Graduate degree, age 20 to 33, A-2 vision and relaxations for the Level 6 post

RRB section controller eligibility criteria in full

RailwayGraduate levelLevel 6 payUpdated 26 Oct 2026

RRB section controller eligibility rests on a graduate degree of any stream, being aged 20 to 33 on the cut off day the CEN picks (reserved groups get extra years), and a pass in the A-2 medical, which demands sharp eyesight without glasses. Final year students cannot apply, because your graduation must be over, result and all, while applications are still open.

The post sits at Level 6 of the 7th CPC pay matrix with a starting basic of Rs 35,400, and the controller keeps trains moving across a section of track. That safety role explains why the medical and the computer based aptitude test (CBAT) matter as much as the written paper. Each rule here is drawn from the newest section controller CEN, the railway's centralised recruitment advertisement.

Section controller in railway eligibility: the quick view

Four gates decide whether your form survives scrutiny:

  1. Nationality: Indian, or one of the groups the CEN lists.
  2. Age: between 20 and 33, measured on one fixed date.
  3. Degree: completed and declared before the last day of applying.
  4. Medical: the A-2 standard, checked once your rank is known.

The written CBT and the CBAT come in between. Clearing them means nothing if a gate above shuts later, so test yourself against all four now.

RRB section controller eligibility on nationality

The CEN accepts:

  • Indian citizens
  • Subjects of Nepal or of Bhutan
  • Migrants of Indian origin arriving from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Vietnam or certain East African countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to settle in India permanently

Anyone in the second or third group must show a Government of India certificate of eligibility at document verification. Without it, the selection is cancelled even after a strong score.

Age limit and relaxation for section controller

The band is 20 to 33 years. Your birth date has to match your matriculation certificate exactly; even a one day mismatch with the online form leads to rejection.

Upper age concessions in the latest section controller CEN
GroupConcession
OBC (non creamy layer)3 years, so up to 36
SC or ST5 years, so up to 38
Persons with benchmark disability10 years (UR or EWS), 13 (OBC), 15 (SC or ST)
Ex-servicemen with over 6 months of service after attestation3 years (UR or EWS), 6 (OBC), 8 (SC or ST), after deducting the service period from actual age
Serving Group C or former Group D railway staff, and substitutes, with 3 years of serviceUp to age 40 (UR or EWS), 43 (OBC), 45 (SC or ST)
Widows, and divorced or legally separated women, provided they stay unmarriedUp to age 35 for UR or EWS; 38 for OBC; 40 for SC or ST
Staff of quasi administrative railway offices such as canteens and cooperativesLength of service or 5 years, whichever is lower

Two points trip people up. A reserved category applicant who opts for an unreserved vacancy loses the concession, and where more than one concession could apply, only the single most generous one is given, not a sum.

Educational qualification and final year students

What the notice wants is graduation, or something equivalent to it, from a recognised university or institute of standing. No subject or minimum percentage is fixed, so a BA, BCom, BSc, BTech or any other graduate is welcome. The annexure on qualifications in the CEN is the final word if your degree came through distance or open learning, so read it once.

The degree must be complete by the last date of applying. The CEN states that candidates awaiting results of the final examination should not apply.

Sneha's final semester marks are due a few weeks after the closing day. Under this rule she cannot apply in the current round, so she uses the gap to practise data interpretation and reasoning sets and plans to sit the next section controller CEN with her degree in hand. Meanwhile she applies to graduate level railway posts whose rules suit her timeline.

A-2 medical standard explained

Section controller is a safety post, and the A-2 standard reflects that:

  • Far sight: 6/9 for each eye, unaided, no fogging test
  • Near sight: N6 (Sn 0.6) for each eye, unaided
  • Pass in colour vision, binocular vision, night vision and myopic vision tests
  • Fit in all other respects

Anyone whose eyes were corrected by LASIK or a similar refractive operation is barred and must sign a self declaration at document verification. You also carry a vision certificate in the CEN's format to the CBAT; without it you are not allowed to take that test. If you fail the medical, no other post is offered.

Medical rules, annexures and concession tables are reprinted in every CEN. Go through your own RRB's current CEN before applying, and get a private eye test first if you are unsure.

Fee, refund and the one RRB rule

The fee is Rs 500 for most applicants, and Rs 400 of it comes back after you sit the CBT. Women, transgender candidates, ex-servicemen, SC, ST, minorities, economically backward classes and PwBD pay Rs 250, which is returned in full after the CBT. Refunds go only to an Aadhaar linked bank account, less bank charges.

You may apply to just one RRB. Forms sent to two or more boards are all rejected and the candidate can be debarred from future railway exams.

Frequently asked questions

My degree result is pending; may I still send the section controller form?

No. The notice says those awaiting final examination results should not apply, since the degree must be held by the closing day. Wait for the next CEN once your degree is complete.

What is the section controller age limit?

Between 20 and 33 years on the CEN's reference date for unreserved and EWS candidates. Non creamy layer OBC candidates may be 3 years older, SC or ST candidates 5 years, with larger concessions for PwBD, ex-servicemen and railway staff.

Which degree is needed for section controller in railway?

A bachelor's in any field will do, provided the university is recognised; equivalents count too. There is no subject restriction and no minimum percentage in the latest notice.

Can I become a section controller if I wear glasses?

Only if, with the spectacles off, each eye still reads 6/9 at distance and N6 up close. The A-2 standard does not allow glasses for the test, and anyone who has had LASIK or similar refractive surgery is not eligible.

Is it allowed to send forms to two RRBs at once?

No. One candidate may apply to one RRB only. Multiple applications lead to rejection of all of them and possible debarment.

Is there a minimum marks rule in the CBT?

Yes, a minimum percentage by community is needed to be considered for the CBAT, and the CBAT itself must be cleared. Our syllabus page lists those floors, and the latest notice confirms them for each round.
