TCS NQT Syllabus: Foundation and Advanced Sections Explained

EntranceFreshers hiringCentre basedUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The TCS NQT syllabus has two parts: a Foundation section of numerical ability, verbal ability and reasoning ability, and an Advanced section of advanced quantitative and reasoning questions plus a coding round. The integrated test runs for about 190 minutes at an authorised TCS iON centre and is the main hiring test TCS uses for freshers.

Your Foundation score decides whether you are considered at all, while the Advanced section decides whether you are looked at for the higher paid Digital and Prime roles instead of only Ninja. Below you will find section timings, the topics in each part, how the coding round works and a six week practice plan. Engineering students sitting other tests can also compare the GATE CSE syllabus for core subjects.

How the TCS hiring process runs

For campus and off campus freshers, TCS uses the National Qualifier Test as its screening step. The flow is usually:

  1. Registration on the TCS hiring portal, where you choose the test and slot.
  2. Foundation section: the cut off round. Everyone takes it.
  3. Advanced section: needed for Digital and Prime consideration. Strong scores here move you up the role ladder.
  4. Interview: a mix of technical questions on your projects and basics, plus managerial and HR discussion. The invitation tells you the format.

TCS iON also runs NQT variants for other job families, each with its own sections. The layout below is the one reported for IT hiring, so check the test instructions in your registration before you prepare.

TCS NQT exam pattern and timing

TCS NQT pattern as reported for recent tests
PartSectionQuestionsTime
FoundationNumerical Ability2025 minutes
Verbal Ability2525 minutes
Reasoning Ability2025 minutes
AdvancedAdvanced Quantitative and Reasoning AbilityAbout 1525 minutes
Advanced Coding2 or 3 problems90 minutes

Each section is timed on its own and moves on when the clock ends, so you cannot carry spare minutes forward. Wrong answers are not reported to carry a penalty, so never leave an objective question blank. Question counts have shifted slightly between test windows, which is why the advanced counts are approximate.

TCS does not publish a fixed official syllabus document in the way government exams do. Read the instructions and sample questions shared after you register, and treat this table as the reported pattern, not a guarantee.

TCS NQT syllabus for the Foundation section

Numerical Ability

  • Number system, divisibility, LCM and HCF
  • Percentages, profit and loss, interest of both types
  • Ratio, mixtures and allegations, averages, ages
  • Work and time, speed, time and distance
  • Permutations, combinations and probability
  • Geometry, mensuration, clocks and calendars
  • Data interpretation from tables, bar graphs and pie charts

Verbal Ability

  • Reading comprehension
  • Sentence completion and word completion
  • Error spotting and sentence correction
  • Para jumbles and sentence joining
  • Choosing formal or informal sentences, and meaning of words in context

Reasoning Ability

  • Number series, letter series and word patterns
  • Seating arrangements and blood relations
  • Direction sense, syllogisms and statement conclusion
  • Data sufficiency and Venn diagram puzzles
  • Visual reasoning: cube folding, paper cuts and spatial questions

TCS NQT exam syllabus for the Advanced section

The advanced quant and reasoning questions use the same chapter names as Foundation but at a harder level: multi step percentage and probability problems, algebra, trigonometry and geometry, complex seating puzzles, letter analogies, coded symbols and odd one out sets.

The coding round is where Digital and Prime offers are won. You get two or three problems and can usually write in C, C++, Java or Python. Expect problems on:

  • Arrays and strings: searching, sorting, frequency counts, substrings
  • Basic maths: primes, GCD, number manipulation, patterns
  • Recursion and simple dynamic programming
  • Greedy choices and simulation of a described process
  • Edge cases in input handling, since hidden test cases decide the score

What decides Ninja, Digital or Prime

TCS does not publish cut off scores. What candidates consistently report is a ladder: a solid Foundation score keeps you in contention for Ninja; a strong Advanced quant and reasoning score plus at least one fully correct coding solution brings Digital into reach; and clearing most coding test cases with high aptitude scores is what Prime candidates describe. Interviews still decide the final offer.

Sneha, a final year B.Tech student, has six weeks. She can solve aptitude sums but freezes on coding. She spends mornings on 30 minute timed Foundation sets and evenings on one array or string problem, always testing it against empty input, large values and repeated characters. By week five she can finish one full problem in 40 minutes, which leaves time for the second.

Six weeks of practice matched to the TCS exam pattern

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: arithmetic chapters and reading comprehension, one timed set of 20 questions a day.
  2. Week 3: reasoning puzzles and visual reasoning, which most engineers neglect.
  3. Weeks 4 and 5: two coding problems a day in one language you know well; learn its input reading and string functions fully.
  4. Week 6: full length mocks with the real section timings, then go back over each miss and each failed test case.

Learning Python or brushing up? The Python syllabus page lists the basics worth knowing. Use a standard quantitative aptitude book for Foundation practice and your university data structures notes for coding. If you are weighing jobs against higher study, the CAT syllabus covers similar aptitude at a tougher level, and the entrance exams section gathers aptitude based tests worth a look.

Frequently asked questions

Does TCS NQT deduct marks for incorrect answers?

Recent candidates and reports agree that incorrect answers are not penalised in the written test. So attempt every objective item, while still reading the rules shown at the start of your slot.

Which programming languages are allowed in TCS NQT coding?

Candidates commonly report C, C++, Java and Python, with some other languages available. Pick the one you can write fastest and are sure about for input handling.

Is the Advanced section compulsory?

It is part of the integrated test, and it is required if you want to be considered for Digital or Prime roles. Skipping it or scoring low limits you to Ninja level consideration at best.

Can I take the TCS NQT from home?

Recent tests are held in person at authorised TCS iON centres. Your admit card gives the centre, date and reporting time.

How long is the TCS NQT score valid?

The NQT score is reported to be valid for two years, and you can reappear in a later test window to improve it. Check the current rule when you register.

Is TCS NQT for non engineers too?

TCS iON runs NQT variants for different job families, and graduates outside engineering can take some of them. Each variant has its own sections, so read the one you register for.
