The TET 2 syllabus is the paper Gujarat's State Examination Board sets for every aspiring classes 6 to 8 teacher in the state: 150 objective questions of one mark each, split into a common section 1 of 75 marks and a subject section 2 of 75 marks. Section 1 mixes child development, language and general knowledge, while section 2 tests the group you will teach, such as maths and science or social science.
In Gujarat the upper primary test is simply called TET-II (TET-1 is for classes 1 to 5). Many other states and the CTET call the same level Paper 2, so if you came here for another state, the comparison section below points you to the right page.

What TET-II decides for you
TET-II is an eligibility test, not a job exam. Passing opens the door once the state recruits upper primary teachers through its later selection process. The test itself has one written sitting; TET-II has no interview and no further round of its own.
- Step 1: apply online when the State Examination Board publishes the TET-II advertisement.
- Step 2: sit the single OMR based paper.
- Step 3: if you reach the pass mark, you receive the eligibility certificate and can apply in teacher recruitment rounds for classes 6 to 8.
Under the current NCTE rule, a TET pass certificate stays valid for life, so you clear it once and then focus on recruitment.
TET 2 exam pattern, section by section
| Section | Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1 (common) | Child development and pedagogy | 25 | 25 |
| Language: Gujarati and English | 25 | 25 | |
| GK with current affairs | 25 | 25 | |
| Section 2 (your group) | Maths and science, or social science, or languages | 75 | 75 |
| Total | 150 | 150 | |
A right bubble adds one mark, while a mistaken one simply scores zero, so leave no question blank. Reports on the paper put the time at 120 minutes, though a few older summaries mention other figures. Read the time printed in your own hall ticket and notification.
TET 2 syllabus for section 1: child development, language, GK
Whatever subject you plan to teach, everyone answers an identical section 1. Reports say you must clear this part, so rotate all three parts through your week.
Child development and pedagogy (25 marks)
- Growth of children aged 11 to 14, and the roles of heredity and surroundings
- How children learn, with classroom uses of each major theory, motivation and memory
- Intelligence, personality and individual differences
- Learning difficulties, inclusive teaching and children with special needs
- Assessment, evaluation and simple action research
- Duties placed on teachers by the RTE Act, 2009
Language: Gujarati and English (25 marks)
- Grammar and usage, vocabulary, sentence structure
- Comprehension of a short unseen text
- Language teaching skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, remedial work and common errors
GK block, also 25 marks
No detailed topic list has been widely published for this part. Expect Gujarat and India based general awareness, recent events, schemes and basic facts. Read the board's printed syllabus for the latest wording.
Section 2 syllabus for each subject group
Section 2 carries the other 75 marks and is set separately for each teacher group. Content is pitched at the classes 6 to 8 school level, mixed with questions on how you would teach it.
Maths and science
- Maths: number system, fractions and decimals, algebra basics, ratio and percentage, geometry, mensuration, data handling, plus error analysis and remedial teaching
- Science: food and its components, materials and matter, atoms and molecules, metals and non metals, acids and bases, light, sound, force and motion, work and energy, electricity and magnets, living organisms and the environment
Social science
- History: early societies, medieval kingdoms and the Delhi Sultanate, colonial rule, 1857 and the freedom struggle, then the years since 1947
- Geography: the solar system, earth and environment, resources and settlements
- Civics: the Constitution, government and democracy, the judiciary and social justice
- Teaching methods for social studies
Languages
Language teachers get a paper on the language they will teach and its teaching methods. Reports say the last 15 questions of this paper (136 to 150) are offered in one chosen language such as Sanskrit, Marathi or Urdu. Check the group list in the advertisement before you apply.
Is there a TET 2 new syllabus?
Many aspirants search for a TET 2 new syllabus because the board revised the paper and published an updated syllabus with its latest advertisement. The current version has general knowledge and current affairs inside section 1 next to child development and language, which is the layout shown above.
We could not confirm a full list of every line that changed from older papers, so do not rely on old guide books for section 1. Take the syllabus file attached to the newest advertisement from the board's own portal, compare it with what you have studied, and mark any new unit.
Pass mark and who can sit TET-II
Following the national TET guideline, general candidates usually need 60 percent, which is 90 of 150 marks, while the state allows reserved groups to pass with less. Some summaries quote 55 percent for them; your notification has the binding number.
For eligibility, TET-II is generally open to graduates who also hold a B.Ed, or who finished one of the integrated teaching degrees, and to final year trainees where the advertisement allows it. The subject of your degree decides which section 2 group you can pick. Rules on percentage and accepted courses change between advertisements, so read that part line by line.
A ten week plan matched to the 75 plus 75 split
The two halves carry equal marks, but section 1 has three different parts, so it needs more variety in your week.
- Use the Gujarat state textbooks for classes 6 to 8 as your base for section 2; questions follow that content closely.
- For child development, link each theory to a classroom case, since many questions describe a teacher's situation.
- Fill in all 150 circles; a guess can only help when wrong answers lose nothing.
How TET-II compares with Paper 2 elsewhere
Most teacher eligibility tests in India follow the NCTE framework, but the Gujarat paper differs in one clear way: it has a general knowledge block, which the CTET paper 2 does not. CTET paper 2 also runs 150 minutes and splits marks as 30, 30, 30 and 60.
- Candidates for the national test should open the CTET paper 2 syllabus.
- For the shared framework and the UP version, see the TET syllabus page.
- For Gujarat's secondary level test, see the TAT HS syllabus.

Frequently asked questions
What is TET 2 in Gujarat?
TET 2, or TET-II, is the Gujarat eligibility test you need to teach classes 6 to 8. It is conducted by the State Examination Board. TET-1 is the separate test for classes 1 to 5.
How many marks is the TET 2 paper?
The paper has 150 objective questions of one mark each. Section 1 carries 75 marks across child development, language and general knowledge, and section 2 carries 75 marks for your subject group.
Is there negative marking in TET 2?
Reports on TET-II mention no deduction for errors. A wrong answer simply earns zero, so leaving a circle empty throws away a free chance.

General candidates are usually expected to score 60 percent, or 90 marks. Reserved categories get a relaxation fixed by the state, so look up your own category's bar in the latest notification.
How long is the TET 2 certificate valid?
The NCTE has made TET certificates valid for life. You do not need to repeat TET-II once you have passed, though some candidates sit again to improve their score for recruitment merit.
