The STET syllabus, in its most searched form the Bihar Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test run by the Bihar School Examination Board, is a single 150-mark paper: 100 marks on your chosen teaching subject and 50 marks on teaching skills and related abilities, finished in 2 hours 30 minutes.
STET simply means State Teacher Eligibility Test, so other states hold their own versions, but Bihar's is the one most aspirants mean. It has two papers: Paper 1 for secondary classes 9 and 10, and Paper 2 for senior secondary classes 11 and 12. What follows covers how the paper is split, which subjects you can pick, what each part covers, the pass marks by category and a study plan. A deeper Bihar-only breakdown sits on the Bihar STET syllabus page.

STET exam pattern at a glance
| Part | What it tests | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Specified subject matter | The one subject you choose to teach | 100 |
| Teaching arts and other competencies | Teaching aptitude and pedagogy, with general awareness and reasoning in some papers | 50 |
| Total, 150 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes | 150 | |
All 150 items are worth a mark apiece. Recent reports of the computer based format list no penalty for wrong answers, though at least one earlier report said there would be negative marking, so read the marking clause in the information bulletin of the cycle you sit for.
Paper 1 and Paper 2 subject options
You pick one subject per paper. The subject must match your degree, since eligibility is checked against it.
Paper 1, secondary (classes 9 and 10)
About 17 options were offered last time, among them Hindi, Urdu, Bangla, Maithili, Sanskrit, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Physical Education, Music, Fine Arts, Dance and special education.
Paper 2, senior secondary (classes 11 and 12)
About 30 options, covering the language subjects and also Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, Home Science, Commerce, Computer Science and Agricultural Science.
You may apply for more than one subject or paper by paying a separate fee for each, if you hold the required degree for each one.
What the subject section covers
The 100-mark subject part is pitched above the class you will teach:
- Paper 1: questions draw on the higher secondary and graduation syllabus. Mathematics, for instance, moves from class 11 and 12 algebra and calculus into graduation-level topics, and Social Science blends past and present India, maps, government and the economy at degree depth.
- Paper 2: questions reach postgraduate depth along with graduation and class 12 content. A Physics candidate should expect mechanics, electromagnetism, optics and modern physics at the level of an MSc syllabus.
A good first step is to place your chosen subject's official file next to the NCERT books of classes 11 and 12, mark what overlaps, and treat the rest as graduation or postgraduate reading.
Teaching arts and other competencies
This 50-mark block is common in spirit across subjects and is where steady scorers gain their edge. Expect questions on:
- Adolescent learners: growth, motivation, individual differences and learning difficulties
- Methods of teaching, lesson planning, classroom management and evaluation
- Inclusive education and the needs of learners with disabilities
- Communication in the classroom and the teacher's role in school and society
- General awareness and reasoning, which the Board has included in this part for some subjects (Computer Science is one)
Your B.Ed course already covers most of this. Revising your B.Ed notes on psychology and pedagogy is a faster route than starting fresh.
Qualifying marks and eligibility
| Category | Pass percentage |
|---|---|
| General | 50% |
| BC | 45.5% |
| EBC | 42.5% |
| SC, ST, PwD and women | 40% |
- Paper 1: a bachelor's or master's degree carrying 50% or more in the subject concerned, plus a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution.
- Paper 2: postgraduation with at least 50% in the subject, plus B.Ed. Some subjects accept other routes, such as 55% with an integrated B.Ed M.Ed.
- Age: minimum 21 years. The ceiling in the newest bulletin stood at 37 years for unreserved men; unreserved women, BC and EBC applicants got up to 40, SC and ST applicants up to 42, and PwD applicants a further 10 years.
Passing STET only makes you eligible. Actual hiring happens through a separate recruitment exam, and the certificate's validity is set by state rules.
So if your question is stet ka syllabus kya hai, the answer is your teaching subject at degree level plus pedagogy, as summarised above.
Splitting ten weeks the way the marks are split
Two thirds of the marks sit in your own subject, so give it two thirds of your time.
- Weeks 1 to 4: go through the official subject file unit by unit. Finish class 11 and 12 NCERT content first, then your graduation notes.
- Weeks 5 and 6: the teaching block. One hour daily on psychology and teaching methods from B.Ed material, with 25 practice questions.
- Weeks 7 to 9: postgraduate or advanced units of your subject, plus one full 150-question mock every weekend.
- Week 10: revise weak units and keep mocks to the exact 2 hours 30 minutes.
Hold this paper up against the CTET paper 2 syllabus when you also want central school eligibility for classes 6 to 8, and see the teaching exams section for other states.
Frequently asked questions
What is the STET exam pattern?
Bihar STET has 150 one-mark questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. 100 marks come from the subject you choose and 50 from teaching arts and other competencies. Paper 1 and Paper 2 share this pattern.
Is there negative marking in STET?
Recent reports of the computer based test mention no penalty, though one earlier report mentioned a penalty. Treat the information bulletin of your cycle as final on this point.
What is the difference between STET Paper 1 and Paper 2?
Paper 1 qualifies you to teach classes 9 and 10 and needs a graduate degree with B.Ed. Paper 2 covers classes 11 and 12, where a master's degree plus B.Ed is the entry bar. Paper 2 subject questions are harder.
What score clears STET?
General candidates need 50%, BC candidates 45.5%, EBC candidates 42.5%, and SC, ST, PwD and women candidates 40%, going by the newest bulletin.
Is STET the same as CTET?
No. CTET is a central test for classes 1 to 8. STET is a state test, and Bihar's version is for classes 9 to 12. The two differ in pattern and content, as the TET syllabus overview shows.
