The SPPU syllabus for any course is published by Savitribai Phule Pune University faculty wise, and it changes with the pattern your batch was admitted under. New first year students now follow a National Education Policy (NEP) based structure built on credits, majors and minors, while senior batches continue on the older pattern until they finish.
So the first question is not just which course you study but which pattern applies to you. This page explains how the syllabus files are organised, gives the first year engineering structure as a worked example, sets out the marks split and passing rules, and shows how to pick the right file on the university website.

How the SPPU syllabus is organised
Boards of Studies under each faculty draft the syllabus for their subjects, and the Academic Council approves it. Files are grouped first by faculty, then by programme and year.
| Faculty | Typical programmes |
|---|---|
| Science and Technology | BSc, MSc and engineering degrees |
| Commerce and Management | BCom, MCom, BBA, MBA |
| Humanities | BA and MA in languages, social sciences and related subjects |
| Interdisciplinary Studies | Programmes that cut across subjects, such as teacher education |
The programme lists above are general. The exact faculty for a course is shown against it on the university syllabus pages, so search there by programme name.
NEP pattern versus the older pattern
The university moved its degree programmes to an NEP compliant structure in phases: postgraduate courses first, then first year undergraduate arts, commerce, science and engineering. Under it:
- Undergraduate degrees in arts, commerce and science are four year programmes with a major subject, a minor and skill or value based courses.
- Credits are earned each semester, and exit points allow a certificate, a diploma or a degree depending on credits completed.
- Courses such as the Indian Knowledge System and co curricular activities carry their own credits.
Students admitted before the switch keep studying under the older pattern's syllabus. When you download a file, check the pattern name printed on its first page against the one on your admission or hall ticket.
First year engineering SPPU syllabus as an example
The NEP based first year engineering course gives a clear picture of how a semester is built. Each semester carries 22 credits, and several subjects swap between semester I and II for different student groups.
| Course | Credits | Semester |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics I and II | 4 each | I and II |
| Engineering Physics or Engineering Chemistry | 4 | One in each semester |
| Basic Electrical or Basic Electronics Engineering | 3 | One in each semester |
| Engineering Graphics or Engineering Mechanics | 3 | One in each semester |
| Fundamentals of Programming Languages | 3 | I |
| Programming and Problem Solving | 3 | II |
| Workshop practice or Design Thinking and Idea Lab | 1 | One in each semester |
| Professional Communication Skills | 2 | I |
| Indian Knowledge System | 2 | II |
| Co curricular course | 2 | I and II |
Branch specific subjects begin from the second year, each with its own syllabus file.
Marks split and passing rules
For engineering theory courses under the NEP pattern, each course is marked out of 100:
- Comprehensive continuous evaluation (30 marks): a unit test, assignments or case studies, and a seminar, quiz or open book test.
- End semester examination (70 marks): the written university paper.
- Passing: at least 40 percent in continuous evaluation, 40 percent in the end semester paper, and 40 percent overall. Practical, oral and term work heads also need 40 percent each.
Results use a 10 point grade scale, with O for 90 percent and above and F below 40 percent. Moving to higher years depends on carry on (ATKT) rules based on credits earned in earlier semesters.
Arts, commerce and science programmes use their own split between internal and university marks, so read the evaluation section printed in your course file.
Downloading the right syllabus file
- Visit unipune.ac.in and look for the link to syllabi on the home page.
- Choose your faculty, then your programme and year.
- Pick the file marked with your pattern; NEP files usually say so in the title.
- Check for later corrigenda or revised versions of the same file, which the university posts separately.
- Match the course codes with those on your exam form.
Using the syllabus to plan semester study
A Pune University syllabus file usually divides each course into units, often five or six, with hours and reference books listed. That layout is your study plan.
- Mark which units are covered by the unit test, which by assignments, and which only by the end semester paper.
- Give more time to units with more teaching hours; they tend to carry more questions.
- Solve past university papers of the same pattern, since question styles changed with the new structure.
- Use the reference books listed in the file rather than general guides.
After an SPPU degree: entrance exams to plan for
Many SPPU students sit for further entrance or recruitment exams in their final year. Engineering students often look at the GATE syllabus, science and arts graduates at the CUET PG syllabus for central university admission, and those aiming for state service at the MPSC syllabus. Diploma holders joining engineering in the second year come from the state board pattern described on the MSBTE K scheme page. The entrance exams section lists more.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the official SPPU syllabus available?
On the university website, unipune.ac.in, in its syllabus section arranged by faculty and programme. Autonomous colleges may also post their own approved syllabus.
Is the NEP pattern applicable to all SPPU students?
No. It applies to batches admitted after the university switched each programme to the NEP structure. Earlier batches continue with the older pattern until they complete the degree.
What score clears an SPPU engineering theory course?
Under the NEP based engineering rules, you need 40 percent in continuous evaluation, 40 percent in the end semester paper and 40 percent overall in each theory course.
Can I leave an SPPU undergraduate degree midway with a qualification?
The NEP structure has exit points. Completing the credits of the first year can earn a certificate and two years a diploma, subject to the rules of your programme.
Why does my friend's syllabus differ for the same course?
Usually because you are on different patterns, or one of you is in an autonomous college. Compare the pattern name and course codes on both files.
Does SPPU change the syllabus every year?
Revisions are periodic rather than annual: Boards of Studies revise courses from time to time and issue corrections. Always download the latest file for your pattern at the start of each semester.
