Previous Year Question Paper Class 10: CBSE Board Practice Guide

School boardsAll subjectsMarking schemesUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Sitting any previous year question paper class 10 style, with a clock and no book, prepares you for the board hall like nothing else, since it shows the real length, wording and marking of each subject paper. The board posts its past papers, along with marking schemes, on its main website.

Use them with a plan. Start with recent papers that match the rationalised syllabus, solve each one in three hours, and mark your answers with the official scheme instead of guessing your score. What follows covers each subject's paper, a six week calendar, some self written practice items, and the board's own download sections. Hunting for a 10th previous year question paper, a Hindi one or a set for class 10th in any subject? All of them come from one official source.

What a CBSE class 10 board paper looks like

The main theory papers of class 10 are each worth 80 marks and run for three hours, with 15 minutes of reading time before you start writing. The other 20 marks come from school based internal assessment, so they do not appear in the paper.

  • Maths: five sections, A to E, from one mark objective items up to case studies of 4 marks and long answers of 5 marks.
  • Science: the same range of 1 to 5 mark items, but the latest paper sorts them by subject: biology first, then chemistry, then physics.
  • Social science: four sections, one per book (history, geography, political science, economics), with the map questions placed inside history and geography.
  • English (code 184): unseen reading first, then a letter, a paragraph and grammar, then questions on the two readers.
  • Hindi A and Hindi B: unseen passages, grammar, textbook questions and writing tasks.

In science and social science, keep every answer inside the answer book space marked for its subject. The board has warned that answers placed under another subject's heading go unmarked. For the full chapter lists and marks per unit, open the CBSE class 10 syllabus before you begin.

Patterns in the 2023 to 2025 class 10 board sets

Recent papers share some clear features that are worth knowing before you sit your first practice test:

  • Competency based items are common. Case studies, source passages, data tables and assertion reason questions take a large share of the marks.
  • Internal choice exists in some questions of the longer sections, so read both options before you pick one.
  • Different sets, same design. Each subject is set in several versions for different regions. The questions differ but the marks per section do not.
  • Strict word limits help. Short answers in social science and literature are expected in a set number of words, and the marking schemes reward key points rather than length.

Papers from before the rationalised syllabus may contain chapters you no longer study, so skip those questions.

Class 10 English and Hindi previous year question papers

Language papers are often treated as easy, yet they decide a lot of total marks. Past papers help here in specific ways.

  • English: time the reading section, since long passages slow many students. Use the class 10 English previous year question paper to practise the formal letter and analytical paragraph formats exactly as marked in the scheme.
  • Hindi: for class 10 students every recent Hindi previous year question paper shows how Hindi A grammar items on vachya, pad parichay and alankar are framed. Write the letter or notice tasks in full at least once a week.
Tanvi from Indore wrote long literature answers in English and ran out of time every mock. After marking two past papers with the official scheme, she saw that each 3 mark answer needed only three clear points in about 40 to 50 words. She cut her answers short, finished 20 minutes early in the next paper and used the time to recheck grammar.

A six week practice calendar

Using past papers before the board exam
WeeksWhat to do
1 and 2One paper per subject, with the book closed but no clock. Note weak chapters.
3 and 4Timed papers, three hours each, two or three a week. Mark with the scheme the same day.
5Revise only the chapters where you lost marks, then redo those questions.
6One full paper a day in rotation, at the same hour as the board exam.

Keep an error notebook with three columns: concept not known, step missed, careless slip. By the last week, the third column should be the longest, which means your concepts are in place.

Practice questions in board style

We wrote these short items ourselves to match the board level; they are not copied from any CBSE paper.

  1. Science, 1 mark: Which gas is released when zinc reacts with dilute sulphuric acid? Answer: hydrogen.
  2. Social science, 2 marks: Give two reasons why power sharing is good for democracy. Answer: it reduces conflict between social groups and it gives citizens a say in how they are governed.
  3. English grammar, 1 mark: Report the sentence: She said, "I am tired." Answer: She said that she was tired.
  4. Hindi grammar, 1 mark: "राम द्वारा पत्र लिखा गया" किस वाच्य का उदाहरण है? Answer: कर्मवाच्य.

Official previous year question paper class 10 sources

  • Old board sets: go to cbse.gov.in and open its question paper section, arranged by year and subject with every regional set.
  • Marking schemes: posted on the same website, showing value points and step marks.
  • This session's model paper: the academic portal posts a fresh sample paper with answers each year, mirroring the newest design.
Use the official files wherever possible. Printed collections help with volume, but check the chapter list against the current curriculum, since older questions may come from deleted topics.

Frequently asked questions

Which website has genuine 10th class previous year question paper files?

The board's own site, cbse.gov.in, has them in its question paper section. Marking schemes for the same years are posted there too.

How many old board sets per subject are enough?

Five recent papers per main subject, solved under time and marked with the scheme, is a solid target. Add more for subjects where your score is lowest.

Can papers from before the NCERT cuts still help?

Mostly yes. Skip the questions from deleted chapters, and give more weight to papers from recent years, which follow the current design.

Is the sample paper more important than previous year papers?

Both matter. The sample paper shows this session's design and should be solved first, while previous papers give you many more real questions to practise.

Will I see repeated questions in the class 10 boards?

Exact repeats are uncommon, but the same concepts and question types appear year after year. That is why practising past papers raises your confidence and speed.
