The TNPSC group 2 syllabus covers a common preliminary paper of 200 objective questions (language, general studies and aptitude) and a main exam with a qualifying Tamil eligibility paper plus a General Studies Paper II that decides your rank. Group 2 posts take a descriptive Paper II, while Group 2A posts take an objective one.
The Commission recruits both groups through the Combined Civil Services Examination II, so you apply once and prepare one base. Below is the pattern as printed in the last full Group 2 notification we checked, the unit wise topics, and how to split your time between the two stages.

TNPSC group 2 exam pattern at both stages
| Part | Standard | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| General Tamil or General English (your choice) | SSLC | 100 |
| General Studies | Degree | 75 |
| Aptitude and Mental Ability | SSLC | 25 |
| Total | 200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours |
Prelims only filters candidates. Score 90 or more to go through; this score is then set aside when ranks are drawn.
| Paper | Group 2 posts | Group 2A posts |
|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Tamil eligibility test, SSLC standard, descriptive, 100 marks, 3 hours, minimum 40 (qualifying only) | |
| Paper II | General Studies, degree standard, descriptive, 300 marks, 3 hours, minimum 90 | Objective, 300 marks, 3 hours, minimum 90: GS 100 questions, general intelligence and reasoning 40, General Tamil or English 60 |
Paper II of a candidate who fails Paper I is not valued at all. The descriptive Paper II must be written fully in Tamil or fully in English, not a mix.
What changed in the recent cycles
Older schemes gave Group 2 interview posts a 40 mark oral test, with a total of 340. That recent notification lists selection as Paper II rank, then online and physical certificate verification, then counselling. For the following cycle, the Commission said the Group 2A Paper II would be held on OMR sheets instead of a computer based test, and it also revised the General Tamil and General English syllabus.
Because the pattern has moved more than once in a few cycles, check the scheme annexed to whichever notification you apply under, and adjust the plan to it.
TNPSC group 2 prelims syllabus: general studies units
The 75 GS questions are drawn from nine units:
- General science: scientific reasoning, mechanics and energy, electricity, light, sound and heat in daily life, acids, bases and salts, fertilisers and pesticides, genetics, nutrition, human diseases, ecology.
- Current events: welfare schemes, state profiles, persons and places in news, sports, books, recent science and technology.
- Geography of India: monsoon and climate, rivers, soils and minerals, forests, agriculture, transport, population and tribes, disasters and climate change.
- History and culture of India: Indus Valley, Guptas, Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, Marathas, Vijayanagara and Bahmani kingdoms, South Indian history.
- Indian polity: Preamble, rights and duties, Directive Principles, Union and State government, Panchayat Raj, judiciary, Lokpal, RTI.
- Indian economy: planning and NITI Aayog, RBI, fiscal and monetary policy, Finance Commission, GST, rural welfare.
- Indian national movement: early revolts, Congress, Gandhian struggle, leaders from across India including Bharathiar, V.O. Chidambaranar and Kamarajar.
- Tamil Nadu history and culture: Sangam literature, archaeology, Thirukkural, the Justice Party, Self Respect and Dravidian movements.
- Tamil Nadu development administration: human development indicators, reservation policy, welfare schemes, health and education systems, e governance.
Aptitude, language and the Tamil eligibility paper
Aptitude and mental ability (25 questions): simplification, percentage, ratio and proportion, LCM with HCF, interest of both kinds, time and work problems, areas with volumes, number series, dice, puzzles and visual reasoning.
General Tamil or General English (100 questions): SSLC level grammar, vocabulary, literature and authors, and comprehension. Most Tamil medium students choose General Tamil; pick whichever you can score in quickly, since it is half the paper.
Mains Paper I, Tamil eligibility test: translation from Tamil to English and back, precis, comprehension, expanding hints, an essay, official letter writing and knowledge of the Tamil language. You only need 40 of 100, but failing it voids your Paper II.
TNPSC group 2 mains syllabus for Paper II
The descriptive GS paper for Group 2 tests writing on:
- current events and contemporary social issues, environment
- Indian economy with rural and farm development
- science and technology, art and culture
- rationalist thought, including the Dravidian and Self Respect movements
- modern Tamil: computer Tamil, Tamil in office use, new coinages
- social and economic growth of Tamil Nadu, welfare schemes, reservation and social justice
For Group 2A the objective Paper II reuses the prelims style, but with 100 GS questions, 40 on reasoning and 60 on language, so your prelims notes carry straight over.
Splitting your hours between prelims and mains
Since prelims only screens, aim to clear 90 with a margin and save serious answer writing for the mains. Language is 100 of the 200 prelims questions, so it is the fastest lift for most aspirants.
- Months 1 and 2: Tamil Nadu units (VIII and IX) and polity daily, plus 30 language questions a day.
- Month 3: history, geography and economy, with one aptitude chapter every second day.
- Month 4: weekly full prelims on OMR sheets; mark carefully, as the bubbling rules are strict.
- After prelims: Group 2 aspirants write two answers a day and a weekly Tamil translation; 2A aspirants take timed objective sets.
Karthik from Madurai holds a sales job and finds roughly three free hours daily. He uses his commute for General Tamil grammar on flash cards and keeps evenings for one GS unit at a time. Two Sundays a month he writes a full Paper I, because one weak translation could cost him the whole mains.
Best books for the TNPSC group 2 syllabus
Your core source is the set of Class 6 to 12 school books issued by the Tamil Nadu government; the Commission's Tamil Nadu units follow their content closely. Pick up one reliable polity reference, the Tamil Nadu economic survey and the state budget summary for development administration, and the Commission's previous question papers on its website. If you are also writing the TNPSC Group 4 syllabus paper, much of the GS overlaps at a lower level, while the Group 1 syllabus takes those units to a deeper level. For papers set by other states, browse the state commission exams collection.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an interview in TNPSC Group 2?
Earlier schemes had a 40 mark oral test for Group 2 interview posts. The recent notification describes selection through the Paper II rank list, certificate verification and counselling. Check the current notification, since this has changed between cycles.
Will my prelims score affect my rank?
It will not. The preliminary paper simply screens, and you need 90 out of 300 to move on. Your rank depends on mains Paper II.
What is the TNPSC group 2 new syllabus change for 2A?
Under the recent scheme, Group 2A mains Paper II became an objective paper of GS, reasoning and language. For the next cycle the Commission announced it would be held on OMR rather than computer based.
Is English allowed as the medium for Paper II?
It is. Paper II can be answered in English or Tamil, but the whole paper must be in one language. Paper I, the Tamil eligibility test, involves Tamil in any case.
How old can a Group 2 applicant be?
For most posts, candidates in the general (others) category must be 18 to 32. Reserved communities get higher or no upper limits, and some posts such as Probation Officer and Forester have their own ranges.
Is the syllabus for TNPSC group 2 and 2A the same?
Prelims and Paper I are the same. Paper II differs in format: descriptive for Group 2 posts and objective for Group 2A posts.
