The UPMSP syllabus is the course that UPMSP, the Uttar Pradesh board of secondary education, sets for classes 9 to 12, and for most science, maths and social science subjects it follows the NCERT books also used by CBSE schools. Each subject has a written board paper, plus internal assessment or a practical that carries part of the marks.
This page explains how the UP board syllabus is organised for high school and intermediate, how marks are split, what the written paper looks like and where to get the official subject wise PDFs. Your school will tell you about any chapters the board drops or adds for a session, and the board's website has the final list.

How the UP board syllabus is built
From the session that began in April 2018, the board moved science, mathematics and most social science subjects in classes 9 to 12 to the NCERT syllabus, in stages, with social science for class 10 and the humanities for class 12 following a year later. Language subjects such as Hindi and Sanskrit rely on the textbooks the board itself prescribes, so check your school's book list for those.
Alongside the main subjects, the board runs internal assessment in areas such as moral education, yoga, sports and physical education, which schools grade and upload. These do not have a written board paper but are part of your record.
UPMSP syllabus for high school (classes 9 and 10)
High school students take five core papers (Hindi, English, Maths, Science, Social Science) and one more subject chosen from the options their school offers, such as Sanskrit or another language, drawing, music, computer or home science. The table shows how marks have usually been split in recent board papers.
| Subject | Written paper | Internal or practical |
|---|---|---|
| Hindi | 70 | 30 internal |
| English | 70 | 30 internal |
| Mathematics | 70 | 30 internal |
| Science | 70 | 30 practical |
| Social Science | 70 | 30 internal |
Some guides show social science as 80 written and 20 internal. Your school's model paper for the current session settles it.
What each subject covers
- Science: chemical reactions, acids and salts, metals, carbon compounds; life processes, control and coordination, reproduction and heredity; light, the human eye, electricity and magnetism; the environment.
- Mathematics: real numbers, polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, triangles, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and its uses, circles, areas and volumes, statistics and probability.
- Social Science: history of nationalism and the freedom struggle, resources and agriculture, power sharing and democracy, and the economics of development and money.
- Hindi and English: prose, poetry, grammar and writing tasks from the prescribed books.
Intermediate syllabus (classes 11 and 12)
In class 11 you choose a stream: science with maths or biology, commerce, or humanities. General Hindi or a Hindi paper is usually part of every combination. Practical subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology and geography have had a 70 mark written paper and a 30 mark practical, while subjects without a practical have had the full marks on the written paper.
Class 12 builds on class 11, and in science subjects both years follow NCERT chapter by chapter. For the full chapter list, marks per unit and the practical list, see the UP board class 12 syllabus page.
What the written board paper looks like
A high school paper lasts three hours and comes in two parts. The first is a set of multiple choice questions answered on an OMR sheet, worth about 20 of the 70 marks in recent papers, with no negative marking. The second part, on the answer book, has very short, short and long answer questions. Intermediate papers also mix objective and written questions, though the number of MCQs changes by subject.
Because the OMR part is quick to score, finish it calmly first, then move to the long answers. Shading the wrong circle cannot be undone, so read each option twice.
Passing marks and grades
A subject is cleared at 33 percent. The board reports grades along with marks; in recent results the bands ran from A for 80 percent and above, through B, C and D, down to E for below 33 percent. If you fall short in one or two subjects, the board usually offers a compartment or improvement exam after results; the exact rules come in the result notice for that year.
Study approach for UP board students
- Download the subject wise syllabus for your session and tick off chapters in your NCERT or board textbook as you finish them.
- Do every NCERT exercise and in text question in science and maths. Board papers stay close to these.
- For Hindi, learn the poets and writers listed in your book along with their main works, since short questions on them are common.
- Solve the board's model papers in three hours, including the OMR part, at least twice before the exam.
- Keep your practical file and internal work up to date. Thirty marks in most high school subjects come from there.
Comparing with CBSE
Since the core science and maths books are the same NCERT titles, much of the content overlaps with the CBSE class 10 syllabus, as well as the CBSE class 12 syllabus. The main differences lie in the language papers, the internal assessment pattern and how the written paper is set. Students who later sit entrance tests built on NCERT, such as engineering or medical exams, start from the same base whichever board they studied in. More boards are listed on the school boards page.
Frequently asked questions
Is the UP board syllabus the same as NCERT?
For most science, maths and social science subjects, yes. Language subjects such as Hindi and Sanskrit use the board's own prescribed books.
Where do I find the subject wise UPMSP syllabus PDFs?
The board posts subject wise syllabus PDFs for classes 9 to 12 on upmsp.edu.in. Your school also receives a copy each session.
How many marks are internal in UP board class 10?
In recent sessions most class 10 subjects had 30 internal or practical marks and 70 marks in the written paper. Confirm the split for your session in the model paper.
Do wrong OMR answers lose marks in UP board papers?
No. Wrong answers in the multiple choice part of the board paper do not reduce your marks.
What score clears a UP board subject?
Thirty three percent per subject is the minimum. Check the result rules for the year for how internal and written marks are combined.
Has the UP board reduced the syllabus?
The board has cut chapters in some past sessions, for example during the pandemic years. Whether any reduction applies now is stated in the syllabus PDF for the current session.
