RBI office attendant eligibility has one twist that surprises many applicants: you need a class 10 pass in a state or UT that the chosen regional office looks after, and you must not hold a graduate degree on the reference date. Add an age of 18 to 25 years (more for reserved groups) and a working command of the regional tongue in all four skills, and you have the full picture.
The Reserve Bank fills these Class IV posts office by office, so the rules are written around where you studied and which language you know. The sections below unpack each condition and the concessions that come with it.

Why this post has state wise rules
Office attendants work in the RBI's regional offices, handling files, cash bundles, messages and day to day upkeep. Since the job means talking to local staff and visitors, the bank recruits separately for each office and ties eligibility to that region. In practice this means you are competing only with candidates of the same office, and your state of schooling and local language decide which office you can choose.
Recent rounds have allowed one application per candidate, for one office. Pick carefully if you studied in one state and now live in another.
RBI office attendant eligibility on education
- Class 10 (SSC or matriculation) passed from a board, from the state or UT that falls under the regional office you choose
- Undergraduate status on the reference date; anyone already holding a bachelor's degree or higher is excluded
- Appearing in class 10 is not enough; the pass must be complete
Class 12 or a diploma does not disqualify you, and neither does being partway through a degree, as long as the degree is not complete on the reference date. Hiding a degree is risky, because certificates are checked before joining.
For ex-servicemen the bank has applied its own test: a class 10 pass together with a minimum stretch of defence service, provided the person is not a graduate from outside the forces. The exact service period is stated in the notice.
Age limit and relaxation table
Your age is measured on the reference date the bank fixes, lately the first day of January of the recruitment year. The base band is 18 to 25.
| Category | Extra years | Highest age allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe | 5 | 30 |
| Backward classes, outside creamy layer | 3 | 28 |
| Disabled (PwBD) in the general or EWS pool | 10 | 35 |
| Disabled (PwBD) from backward classes | 13 | 38 |
| Disabled (PwBD) from SC or ST | 15 | 40 |
| Former armed forces personnel | Years served, then 3 more | Capped at 50 |
| Widowed women, and women divorced or legally separated, not married again | Ceiling becomes 35 | 35, or 40 if SC or ST |
| Candidates with work experience in the RBI | Equal to that experience | Up to 3 extra years |
Language proficiency and the LPT
Being able to handle the local language is part of eligibility, not just a test. After the online exam, those on the shortlist sit the LPT, a check of the regional office's working language. It only qualifies or disqualifies: fail it and a high written score cannot rescue you. Offices covering more than one state or UT list the language for each, so check your office's entry in the notice.
Nationality and the regional link
Recent notices ask for Indian citizenship. Because the class 10 rule already links you to a state or UT under the recruiting office, the RBI uses that schooling as your regional tie, and it is backed by the language requirement. If your class 10 board certificate is from another state, you cannot use a later address to switch offices.
Fee and documents
In the latest round General, OBC and EWS applicants paid Rs 450 plus GST, while SC, ST, PwBD and former servicemen paid only an intimation charge of Rs 50 plus GST. Serving RBI staff paid nothing. Keep these ready for verification:
- Class 10 marks sheet and pass certificate, which also proves your date of birth
- Proof of the highest class you have studied up to, to show you are not a graduate
- Caste, EWS or disability certificate in the central format, if you claim a concession
- Armed forces discharge papers, where relevant
- Photo ID and the online form printout
After you pass the eligibility check
Once the rules fit you, turn to the exam. The RBI office attendant syllabus page walks through all four sections of the online test. Practise on the RBI office attendant previous papers guide, and see the cut off page for past qualifying marks by office. Related banking jobs sit under the bank exams hub.
Frequently asked questions
I already have a degree. Am I eligible?
Sadly not. The bank wants undergraduates only on the reference date. A person who already holds a bachelor's degree or anything higher is not eligible, though someone still studying for a degree can apply.
Do I need class 12 to apply?
Not at all. The minimum is a class 10 pass from the state or UT under the office you apply to. A class 12 pass is fine and does not count against you.
Which ages does the office attendant post accept?
Between 18 and 25 on the day the notice fixes. SC and ST applicants have 5 more years, non creamy layer OBC 3 and PwBD between 10 and 15; former soldiers and widows follow their own limits.
Can I apply to an RBI office outside my home state?
Only if you passed class 10 from a state or UT under that office and know its local language. Recent notices let you choose just one office.
Does a poor LPT score cost me the job?
Yes, since the LPT is pass or fail. If you do not clear it, you are not selected, whatever your score in the online test.
