SSC CGL Previous Year Question Paper Guide for Tier 1 and Tier 2

SSC and centralTier 1 and Tier 2Hindi and EnglishUpdated 26 Oct 2026

Treat every SSC CGL previous year question paper as a rehearsal of the real exam, because the Commission sticks closely to the same question styles shift after shift. Practising with past Tier 1 and Tier 2 sets shows you which chapters keep returning, what pace each section demands, and where negative marking is hurting you.

Here you will find what each paper looks like, the topic patterns seen in past papers, a practice routine, five sample questions written in the CGL style, and where the Commission itself posts papers and answer keys.

What a CGL paper looks like

Tier 1 hands you four blocks of 25 questions (reasoning, GA, quant and English), 2 marks apiece, with a 0.50 deduction for every wrong answer. Tier 2 Paper I is longer: 30 maths and 30 reasoning questions in one hour, 45 English and 25 GA questions in the next hour, then 20 computer questions in 15 minutes. Each of those carries 3 marks with a 1 mark penalty. A separate session holds the 15 minute typing test. Candidates for statistics posts also sit Paper II, and audit and accounts candidates sit Paper III, each with 100 questions in two hours.

Since Tier 1 runs in dozens of shifts, a single cycle produces many separate papers. That gives you a large bank to practise from. For topic lists of every section, read the SSC CGL syllabus.

Patterns seen in past Tier 1 papers

Approximate questions per topic in a Tier 1 section (based on a published count of past papers)
SectionMost frequent topics
QuantData interpretation (about 5); mensuration, trigonometry, number system (2 or 3 each)
ReasoningCoding and decoding (3 or 4); analogy, series, mathematical operations, seating (2 or 3 each)
EnglishPassages with questions (about 5); error detection, rearrangement, voice, one word substitution (2 or 3 each)
General AwarenessMixed static and science facts (10 to 12); current affairs (3 to 5)

Two further trends stand out. Quant questions have moved towards application, so formula recall alone is not enough. GA has drawn more from recent events, while static history and polity remain at about two questions each. Your own count across ten shifts will tell you more than any chart.

What Tier 2 papers add

A ssc cgl tier 2 previous year question paper tests stamina as much as knowledge. Section I mixes harder geometry and algebra with long reasoning puzzles, and the 1 mark penalty means a poor guess costs a third of a correct answer. In Section II, English carries 135 marks on its own, with several comprehension passages and cloze tests. The computer module repeats basics such as shortcuts, memory units and spreadsheet functions, so old ssc cgl mains previous year paper sets are a quick way to learn its style.

A routine for using an SSC CGL previous year question paper

  1. Diagnose: sit one full Tier 1 paper before you start serious study. Your section scores show where to begin.
  2. Chapter drills: once you finish a chapter, solve every past question on it from at least ten shifts.
  3. Full timed papers: from two months before Tier 1, take three full papers a week in one sitting of 60 minutes.
  4. Review longer than you solve: spend at least 60 minutes analysing each paper. Sort mistakes into concept, calculation, reading and guess errors.
  5. Tier 2 rehearsal: after Tier 1, practise the two one hour sections back to back, then the computer module, then 15 minutes of typing.
Sana attempts 88 of 100 questions in her mocks but loses about 12 marks to wrong answers. Reviewing five past papers, she finds most mistakes are in seating puzzles and geometry questions she attempts in a hurry. She now skips those on the first pass and comes back with the time left, and her net score rises even though she attempts fewer.

Five sample questions in the CGL style

We composed this set ourselves; it follows CGL formats but borrows nothing from an actual shift.

  1. Reasoning: If CAMEL is coded as DBNFM, how is HORSE coded?
  2. Quant: A shopkeeper marks an item 40% above cost and gives a discount of 25%. What is the profit percentage?
  3. English: Select the synonym of the word FRUGAL from these options: (a) wasteful (b) economical (c) angry (d) generous
  4. General Awareness: Which Article of the Constitution deals with the Finance Commission?
  5. Computer: Which shortcut key selects all content in a document?

Answers: 1. IPSTF 2. 5% 3. (b) economical 4. Article 280 5. Ctrl + A

Where to get CGL papers and keys officially

After each tier, the Commission posts the tentative answer key on the SSC website along with candidates' question papers and response sheets. These stay open only for a limited window, during which you can also raise objections. Download your own paper and, if possible, papers from other shifts while the window is open.

The Commission does not keep a permanent archive of every CGL shift. Printed collections are fine for practice, but check that their answers match the final official key, and be careful with sites that ask for payment or personal details.

Apart from the English section, each paper is printed in two languages. The Hindi side of an ssc cgl previous year question paper is therefore identical in content to the English side. Plenty of readers hunt for a printed collection (the ssc cgl previous year question paper book that many shops stock), or a solution set for each ssc cgl exam previous year question paper; such material helps only if you study the working, not just the final option.

Once you know your mock range, compare it with the SSC CGL cut off explanation and confirm your post choices on the eligibility page.

Frequently asked questions

What number of past CGL papers is enough?

Plan on 25 to 30 complete Tier 1 shift papers, plus topic wise practice from many more. For Tier 2, solve every available Paper I set from recent cycles.

Can I practise CGL papers in Hindi?

You can. All sections other than English appear in Hindi too, so one download covers both languages.

Does SSC repeat questions in CGL?

Word for word repeats are unusual. Formats, concepts and even number patterns come back regularly, which is why old shifts mirror the exam so well.

Should I solve the ssc cgl tier 1 previous year paper before finishing the syllabus?

Solve one early to diagnose your level, then use past questions chapter by chapter as you study. Keep full timed papers for the last two months.

Is the ssc cgl english previous year paper useful for Tier 2?

Yes. Tier 1 English covers the same areas, but Tier 2 has 45 questions with longer passages, so add Tier 2 sets once your basics are strong.

Where can I check the official answer key?

On the official SSC website, in the answer key section for CGL, shortly after each tier. The window is short, so save your response sheet when it opens.
