CAPF Eligibility for the UPSC Assistant Commandant Exam

Civil servicesGroup A officerMen and womenUpdated 26 Oct 2026

CAPF eligibility for the Assistant Commandant exam is short on paper: a first degree in whatever subject you studied, an age of 20 to 25 counted on the first of August in the exam year, and Indian citizenship. The harder filter comes later, when shortlisted candidates face height and weight checks, a timed running and jumping test and a strict eye examination.

CAPF stands for Central Armed Police Forces. UPSC holds this exam once a year to recruit Group A officers (Assistant Commandants) into five forces: the BSF, the CRPF, the CISF, the ITBP and the SSB. Men and women can both apply.

UPSC CAPF eligibility: the basic conditions

Core rules in the latest CAPF (AC) notice
ConditionWhat the notice asks
NationalityCitizen of India; subjects of Nepal and Bhutan only with the prior consent of the central government
AgeMinimum 20, maximum 25, with the first of August in the exam year as the reference
EducationA degree from any university that has government recognition, or a qualification declared equal to one
GenderOpen to both men and women
DesirableAn NCC B or C certificate, which the interview board takes into account

UPSC prints the window as birth dates: you must be born no earlier than 2 August of one year and no later than 1 August five years after it. That window moves forward by one year each cycle, so copy it from the current notice instead of an old one.

Upsc capf ac eligibility for age relaxation

Upper age relief
CategoryReliefEffective upper limit
SC or STUp to 5 years30
OBC eligible for reservationUp to 3 years28
Civilian central government servants (as defined in the notice)Up to 5 years30
Ex servicemenUp to 5 years30

EWS candidates get no age benefit. Relief for a central government servant who is also SC, ST or OBC can add up in the way the notice describes, so read the exact clause rather than adding numbers yourself.

Degree rules and final year candidates

  • Any stream counts: arts, science, commerce, engineering, law or a professional degree accepted as equivalent.
  • Marks do not matter: even a bare pass in the degree is enough.
  • Students still finishing the degree may sit the written exam. You will have to show proof of passing when UPSC asks for it after the written stage, so a delayed result can cost you the seat.

Sneha writes her BA final papers in May and the CAPF written exam falls in summer. She can apply, but she should keep her provisional certificate ready by the time UPSC calls shortlisted candidates for the physical test and detailed form.

CAPF physical eligibility: height, chest and weight

Measuring starts only after UPSC clears you on the written papers. They are qualifying and do not add marks.

Minimum physical standards
Body measureFor menFor women
Standing height165 cm157 cm
Chest at rest81 cm, plus 5 cm minimum expansionNo chest test
Weight50 kg46 kg

The medical board also checks that weight suits your height and age. Unlike the Sub Inspector exam, the CAPF (AC) notice gives one height bar without separate hill area columns, so check the latest appendix if you were hoping for a regional concession.

Upsc capf physical eligibility: the efficiency test

Physical efficiency test, qualifying
EventMenWomen
100 m race16 seconds18 seconds
800 m race3 min 45 s4 min 45 s
Long jump (three tries)3.5 metres3.0 metres
Shot put of 7.26 kg (three tries)4.5 metresNot part of the test

Note the 800 m. Men must cover it in under four minutes, which is far tighter than most people expect from a desk job routine. A woman found to be 12 or more weeks pregnant is declared temporarily unfit; her vacancy is held and she is tested again after confinement under the rules in the notice.

Arjun runs 800 m in 4 minutes 10 seconds while preparing for Paper II. He needs to shave 25 seconds, so he adds two track sessions a week of 200 m and 400 m repeats from the day he submits the form, not after the written result.

Eyesight and other medical rules

The medical examination follows the physical tests or the interview, as the latest notice sets out. Main eyesight limits in recent notices:

  • Distant vision, corrected: either 6/6 with 6/12, or 6/9 with 6/9, for your two eyes.
  • Near vision, corrected: N6 for the stronger eye and N9 for the weaker.
  • Refractive error: up to minus 4.00 D of myopia or plus 4.00 D of hypermetropia, including cylinder.
  • Colour perception: grade CP III on Ishihara plates.
  • Lasik can be accepted under set conditions, such as surgery done at least six months earlier and stable results.

A carrying angle above 15 degrees for men or 20 degrees for women, ear and nose disorders and several skin conditions can lead to rejection. A review medical board is available if you are declared unfit.

Attempts and documents

There is no cap on attempts. You may write the exam every year until your category's age ceiling runs out.

Keep these originals ready for the physical test and interview: class 10 certificate as age proof, graduation degree or provisional certificate, caste or OBC non creamy layer certificate in the central format, EWS certificate if claimed, NCC certificates, discharge book or service certificate for ex servicemen, and a no objection letter if you are a government employee.

UPSC can change the order of the medical test, the documents asked or the date for degree proof between cycles. Treat the latest CAPF (AC) notice on the UPSC website as final.

Where to go from here

Paper I, Paper II and the interview are broken down on the UPSC CAPF syllabus page. If you also want a Sub Inspector option in the same forces, compare SSC CPO eligibility, where the age band is similar but the height bar is higher. Other UPSC exams sit on the civil services hub, and Air Force officer entry is covered in AFCAT eligibility.
