AKTU previous year paper guide for end semester exams

EntranceB.Tech and moreUnit wise drillsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

An AKTU previous year paper is the closest thing you have to a map of your end semester exam, because the university sets one common paper for every affiliated college and keeps the same five unit structure year after year. Study three or four old papers of a subject and you can see which units supply the long questions, which definitions keep returning and how much writing a ten mark answer needs.

This guide covers how the theory paper is put together, what repeated patterns to look for, a practice routine for the weeks before exams, five homemade practice items, and the university's own archive of real papers.

How an AKTU theory paper is put together

Before you treat any old paper as a model, match it to your own scheme. Under the current evaluation scheme a theory course is worth 70 marks in the university paper plus 30 internal marks given by your college, as our AKTU syllabus page explains. The written paper usually runs for three hours and is split into three sections:

  • Section A: compulsory short questions drawn from all five units, often definitions, formulas, one line reasons or small numericals.
  • Section B: longer questions where you choose a few out of a larger set.
  • Section C: one question per unit, each with two parts, where you answer either part.

How many questions you get and what each is worth is printed at the top of each section, and older papers set under the 100 mark scheme used a different split. Always read the cover lines of the paper you practise from so that you divide your time correctly.

AKTU revises schemes for new batches. Check the evaluation scheme for your admission year and the lines printed on your AKTU admit card before relying on any paper format.

Patterns that repeat in old AKTU papers

Put three years of the same subject code next to each other and clear habits of the paper setters show up. In maths papers, eigenvalue problems, Jacobians, multiple integrals and the Gauss divergence or Stokes theorem appear in nearly every set. Physics and chemistry papers return to the same derivations, while programming papers keep asking you to trace output, write a short function or explain storage classes and pointers.

Section A rewards students who know crisp definitions from every unit, so a skipped unit costs marks even there. Section C is predictable at the unit level: because each unit gets one question with internal choice, you can plan to master one strong topic per unit rather than every topic. Note which questions came back word for word or with only changed numbers, and mark them as must do.

Practise with an AKTU previous year paper, unit by unit

  1. Six weeks out: collect the last four or five papers of each subject code and list every long question under its unit.
  2. Four weeks out: solve the Section C questions of one unit per day, writing full answers with diagrams, not just reading solutions.
  3. Two weeks out: attempt one complete paper per subject in three hours with a clock, then mark it yourself against your notes.
  4. Last week: revise the short answer bank you built from Section A questions and redo any numericals you got wrong.
Aman, a second year ECE student in Noida, could never finish his signals paper on time. Timing himself on two old papers showed he spent 40 minutes on Section A alone, writing paragraphs where three lines would do. He capped short answers at five minutes each and finished his next mock with time to recheck.

If you study from a previous year question paper AKTU released for B.Pharm, MBA or MCA, the same approach works, since those papers also follow unit based schemes.

Sample questions in the AKTU style

These questions were written by us for practice. Treat them as homemade drills; no real AKTU paper was copied.

  1. Short answer (maths): State Euler's theorem for homogeneous functions and use it to find x(∂u/∂x) + y(∂u/∂y) when u = x²y + xy². Hint: u is homogeneous of degree 3, so the answer is 3u.
  2. Short answer (programming): How does a while loop differ from a do while loop? Give one case where the second is the better choice.
  3. Long answer (electrical): State Thevenin's theorem and use it to find the current through a load resistor in a simple two source circuit of your own design.
  4. Unit question (physics): Derive the time independent Schrodinger equation and apply it to a particle in a one dimensional box to get its energy levels.
  5. Unit question (environment): Explain the causes of air pollution in Indian cities and suggest three control measures that a municipal body can apply.

Where to get genuine AKTU papers

The university hosts old question papers on its own website, aktu.ac.in, under the examination section, where papers are grouped by programme, session and subject. Your college library and exam cell usually keep printed sets of recent sessions too, and senior students often pass on their own copies.

  • Search by the exact subject code printed in your scheme, since course names change between schemes while codes identify the paper.
  • Prefer papers from the last two or three sessions of your own scheme.
  • Be careful with compiled solution sets shared online; they often contain errors in numericals.

Making old papers count with internal marks

Old papers prepare you for the 70 mark exam, but the 30 internal marks are earned during the semester through class tests, assignments and attendance. Many colleges model their sessional tests on the university paper, so practising past questions early helps with both. Clearing a subject has generally meant reaching a minimum share of the end semester marks as well as an overall minimum once internal marks are added; your college exam cell can confirm the current rule from the ordinance.

If you plan a postgraduate route after B.Tech, the same habit of timed practice carries over to the GATE previous papers, which cover much of the engineering core. Lateral entry and other admission routes into AKTU colleges appear in the entrance exams list on this site.

Frequently asked questions

Does AKTU publish previous year question papers officially?

Yes. Old papers are placed on the university website in its examination section, sorted by programme and session. Coverage is not complete for every subject and year, so your college library is a useful second source.

Are papers from the older 100 mark scheme still useful?

They are useful for question types and topic coverage, since many core subjects have kept similar units. Their marks split and number of questions differ, so time yourself using the format of your own scheme.

Do questions repeat in AKTU exams?

Exact repeats are not guaranteed, but standard derivations, theorems and problem types do come back often. Use repeats to set priorities, not as a reason to skip units.

Is there negative marking in AKTU theory papers?

No. The end semester theory papers are descriptive, so a partly correct answer with clear steps can still earn marks. Attempt every question you can.

What number of past papers per subject is enough?

Four or five recent papers of your own subject code are usually enough to cover every unit's question styles. Solve at least one of them in a full three hour sitting.

Where can I see the AKTU syllabus for my semester?

Every programme's scheme, year by year, sits on the university website. Our AKTU syllabus page explains the first year scheme and marks.
