The bihar stet syllabus splits one online paper of 150 questions into a 100 mark block on your teaching subject and a 50 mark block on teaching methods, child development and general skills. You get 2 hours 30 minutes, and every question carries one mark.
The Bihar School Examination Board holds the Secondary Teacher Eligibility Test in two papers. Paper 1 is for classes 9 and 10, and Paper 2 is for classes 11 and 12. Our general STET syllabus page gives the broad picture; here the focus is narrower. You will find how far each subject file reaches, the teaching block topics, the bihar stet exam pattern laid out as a table, a Hindi summary and a twelve week timetable.

What Bihar STET is and what it leads to
STET hands you eligibility, and nothing more. The certificate lets you enter the race whenever Bihar advertises teacher posts for classes 9 to 12, and the race itself is a different exam run by the Bihar Public Service Commission, explained on our BPSC TRE 4.0 syllabus page.
You choose one subject for each paper you apply for, and that subject must match your degree. Holding degrees that fit two subjects, or both papers, lets you register for each, with a fee per entry.
Bihar STET exam pattern
| Part | Content | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part A | Your chosen subject | 100 | 100 |
| Part B | Teaching arts and other competencies: pedagogy, child development, general awareness and skills | 50 | 50 |
| Total, 150 minutes, online | 150 | 150 | |
Some recent guides break Part B into roughly 30 questions on pedagogy and 20 on general skills. Reports for recent cycles also describe the online paper as free of any penalty for wrong answers. Treat both points as provisional, because the Board prints its marking clause and section split afresh in every bulletin.
Subject options in each paper
Paper 1 (classes 9 and 10) mirrors what a class 9 timetable looks like: languages such as Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Maithili and Bangla, then Maths, Science and Social Science, with options in physical education, the performing and visual arts, and special school education.
Paper 2 (classes 11 and 12) follows the plus two streams. Science teachers pick from the three natural sciences, humanities teachers from subjects like History, Political Science, Economics, Psychology or Philosophy, and there are slots for Commerce, Computer Science, Home Science, Agriculture and the languages.
The list changes slightly between cycles. Check the subject table in the notification before choosing, and remember that your degree subject must match.
How deep the subject part goes
Expect Part A to sit a level or two higher than your future classroom. Paper 1 pulls from plus two and degree material, while Paper 2 stretches to master's level. Three examples of the kind of ground the subject files typically cover:
- Social Science (Paper 1): ancient, medieval and modern India up to independence, landforms, climate and population of India with Bihar in focus, how the Union and panchayats are governed, and degree level economics of money, banks and growth.
- Mathematics (Paper 1): algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, probability and statistics, along with real analysis and abstract algebra from graduation.
- Hindi (Paper 2): history of Hindi literature by period, major poets and prose writers, grammar, poetics such as ras, chhand and alankar, and literary criticism, at the level of an MA syllabus.
Whatever your subject, read the official file alongside your own degree syllabus. Most units will look familiar; mark the ones that do not and plan extra time for them.
Topics in the teaching and skills block
- Adolescent learners: growth and development in the teenage years, motivation, individual differences, learning difficulties.
- Learning and teaching: theories of learning, teaching methods suited to secondary classes, lesson planning, use of teaching aids.
- Classroom and school: classroom management, communication, the teacher's role, school and community.
- Assessment: continuous and comprehensive evaluation, test construction, feedback.
- Inclusive education: children with special needs and ways to include them.
- General skills: general awareness with a Bihar angle, reasoning, basic computer knowledge and language use, as reported for recent papers.
This block is where your B.Ed course pays off directly. Teachers who revise their B.Ed psychology and methods notes often score higher here than in their own subject, because the questions are more predictable.
Passing marks and who can sit
| Category | Minimum percentage | Out of 150 |
|---|---|---|
| Unreserved | 50% | 75 |
| BC | 45.5% | about 68 |
| EBC | 42.5% | about 64 |
| SC, ST, PwD, women | 40% | 60 |
- Paper 1: graduation or postgraduation in the subject with at least 50%, plus a B.Ed; a four year integrated BA BEd or BSc BEd also counts.
- Paper 2: postgraduation in the subject with at least 50%, along with B.Ed; an integrated BEd MEd is also accepted where the bulletin allows it.
- Age: at least 21. The newest bulletin capped it at 37 for men in the unreserved group; women in that group and BC or EBC applicants had a ceiling of 40, the SC and ST ceiling was 42, and disabled applicants got 10 extra years.
Read the eligibility clause for your subject in the bulletin, since some subjects have their own degree rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the exam pattern of Bihar STET?
You face one online paper: 150 items of a mark each, finished within two and a half hours. One hundred questions come from your chosen subject and fifty from teaching arts and general competencies.
Is there negative marking in Bihar STET?
Recent reports of the online exam mention no penalty for errors. Rules may shift between cycles, so find the marking paragraph of your own bulletin before you settle on a guessing approach.
How do Bihar STET Paper 1 and Paper 2 differ?
Paper 1 covers classes 9 and 10 and needs a bachelor's in your subject with B.Ed, while Paper 2 is meant for classes 11 and 12, needs a master's with B.Ed, and its subject block is tougher.
What score clears Bihar STET?
For unreserved applicants the line is half the paper, 75 marks. It drops to 45.5% for BC, 42.5% for EBC and 40% for SC, ST, PwD and all women.
Will clearing Bihar STET get me a job?
Not by itself. It opens the door to apply, and posts are then filled through the commission's own teacher recruitment test when vacancies come out.
Can I take both papers in the same cycle?
Yes, provided your degrees fit both, with a separate fee for each. Check the exam schedule in the admit card notice so that two of your tests do not clash.
