The Delhi police driver syllabus rests on one online paper of 100 questions, and half of that paper is about road sense, traffic rules and vehicle maintenance. The other 50 questions test current affairs, logic and basic arithmetic, much like other Delhi Police constable papers.
Clearing the CBT is only the first gate for Constable (Driver) posts. You must then pass a physical test, a practical driving test on light and heavy vehicles, and a medical check. The sections below give the pattern from the latest notification we checked, the topics behind each section, and a plan that fits someone who already drives for a living.

Selection stages for Constable (Driver)
Candidates move through the stages in this order, and anyone who falls short at a stage is out of the race:
- Computer based test: the only stage whose marks build the merit list.
- PE&MT: a qualifying physical round: one race, a long jump, a high jump and body measurements.
- Trade test: a practical driving and vehicle knowledge test, qualifying in nature.
- Document verification and medical examination.
Since the final rank depends on CBT marks, a strong driver who scores poorly in the paper will not make the list. Give the written test real study time even if the trade test feels easy.
Delhi police driver exam pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Road sense, vehicle maintenance, traffic rules and signals | 50 | 50 |
| General awareness (GK and current events) | 20 | 20 |
| Reasoning (general intelligence) | 20 | 20 |
| Numerical ability | 10 | 10 |
| Total | 100 | 100 (90 minutes) |
Every wrong option costs you a quarter mark, while skipped questions score nothing. Questions are set around matriculation level and are printed side by side in Hindi and English.
Road sense and vehicle maintenance topics
This section decides most ranks because it carries 50 marks. Expect questions on:
- Traffic signs: mandatory, cautionary and informatory signs, road markings and signals given by a traffic police officer
- Rules of the road: lane driving, overtaking, right of way, speed limits, parking, using indicators and horn
- Driving licence types, vehicle documents and basic penalties under the motor vehicle rules
- Engine basics: lubrication, cooling, fuel system, clutch, gearbox and brakes
- Routine checks: tyre pressure, battery water, engine oil grade, coolant, fan belt and hoses
- Vehicle pollution and noise, pollution checks and fuel saving habits
- Safe driving at night, in fog and rain, and first steps after an accident
The other 50 marks: GK, reasoning and maths
General awareness (20 questions)
Current events, sports, Indian history and culture, geography, the economy, the Constitution and polity, and everyday science.
Reasoning, 20 questions
Coding and decoding, analogies, number and letter series, classification, odd one out, direction sense, blood relations and simple figure or spatial questions.
Numerical ability (10 questions)
Mostly class 8 to 10 arithmetic: percentages, averages, ratios, the number system, interest, profit with discount, trains and boats style speed sums, work rates and simple mensuration.
The executive constable paper tests these same three areas, so practice sets made for it help here too; see the constable (executive) page. Ministerial posts follow a different paper, explained on the head constable and HCM pages.
PE&MT standards
| Age group | High jump | Long jump | 1600 m race |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 or younger | 3 feet 6 inches | 12.5 ft | 7 min |
| Over 30, up to 40 | 3 feet 3 inches | 11.5 ft | 8 min |
| Over 40 | 3 feet | 10.5 ft | 9 min |
Rows for those above 30 apply chiefly to serving staff and former soldiers, who are allowed to be older. The measurement standard is 170 cm of height, with the chest measured at 81 cm normal and at least 85 cm fully expanded, with some relaxation for hill area residents, ST candidates and certain other groups.
Trade test: the driving stage
| Part | Marks | To qualify |
|---|---|---|
| Driving a light motor vehicle: forward, reverse and parking | 50 | 25 |
| Driving a heavy motor vehicle: forward, reverse and parking | 50 | 25 |
| Traffic signs, road sense, driving rules and route reading | 25 | 12.5 |
| Vehicle maintenance knowledge | 25 | 12.5 |
Each part must be cleared on its own. Reversing and parking a heavy vehicle in a marked space is where many candidates struggle, so practise it on the kind of vehicle you will be tested on.
A ten week plan for working drivers
- Weeks 1 to 4: road signs, driving rules and maintenance every day; numerical ability three days a week.
- Weeks 5 to 7: add reasoning drills and a short daily news reading habit, plus static GK from NCERT class 9 and 10 social science.
- Weeks 8 to 10: a pair of full length timed mocks each week and going back over every mistake, especially in the 50 mark section.
Begin running early so the 1600 m target is within reach well before the PE&MT date. More police recruitments are listed in the defence and police section, and for closing scores of the executive post, open the Delhi Police cut off analysis.

Frequently asked questions
Is a heavy vehicle licence compulsory for Delhi Police driver?
Yes. The most recent notice required a valid heavy motor vehicle driving licence on the closing date of the online form. A light vehicle licence alone is not enough.
What qualification and age are needed?
Applicants must have passed class 12 (senior secondary) and should know basic vehicle upkeep. The latest cycle allowed ages 21 to 30, and SC, ST and OBC applicants get extra years, as do departmental staff and ex-servicemen.
Can women apply for the Constable (Driver) post?
The latest notification was for male candidates only. Check each new notice, as the post and its gender rules are set by Delhi Police for every recruitment.
Will my driving test score change my rank?
No. The trade test and PE&MT are qualifying. Your rank comes from CBT marks.
How hard is the road sense section?
Questions are factual rather than tricky, but they ask for exact rules and sign meanings. Drivers who revise signs and maintenance points from a written guide usually score well here.
Does the selection include an interview?
There is none. Once the CBT, PE&MT and trade test are cleared, your papers are checked and a doctor examines your fitness.
