SSC CHSL Eligibility Criteria: Age, Qualification and Post Rules

SSC and centralNo minimum 12th %DEO: maths for someUpdated 26 Oct 2026

SSC CHSL eligibility rests on nationality, age and schooling: Indian citizenship (or one of a few allowed alternatives), an age between 18 and 27 on the reference date that the notice names, and a class 12 pass declared before applications close. Reserved groups can be older, and some Data Entry Operator posts insist on maths in class 12.

Everything here is taken from the newest CHSL notice issued by the Staff Selection Commission. Use it as a checklist for the ssc chsl exam eligibility rules, then compare your birth date and marksheet with the official text before paying any fee.

Nationality: the first eligibility for SSC CHSL

Four kinds of applicants are accepted. Indian citizens form the bulk, and the notice also admits Nepali subjects, Bhutanese subjects, and persons of Indian descent who shifted to India permanently from the countries the notice lists. Anyone outside plain Indian citizenship must obtain a Government of India eligibility certificate before SSC can send an appointment offer.

So for a typical Indian aspirant with a 12th certificate and the right age, the nationality rule is already met. The other conditions mainly shape which posts you may pick.

SSC CHSL eligibility by age

For the unreserved list, the permitted band runs from 18 up to 27. Each notice names a single date for counting age, which was 1 August of the exam year last time, and spells out the earliest and latest birth dates allowed. SSC reads your birth date from the class 10 certificate, so type it on the form exactly as printed there.

CHSL upper age limit after relaxation
WhoExtra years or revised limit
Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe5 years (limit 32)
Other Backward Classes3 years (limit 30)
PwBD, unreserved10 years (limit 37)
PwBD from the OBC list13 years (limit 40)
PwBD from the SC or ST list15 years (limit 42)
Former armed forces members3 years once military service is subtracted from actual age
Defence staff disabled in hostilities3 years; SC or ST get 8
Central civilian employees with at least 3 years of regular serviceCan apply until 40; SC or ST until 45
Women who are widows, divorcees or judicially separated and still singleCan apply until 35; SC or ST until 40

Every relaxation is counted once on top of the base limit. The PwBD rows for reserved groups already fold in the caste benefit, which is why a PwBD applicant on the OBC list stops at 40. Former soldiers should note their exact joining and release dates, as the notice subtracts that service from their age.

Qualification and the 12th percentage question

The basic requirement is a class 12 pass (or an equivalent certificate) through a board or university that is officially recognised. No minimum score is set. Whether you got 45% or 90%, a pass certificate makes you eligible, which answers the frequent query on ssc chsl eligibility 12th percentage.

Those still in class 12 may fill the form, provided their board publishes the result no later than the final day of online registration. A result "under process" on that day will not be accepted.

Rohan has written his board papers and is still waiting for results when the CHSL window opens. If the board publishes results before the deadline to apply, he qualifies. Should the result arrive even one day late, his chance shifts to the following cycle.

SSC CHSL posts and eligibility, including the DEO rule

CHSL posts and the 12th stream each one needs
PostPay levelClass 12 requirement
Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat AssistantLevel 2Any stream
Data Entry Operator with the consumer affairs and public distribution ministry, the culture ministry or SSC itselfLevel 4 or 5Science, with maths as a subject
All remaining DEO and DEO Grade A postsLevel 4 or 5Any stream

Here is the detail that trips many applicants on ssc chsl deo eligibility. Data entry jobs in the three offices shown above take only candidates who studied science with mathematics in class 12. Students from commerce or arts can still go for the clerk posts and for every other DEO vacancy. Past cycles also had postal and sorting assistant posts, yet the newest notice offers only LDC/JSA and DEO roles, so recheck the post list whenever a fresh notice appears.

SSC CHSL physical eligibility for male and female candidates

Almost all CHSL jobs are office roles, so there is no height check, chest measurement or race. The single exception named in the latest notice is the Border Roads Organisation. A BRO vacancy, when one is reported, is reserved for men, and those men must also clear the physical and medical standards set out in an annexure of the notice. Since women cannot pick a BRO post, no physical test applies to female candidates, and every remaining post treats male and female applicants alike.

BRO physical standards appear in a separate annexure and may be revised. Anyone opting for a BRO post should read that annexure in the current notice on ssc.gov.in.

Attempts, skill test and other conditions

  • Attempts: CHSL has no attempt ceiling. Apply every cycle until your category's age limit runs out.
  • Typing and data entry: selection depends on clearing Section IV of Tier 2. Clerk applicants need 35 English words or 30 Hindi words per minute; DEO applicants need 8,000 or 15,000 key depressions per hour, depending on the office.
  • PwBD candidates: those allowed a scribe receive compensatory time, and certain candidates can be excused from typing on producing the certificate the notice describes.
  • Fee: 100 rupees, waived for women and for SC, ST, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen applicants.

Documents to keep ready

  1. Matriculation certificate, used as proof of birth date
  2. Higher secondary marksheet and passing certificate

  4. Income and asset certificate for EWS, where it applies
  5. Disability certificate if you apply as PwBD
  6. Discharge book or service papers for former armed forces members
