session, since the board revises them from time to time.

How the class 12 UP board syllabus is organised
In class 12 you continue the stream you picked in class 11: a science group (maths or biology), commerce, or arts. Hindi (general Hindi or literary Hindi, depending on your combination) and English are common choices across streams. Lab based subjects like geography and the three sciences have been split into a written paper and a practical exam held at school before the theory papers. Where there is no lab work, all 100 marks sit on the theory paper.
The written paper itself has an objective part answered on an OMR sheet and a descriptive part in the answer book. The share of objective questions differs from subject to subject, so look at the board's model paper for each one rather than assuming a fixed count.
Unit marks for science and maths
The theory unit marks below come from the board's subject syllabus for the recent session. In physics, chemistry and biology they add up to 70, with the remaining 30 for the practical.
| Unit | Marks |
|---|---|
| Optics, the biggest unit (ray and wave) | 13 |
| Static electricity: charges, fields, potential, capacitors | 8 |
| Magnetism and the magnetic effect of current | 8 |
| Induction (electromagnetic) with AC circuits | 8 |
| Nuclei and atoms | 8 |
| Semiconductor and electronic devices | 8 |
| Current electricity | 7 |
| Radiation and matter: dual nature | 6 |
| EM waves | 4 |
Chemistry (70): physical chemistry has solutions (8), electrochemistry (7) and the rates of reactions, that is kinetics (7). Inorganic has the d block and f block chapter (6) and coordination chemistry (7). Organic, the largest share, runs from haloalkanes with haloarenes (7) through alcohol, phenol and ether chemistry (7), carbonyl compounds and carboxylic acids (8), then amines (6), and ends with biomolecules (7).
Biology (70): inheritance, molecular genetics and evolution together carry 18, the highest. Reproduction, human welfare (health, disease, microbes) and ecology each carry 14, and biotechnology with its uses carries 10.
Mathematics (100): calculus 44, vectors with 3D geometry 18, matrices and determinants under algebra 15, relations and functions 10, probability 8 and linear programming problems 5. Calculus alone is close to half the paper, so continuity, derivatives, integrals and differential equations deserve the most hours.
A deeper chapter list for physics, matched to the NCERT book, is on the class 12 physics syllabus page; the units are the same NCERT chapters, though the board groups them differently.
Class 12 Hindi syllabus, UP board
Hindi is a 100 mark written paper in two sections. Section A (khand ka) tests literature: the history of Hindi prose and poetry, prescribed passages, a story and a khandkavya. Section B (khand kha) covers Sanskrit, poetic devices, essay, letter writing and grammar.
| Area | Marks |
|---|---|
| History of Hindi prose literature | 5 |
| Prose passages and lessons | 15 |
| Story (kahani) | 5 |
| History of Hindi poetry | 5 |
| Poetry passages and poems | 15 |
| Khandkavya | 5 |
| Kavya saundarya: ras, alankar, chhand | 6 |
| Sanskrit: translation with context and short answers in Sanskrit | 18 |
| Essay | 9 |
| Letter writing | 8 |
| Grammar | 9 |
| Total | 100 |
What you read
- Prose lessons: Rashtra ka Swaroop, Ashok ke Phool, Bhasha aur Adhunikta, Bhagya aur Purusharth, Nindaras and others listed for the session.
- Poets: Bharatendu Harishchandra, Jagannath Das Ratnakar, Hariaudh, Maithilisharan Gupt, Jaishankar Prasad, Nirala, Pant, Mahadevi Verma, Dinkar, Agyeya and Dharmveer Bharati, with poems such as Badal Raag and Hiroshima.

- Khandkavya: one of Mukti Yagya, Satya ki Jeet, Rashmirathi, Aalokvritt, Tyagpathi or Shravan Kumar. Which one you study depends on your district, so ask your school.
- Sanskrit: about eleven lessons, including Bhojasyaudaryam, Nripati Dilipah, Subhashit Ratnani and Dootvakyam.
The Sanskrit block is the single largest chunk at 18 marks. Students who skip it to save time often lose the gap between a first division and a second.
Class 12th English syllabus, UP board
The English paper is set for 100 marks in four sections, as given in the board's own syllabus PDF.
| Section | What is asked | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| A: Reading | One long unseen passage: four short answers (12) and three vocabulary items (3) | 15 |
| B: Writing | An article of 100 to 150 words (10) and a letter: to the editor, a complaint or a business letter (10) | 20 |
| C: Grammar | Ten questions of 2 marks on narration, synthesis, transformation, syntax, idioms and phrasal verbs, antonyms, synonyms, homophones and one word substitutes (20), plus Hindi to English translation of 7 to 8 sentences (5) | 25 |
| D: Literature | Prose and poetry from Flamingo, stories from Vistas | 40 |
Prose in Flamingo: Daudet's The Last Lesson, Anees Jung's Lost Spring, Douglas on Deep Water, Lagerlof's The Rattrap, Fischer's Indigo, Ashokamitran's Poets and Pancakes, Silvester's The Interview in two parts, and Barton's Going Places. Poems in Flamingo: Kamala Das on her mother at sixty six, Neruda's Keeping Quiet, Keats with A Thing of Beauty, Frost's A Roadside Stand, and Adrienne Rich's Aunt Jennifer's Tigers, with figures of speech such as simile, metaphor, personification, oxymoron, apostrophe, hyperbole and onomatopoeia. Stories in Vistas: Finney's The Third Level, Kalki's The Tiger King, Tishani Doshi's journey to Antarctica, Pearl S. Buck's The Enemy, Susan Hill's On the Face of It, and the two part Memories of Childhood.
No grammar book is prescribed, so your teacher's choice is fine. Grammar and translation together are a quarter of the paper and reward steady weekly practice more than late reading.
UP board syllabus class 12 for commerce and humanities
Accountancy, business studies and economics broadly follow the NCERT class 12 books, as do history, geography, political science and sociology. Subjects that have no NCERT parallel in the same form, such as Sanskrit as an elective or some vocational papers, use books the board itself prescribes. Geography and other practical based humanities subjects keep a share of marks for practical work, while the rest are fully written.
Each subject has its own PDF in the syllabus section of the board's site. Download the ones for your exact combination, print the unit lists and stick them inside your notebook covers so you can tick chapters off through the year.
A year plan for intermediate students
- April to August: finish the first half of each science and maths book, alongside the Hindi prose and poetry lessons. Learn author introductions as you go.
- September to November: complete the remaining units, the khandkavya and the Vistas stories. Start writing one essay and one letter each week.
- December: practical files, viva practice and a first full revision of calculus and organic chemistry, the two heaviest blocks.
- January to the exam: full length model papers against the clock, OMR section included, and a second revision of short notes.

Where UP board and CBSE differ
Science and maths content overlaps heavily with the CBSE class 12 syllabus, since both rely on NCERT. The real differences are in the language papers, the Sanskrit block inside Hindi, the OMR objective section and the way unit marks are grouped. If you plan to sit an entrance test after class 12, your NCERT base carries over whichever board you study in. For classes 9 to 11 and the overall marking rules, read the main UP board syllabus page, and for other state boards see school boards.
