ECGC PO exam pattern and syllabus

BankingGraduate levelCentral PSU officerUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The ECGC PO exam pattern, for Probationary Officer (generalist) posts at the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India, is a single online sitting with a 200 question objective test across five sections and a 40 mark descriptive English test, followed by an interview. Each section has its own time limit, and a wrong objective answer costs a quarter mark.

ECGC is a government owned credit insurer for exporters, and its officer exam feels much like a bank PO mains without the prelims round. If you are already preparing for bank exams, most of the ECGC PO syllabus will look familiar; the difference is how much depends on one day.

Selection stages at a glance

There is no separate prelims to clear first. Everything written happens in one session, so your preparation has to peak for a single date.

  1. Online objective test: five sections, each with a separate timer and a sectional qualifying mark.
  2. Descriptive English test: written on the computer in the same sitting. Only the scripts of candidates who clear the objective test and rank high enough are marked.
  3. Interview: for those shortlisted on written marks. Recent information handouts list it at 60 marks, with a minimum of 40 percent for general candidates and 35 percent for reserved categories.

For the final list, written marks count for 80 percent and the interview for 20 percent.

Other officer exams with a similar feel are grouped on the bank exams hub, including the SBI PO syllabus.

Every question carries one mark, and every incorrect choice loses 0.25. Spare minutes in one section do not carry over, so pace each block on its own. When ECGC advertises specialist posts, the paper replaces part of this with a professional knowledge section; check the handout for that scheme.

Section sizes have shifted slightly between cycles. Treat the information handout released with your admit card as final.

The descriptive English paper

You type two answers: one essay and one precis, each worth 20 marks, picking one topic from two choices in each. Recent cycles have given about 40 minutes for the pair. Essay topics tend to touch trade, exports, the economy, technology and social issues, so the current affairs you read for general awareness doubles as essay material.

Precis rewards compression. Practise turning a 300 word passage into about a third of that length without adding opinions, and keep a running word count on screen.

What deserves the most hours

Reasoning and quantitative aptitude together make up half the marks and take 80 of the 140 minutes. Puzzles and data interpretation sets decide those sections, so practise them daily. General awareness pays well for its time: 40 marks in 20 minutes. Read about exporters, trade policy, foreign trade data and the corporation's own role, since a few questions often come from the insurance and trade world it works in. Computer knowledge is small but quick to secure.

Neha cleared a bank PO prelims last year and has eight weeks before ECGC. She keeps her mains level puzzle practice, adds 20 minutes of export and trade news daily, and writes one essay and one precis every Sunday under a 40 minute timer.

An eight week plan

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: arithmetic and basic reasoning revision, plus a daily reading comprehension.
  2. Weeks 3 to 5: advanced puzzles, data interpretation and high level arithmetic; build general awareness notes for the last six months.
  3. Week 6: computer knowledge and descriptive writing practice.
  4. Weeks 7 and 8: full mocks with the sectional timer, then error analysis after each.

Since there is a sectional cut off, do not let one weak section slide. Aim to be safe in every section before chasing a high score in any one of them.

Study material

Standard quantitative aptitude and reasoning books written for bank PO level, a grammar reference for English, plus a monthly digest of news cover most needs. The corporation's annual report and the commerce ministry's trade releases help with the export angle. Full past papers are rarely made public, so lean on bank PO mains level practice sets and on any sample questions ECGC puts out with its information handout.
