To meet SSC JE eligibility you clear three filters: Indian nationality (or one of a few listed groups), an age of 18 or more and not above 30 or 32 depending on the department, and hold the exact diploma or degree that department asks for. There is no single rule for every post, so the department you pick decides which limits apply to you.
Many aspirants assume any engineering diploma works everywhere. It does not. Some offices want a degree, some accept a three year diploma only with two years of work, and a couple of the newer posts need a degree in specific streams. The tables below break the latest notice down post by post so you can see where you stand before paying the fee.

SSC JE eligibility at a glance
The Junior Engineer exam fills posts in more than a dozen central offices at once. Each office sends SSC its own recruitment rules, which is why the notice carries a long table instead of one line. Before anything else, settle these points:
- Nationality: Holding Indian citizenship is the simple route. Subjects of Bhutan or Nepal, Tibetans who arrived before 1 January 1962 meaning to stay for good, and Indian origin migrants who relocated for good from the countries named in the notice may also apply, provided the Centre issues them a certificate of eligibility.
- Age: at least 18, with the ceiling set by the department.
- Education: the branch and level (diploma or degree) named against that post.
- Experience: only for certain posts where a diploma is accepted in place of a degree.
Since you choose your preferred departments in the form, you only need to satisfy the rules of the posts you actually select.
Upper age limit by department
| Upper limit | Departments |
|---|---|
| 32 years | Central Public Works Department (civil and electrical), Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (civil and electrical) |
| 30 years | Border Roads Organisation, Brahmaputra Board, Central Water Commission, Central Water and Power Research Station, DGQA (Naval), Farakka Barrage Project, Military Engineer Services, NTRO, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Department of Telecommunications (JE Telecom), India Meteorological Department (Scientific Assistant) |
Age is reckoned on 1 August as fixed in the latest notice, and the notice turns this into a date of birth window for each limit. The birth date on your Class 10 certificate is the one SSC accepts; later changes are not entertained.
Age relaxation for reserved categories
| Group | Added to the ceiling |
|---|---|
| Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes | 5 years |
| Other Backward Classes | 3 years |
| Persons with benchmark disability (general or EWS) | 10 years |
| Persons with benchmark disability who are OBC | 13 years |
| Persons with benchmark disability who are SC or ST | 15 years |
| Former armed forces members | 3 years, counted once their service period is subtracted from their age |
| Soldiers disabled during operations (general, EWS, OBC) | 3 years |
| Soldiers disabled during operations (SC, ST) | 8 years |
So an OBC candidate applying to CPWD can be up to 35, and an SC candidate for a 30 year post up to 35 as well. The EWS group alone receives no extra years. Departmental employees and a few special groups have separate rules in the notice; read those clauses carefully if they cover you.
SSC JE qualification eligibility by post
This is where most forms go wrong. The qualification is tied to the post, not just to the exam.
| Post and department | What you need |
|---|---|
| JE Civil, CPWD | Diploma in civil engineering |
| JE Electrical, CPWD | Diploma in electrical or mechanical engineering |
| JE Civil or Mechanical, Central Water Commission | Degree or diploma in the same branch |
| JE Civil, Brahmaputra Board | Three year diploma in civil engineering |
| JE Civil or Electrical, CWPRS and Farakka Barrage | Diploma in the same branch |
| JE Civil, NTRO | Diploma in civil engineering |
| JE Civil and JE E and M, BRO and MES | Degree in the branch, or a three year diploma plus 2 years of relevant work |
| JE Electrical or Mechanical, DGQA (Naval) | Degree, or a three year diploma plus 2 years of relevant work |
| JE Civil or Electrical, Lighthouses directorate | Degree, or a diploma plus 3 years of experience |
| JE Civil, Fisheries ministry | Degree or three year diploma in civil engineering |
| JE Telecom, Department of Telecommunications | BE or BTech in electrical, electronics, electrical communication, computer science, telecom, IT or instrumentation |
| Scientific Assistant, IMD | BSc with physics, or a bachelor's in a listed computer, electronics or communication stream (with physics and maths in Class 12) |
The IMD qualification was revised by an addendum after the notice came out, so read the addendum on the SSC site before you rely on the summary above.
SSC JE exam eligibility for final year students and experience rules
You must hold the qualification by the closing date for applications. A result shown as under processing does not count, and SSC asks for proof at document verification. If your final semester marks arrive after that deadline, you will have to wait for the next round.
Where a post asks for experience, it must be gained after you earned the qualifying diploma. Internships, training and project work done during the course do not count. Keep a certificate from each employer that shows dates, the nature of work (planning, execution or maintenance of engineering works) and your role.
Extra conditions for Border Roads posts
Junior Engineer posts in the Border Roads Organisation are open only to men, and selected candidates must clear physical and medical standards set by BRO, since the work is in remote and high altitude areas. The notice gives the exact measurements; check the latest notification for those figures rather than relying on older lists. Other departments do not have a physical test for JE, though a medical check is part of joining.
Paperwork SSC will ask to see
- Matriculation certificate, which SSC treats as proof of birth date
- Your engineering diploma or degree along with semester marks, showing when the final result was announced
- Experience certificates, if your chosen post needs them
- Caste, EWS or PwBD certificate in the format SSC prescribes, issued within the allowed period
- Ex servicemen discharge papers, where relevant
- A valid photo ID; Aadhaar based verification on the new SSC portal makes the process smoother
The application fee is 100 rupees, and nothing is charged to women, SC and ST applicants, persons with disabilities or former armed forces members.
Next steps after checking your eligibility
Once you know which posts you qualify for, plan your study around the two papers: Paper 1 only qualifies you, while Paper 2 decides merit. Every subject and topic is listed on the SSC JE syllabus page, while the SSC JE cut off guide shows how high the bar went in past rounds. Engineers with a diploma often also look at railway posts; compare the rules on RRB JE eligibility. For other central jobs, browse the SSC exams hub or test several exams at once on the eligibility checker.
Frequently asked questions
What is the SSC JE age bracket?
The floor is 18. The ceiling is 30 for most departments and 32 for CPWD and the Lighthouses directorate, counted on 1 August in the latest notice. Reserved groups add their relaxation years to that ceiling.
Is a diploma enough for SSC JE?
Yes. CPWD, CWC, Farakka Barrage, CWPRS, NTRO and several others accept a diploma. BRO, MES and DGQA (Naval) want a degree, or a diploma plus 2 years of work. JE Telecom needs a degree.
Is BTech enough for SSC JE posts that ask for a diploma?
A degree in the same branch is generally accepted as a higher qualification for diploma posts. If you have any doubt about a particular department, read its row in the notice and the general clause on higher qualifications.
Can women apply for SSC JE?
Yes, for every department except the Border Roads Organisation, whose JE posts are for men only. Women are also exempt from the application fee.
Can I apply in the final year of my diploma?
Only when your final result is out on or before the last day for applying. A pending or under processing result is not accepted.
Does SSC cap the number of JE attempts?
The notice does not set a separate cap on attempts. Each cycle you only need to fit the age ceiling of the departments you select.
