IT syllabus class 10 CBSE in four parts
Every CBSE skill subject follows the same four part plan, and IT 402 is no exception.
| Part | What it covers | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Part A | Employability skills (theory) | 10 |
| Part B | Subject specific skills (theory) | 40 |
| Part C | Practical exam and viva voce | 30 |
| Part D | Project or field visit, and portfolio | 20 |
| Total | 100 | |
Other boards handle computer subjects differently; compare them on our school boards hub. In CBSE, half your marks are earned in the lab, through files you build and a viva, and half in the written board paper.
Part A: employability skills units
- Communication Skills II: 2 marks
- Self Management Skills II: 3 marks
- ICT Skills II: 1 mark
- Entrepreneurial Skills II: 3 marks
- Green Skills II: 1 mark
Part A is where marks come cheapest. The questions are short and drawn closely from the textbook, so one careful reading plus the end of chapter exercises is usually enough.

What changed in Unit 4
If you are using an older guide or a senior's notes, check Unit 4 first. Earlier curricula titled it Web Applications and Security, with topics such as networking and internet security. The current documents title the unit Maintain Healthy, Safe and Secure Working Environment, with chapters on workplace hazards, quality measures and emergencies. The other three units and all the marks stayed the same.
Practical, project and portfolio marks
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Practical task in Writer | 5 |
| Practical task in Calc | 5 |
| Practical task in Base | 10 |
| Viva voce | 10 |
| Project work or field visit | 10 |
| Portfolio or practical file | 10 |
The portfolio needs printouts of at least five solved problems each in Writer, Calc and Base. The project is usually a small real life case where data is entered through a Base form, reported through a Base report and written up in Writer.
Question paper design for the theory exam
The sample paper for the latest session runs for 2 hours and carries 50 marks, with internal choice in almost every block.
- Section A, objective (24 marks): 1 mark items. From employability skills you answer 4 of 6; from subject skills, 20 of 24.
- Section B, subjective (26 marks): 2 mark short answers (3 of 5 from Part A and 4 of 6 from Part B) and 4 mark long answers (3 of 5 from Part B).
Long answers usually ask you to write steps, for example how to create a query in Design View or how to record a macro, so practise writing procedures in order, not just doing them on screen.
A revision plan that follows the marks
- Base first: 12 theory marks and 10 practical marks make databases the heaviest unit. Build two small databases with linked tables, a query, a form and a report.
- Calc next: rehearse Goal Seek, Solver, scenarios and subtotals on one sample marks sheet until you can explain each in four steps.
- Writer and Unit 4: styles and table of contents are short practicals; the safety unit is pure theory, so summarise hazards and their controls on a single sheet.
- Part A in the last week: revise the five employability units from the textbook exercises.
Why IT can protect your class 10 result
IT 402 is usually taken as the optional sixth subject. Under the CBSE scheme of studies, if you fail one of science, mathematics or social science, the skill subject can replace it when your result is computed. That makes steady marks here worth more than they first appear. Confirm this clause in the scheme of studies CBSE issues for your year.
Subjects beyond IT are mapped unit by unit in our CBSE class 10 syllabus breakdown, practise with CBSE class 10 previous papers, and, if computers interest you beyond this year, glance at what the CBSE class 12 syllabus offers. You can read the board's own 402 curriculum document as well.
