CTET Previous Year Question Paper 2: Practice Guide

Teaching150 questions2.5 hoursUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Solving one CTET previous year question paper 2 under exam conditions is the nearest thing to sitting the real upper primary test, because the format of 150 items in 150 minutes has stayed steady across recent sessions. Solving old papers shows you how CBSE frames pedagogy questions, how long the reading passages are, and where your own score leaks.

This page explains what past paper 2 sets cover, a three round method of practice, four practice items we wrote to mirror the real style, and where to find genuine papers and answer keys. For the full topic list, keep the CTET paper 2 syllabus open beside you.

The paper 2 layout that old sets share

Keep this structure in mind as you work so you can spot your weak spot quickly.

Section structure in recent paper 2 sets
BlockQuestionsWhat it checks
Child Development and Pedagogy30Learning theories, inclusion, assessment
Language I3015 on passages, 15 on teaching language
Language II3015 on passages, 15 on teaching language
Your subject block60Content plus pedagogy (20 and 10 per subject in maths and science; 40 and 20 in social studies)

Each question carries one mark and wrong answers cost nothing, so an old paper also trains you to finish all 150 within the time.

What each CTET previous year question paper 2 reveals

When you go through several sets side by side, a few habits of the paper become clear.

  • Theory comes wrapped in a classroom. A typical CDP item sketches a lesson, a student's behaviour or a teacher's choice, and you pick the most suitable response. Learning the names of theorists is not enough; you must know how their ideas look in a lesson.
  • Inclusion and assessment recur. Questions on children with special needs, learners from deprived backgrounds and assessment for learning come up in nearly every paper.
  • Language passages test inference. Prose and poem questions ask about meaning, tone and word use as much as grammar.
  • Content stays close to NCERT. Science and social studies facts mostly come from class 6 to 8 textbooks, with occasional items that need class 9 or 10 knowledge.
  • Statements and assertion style items appear in pedagogy, where you choose the best option among several reasonable ones.

Pass rates show how demanding this is. In the most recent February session, about 18.67 lakh candidates appeared for paper 2 and roughly 3.47 lakh qualified, a little under one in five.

How to practise in three rounds

  1. Diagnostic round: take one full paper with a strict 150 minute timer before you start serious study. Mark your score section by section.
  2. Topic round: after finishing each part of the syllabus, solve only that section from four or five different years. This shows how one topic is asked in several ways.
  3. Exam round: in the last six weeks, solve two full papers every week at the real paper 2 timing of 9:30 in the morning, on an OMR-style sheet you print or draw yourself.

After every paper, write the reason behind each wrong answer: did not know, misread, or picked a good option instead of the best one. The third reason is the most common in pedagogy and the easiest to fix with practice.

Imran scored 41 out of 60 in social studies but only 16 out of 30 in Child Development on his first old paper. He moved two of his weekly study hours to pedagogy and, on each wrong item, wrote one line on why the correct option was more child-centred. Within a month his CDP score was steady above 22.

Sample questions in the paper 2 style

These are our own practice items, written to match the style of the real test. None of them comes from a CBSE booklet.

  1. A class 7 student keeps giving a wrong answer to a fraction problem using the same method each time. The teacher should first:
    (a) give more practice sums (b) find out the thinking behind the method (c) ask a classmate to explain (d) move to the next topic
Answer: (b), because errors show how the child is thinking.
  2. The range of tasks a class 6 learner manages only with a teacher's support, but not yet independently, is best described by which idea?
    (a) schema (b) zone of proximal development (c) assimilation (d) scaffolding
    Answer: (b).
  3. The best way to begin a lesson on the water cycle in class 6 is to:
    (a) dictate the definition (b) ask students where puddles go after rain (c) show the diagram and test it (d) assign the chapter for reading
Answer: (b), as it starts from experience.
  4. A social studies teacher uses a court visit and a mock trial for the chapter on the judiciary. This mainly supports:
    (a) rote memory (b) experiential learning (c) competition (d) punishment-free discipline
    Answer: (b).

Where to find genuine papers

Use ctet.nic.in as your official source. CBSE releases the provisional answer key there after each session so candidates can raise objections, and the website has carried sample and practice material in English and Hindi. Check the notices section soon after an exam, because the answer key window stays open only for a few days. Practise from papers that match the current pattern of 150 questions, and be careful with printed collections whose answers do not match the official key.

CBSE decides what it publishes after each session. If a paper or key is not available on the official website, confirm any answer against the NCERT textbook before you trust it.

Hindi and English medium papers

Booklets in this test print every item in both Hindi and English for the CDP part and the subject block, so you will find the same question in Hindi and English. Language sections are in the languages you chose. If you studied in Hindi medium, practise reading pedagogy terms in both languages, because a translated word can change the meaning of an option. Solving old papers in your stronger language first and then reading the other version is a useful habit.

Using old papers with the rest of your plan

Old papers work best when tied to the syllabus. Keep a simple sheet with the five blocks and tick topics as you meet them in past sets. Any topic you never see in practice deserves one revision pass anyway, since CBSE can ask it at any time. Check your score against the 90 mark pass line on the CTET cut off page, and if you also teach primary classes, the CTET previous papers page covers paper 1 too.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CTET paper 2 previous year question paper enough to pass?

It is a strong tool but not a full plan. Use it with the NCERT books for content and the official pedagogy topics, then use old papers to test what you have learnt.

How many old papers should I solve?

A sound target is eight to ten complete paper 2 sets in the final two months, with section practice before that. Careful analysis of each paper helps far more than piling up numbers.

Are old CTET papers available on the official website?

CBSE publishes notices, answer keys and practice material on ctet.nic.in. What is available changes from session to session, so check the website after each exam.

Does the pattern of old paper 2 sets match the current one?

Recent sessions keep 150 questions, five blocks and no negative marking. Very old sets may differ slightly, so prefer papers from the last few sessions.

Is it worth buying a printed book with every CTET previous year question paper 2 session?

A printed set can save time, but check that the answers agree with the official answer key and that the papers follow the current pattern. Avoid books that only reproduce answers without explanations.

What score in an old paper means I am ready?

If you cross 100 out of 150 in timed old papers several times in a row, you have a comfortable margin over the 90 mark pass line for general candidates.
