SSC stenographer eligibility is one of the simplest among central exams: clear class 12 at any board the government recognises and be 18 to 30 years old for Grade C, or 18 to 27 for Grade D, on the first of August of that cycle. No shorthand or typing certificate is asked for at the form stage, but you must later take dictation at 100 words a minute for Grade C or 80 for Grade D.
Stenographers picked here take dictation and draft letters for officers across Union government offices. The rules below follow the latest notice, and reserved, disabled and several special groups can be older than the normal ceiling.

SSC stenographer eligibility and ssc steno eligibility by grade
| Point | Grade C | Grade D |
|---|---|---|
| Group | Group B, non gazetted | Group C |
| Age band | 18 to 30 | 18 to 27 |
| Education | Twelfth pass, or an equal qualification, from a recognised board | |
| Dictation speed in the skill test | 100 words a minute | 80 words a minute |
An unreserved candidate aged over 27 but not over 30 on the reference date can go for Grade C only. Many students tick both grades in the form so that a strong CBT score can work for either list.
Age relaxation table
The relief below is added to the upper limit of the grade you apply for.
| Group | Relief |
|---|---|
| Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe | Five years |
| Other Backward Class, outside the creamy layer | Three years |
| Person with benchmark disability (general) | Ten years |
| Person with benchmark disability who is also OBC | Thirteen years |
| Person with benchmark disability who is also SC or ST | Fifteen years |
| Ex servicemen | 3 years after deducting the military service rendered |
| Defence staff disabled in hostilities or in a disturbed area and released as a result | 3 years (8 for SC and ST) |
| Widows and divorced or judicially separated women who have not remarried | Up to 35 years (40 for SC and ST) |
| Central government civilian staff with 3 years of regular service | Up to 40 years (45 for SC and ST), subject to the post's rules |
Some relief, such as the one for central government staff or for women in the widowed and divorced group, applies only to certain grades or groups of posts. Go through the relaxation paragraph of your cycle's notice for the fine print, and keep the certificate that proves your claim ready for document checks.
Qualification rules
- Any stream of class 12 works. Science, commerce and arts are all accepted, and there is no minimum percentage.
- SSC wants the class 12 pass on record by its stated cut off, so a student waiting for a class 12 result should check that date carefully before applying.
- Higher degrees do not change your eligibility, so a graduate applies on the same footing as a class 12 pass candidate.
- A shorthand diploma, typing certificate or computer course is not required for the form. Your skill is judged in the skill test instead.
Neha finished class 12 in commerce and is 28. As an OBC candidate her upper limit is 30 for Grade D and 33 for Grade C, so she can apply for both and target the larger number of Grade D posts.
Nationality
Citizenship of India is the normal route. Apart from that, Nepal and Bhutan subjects, plus people of Indian descent who came from specified nations to settle here for good, may apply, but they must obtain a central government eligibility certificate before they are appointed.
The skill test you must be able to pass
Being eligible to apply is only half the story. Candidates who clear the CBT take a dictation of 10 minutes in English or Hindi, at the speed for their grade, and then transcribe it on a computer.
| Grade | Dictation speed | Transcription, English | Transcription, Hindi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade C | 100 wpm | 40 minutes | 55 minutes |
| Grade D | 80 wpm | 50 minutes | 65 minutes |
PwBD candidates who are eligible for a scribe get extra transcription time as set in the notice. Clearing the skill test is enough; your rank in the final list depends on CBT marks. You choose the language of the skill test in the application form.
Shorthand takes months to build. If you are starting from zero, give yourself half a year of daily practice before the CBT, aim for 60 to 70 wpm first, and then add speed with timed dictations.

Frequently asked questions
Which qualification does SSC ask from stenographer applicants?
A class 12 pass in any stream with any percentage. No shorthand certificate is required to apply.
What is the oldest I can be for SSC steno Grade D?
Between 18 and 27 on the August reference date. Reserved candidates add their relief to 27, for example 30 for OBC and 32 for SC or ST.
Can a graduate apply for SSC stenographer?
Yes. A degree is above the minimum, so graduates can apply if their age fits.
Can one form cover both grades?
Yes, if you fit both age bands. The application form lets you opt for both, and the CBT and skill test are common.
Do I need to know Hindi shorthand?
No. You can take the skill test in English or Hindi. Pick the language you have practised most when filling the form.
Is there any limit on attempts?
The notice sets no limit on attempts. You can apply each year until your category's ceiling is crossed.
