The class 9 science syllabus CBSE now follows is built around one NCERT book, Exploration, with 13 chapters grouped into four units: World of Living (27 marks), Matter, Its Nature and Behaviour (25), Motion, Force, Work and Sound (23) and Earth as a System (5). Those add up to the 80 mark theory paper, and your school awards the remaining 20 through internal assessment.
If you have an older sibling's science book at home, put it aside. Several familiar chapters are gone or merged, reproduction has come down from class 10, and there is a brand new Earth science chapter. The table below is the one to study from.

Class 9 science syllabus: marks for each unit
| Unit | Area | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| I | World of Living | 27 |
| II | Matter, Its Nature and Behaviour | 25 |
| III | Motion, Force, Work and Sound | 23 |
| IV | Earth as a System | 5 |
| Theory total | 80 | |
| Internal assessment | 20 | |
Biology is now the heaviest unit, a change from the older pattern where physics and chemistry together dominated. Earth science carries only five marks, but it is entirely new, so give it proper reading time rather than skipping it.
All 13 chapters of the NCERT Exploration book
- Exploration: Entering the World of Secondary Science
- Cell: The Building Block of Life
- Tissues in Action
- Describing Motion Around Us
- Exploring Mixtures and their Separation
- How Forces Affect Motion
- Work, Energy, and Simple Machines
- Journey Inside the Atom
- Atomic Foundations of Matter
- Sound Waves: Characteristics and Applications
- Reproduction: How Life Continues
- Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification
- Earth as a System: Energy, Matter, and Life
The chapters are not printed in unit order. Physics, chemistry and biology chapters alternate through the book, so a quick map helps:
- World of Living: chapters 2, 3, 11 and 12
- Matter: chapters 5, 8 and 9
- Motion, Force, Work and Sound: chapters 4, 6, 7 and 10
- Earth as a System: chapter 13
Chapter 1 is an introduction to how scientists observe, question and test ideas, and its skills are used across the paper.
What changed from the old class 9th science syllabus
Compared with the older 15 chapter book, these are the main shifts reported:
- Added: reproduction (moved down from class 10), diversity and classification of living things, Earth as a system, and an opening chapter on scientific thinking.
- Merged: gravitation now sits inside the forces chapter, and matter in our surroundings is spread across the mixtures and atom chapters.
- Expanded: the work and energy chapter now includes simple machines.
- No longer standalone: health and disease, and improvement in food resources, with related ideas picked up in other chapters.
Key topics chapter by chapter
The lists below follow the chapter titles and the topics these areas have always covered; the exact depth for each is set in the curriculum document.
Living world
- Cell as the basic unit, cell organelles, plant cells versus animal cells
- Plant and animal tissues and how they work together
- Asexual and sexual reproduction in plants and animals
- Classification of organisms and the idea of biodiversity
Matter
- Pure substances and mixtures, solutions, suspensions, colloids, separation methods
- Discovery of electrons, protons and neutrons, atomic models, valency, isotopes
- Atoms, molecules, laws of chemical combination and writing chemical formulae
Motion, force, work and sound
- Distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, graphs of motion
- Newton's laws, momentum, gravitation and weight
- Work, kinetic and potential energy, power, levers and pulleys
- Nature of sound waves, frequency, pitch, echo and uses of ultrasound
Earth as a system
- How energy, matter and living things interact across land, water and air
Internal assessment and the advanced option
The 20 internal marks are given by your school through the year. They usually combine periodic tests, practical and activity work, a portfolio of your notebook and project tasks. Practicals matter more in the new book because many chapters are built around activities you do yourself, such as separating a mixture or tracking how an object moves.
CBSE has also introduced an optional higher level of science for students entering class 9 in this session. Everyone studies the standard course on this page; the advanced level adds harder problems and is assessed later at the class 10 stage. Ask your school whether it offers this track.
A weekly science routine for class 9
Science in class 9 rewards steady effort over last minute cramming, since numericals in motion and atoms build on each other.
- Read each chapter once before the teacher starts it, marking the activities.
- Do every in-text question the same day the topic is taught.
- Keep a separate formula and definition sheet for physics and chemistry.
- Redraw two diagrams a week from memory: cell, tissue types, atomic models, wave patterns.
- Solve the end of chapter exercises before any extra question bank.
Textbook, curriculum file and extra practice
Every school exam question is drawn from the NCERT Exploration textbook, which NCERT makes available online at no cost. The board's academic portal hosts the secondary curriculum document with unit marks, learning outcomes and suggested activities. Exemplar style problems are useful once the textbook is complete, but only after you have finished every exercise in the book. For the full picture of your year, see the CBSE class 9 syllabus overview, and keep the class 9 maths syllabus close by, since motion numericals lean on algebra and graphs.
How class 9 science leads into class 10
Class 10 science builds directly on this year. Atomic structure and chemical formulae lead into chemical reactions, motion and forces support electricity and magnetism, and cell and reproduction chapters connect to life processes and heredity. A strong class 9 base saves you weeks when board preparation starts. When you want a preview of next year, open the CBSE class 10 syllabus; other subjects and boards are gathered in our school boards hub.
Frequently asked questions
Class 9 science NCERT syllabus: how many chapters does it have now?
The new Exploration book has 13 chapters, down from 15 in the older book. They are grouped into four units for marking.
Is the new syllabus of class 9 science only for CBSE schools?
The Exploration book is published by NCERT, so it is used in CBSE schools and in many state board schools that adopt NCERT books. Check with your school which book and syllabus it follows.
Which unit has the biggest share of the 80 marks?
World of Living carries 27 of the 80 theory marks, followed by Matter with 25, Motion, Force, Work and Sound with 23, and Earth as a System with 5.
Is gravitation removed from the 9th science syllabus?
It is not a separate chapter any more, but gravitation and weight are taught inside the chapter on how forces affect motion. Expect questions on it.
Will class 9 science be a board paper?
No. Class 9 science papers are set and checked inside the school, following CBSE's curriculum, marks split and question design.
Why is reproduction in class 9 now?
The new book moved reproduction down from class 10 as part of the curriculum revision. It now sits in the living world unit along with cells, tissues and classification.
