The SBI CBO syllabus covers four objective sections (English Language, Banking Knowledge, General Awareness with Economy, and Computer Aptitude) worth 120 marks in 2 hours, followed straight away by a 30 minute descriptive English test worth 50 marks. Shortlisted candidates then face experience screening, a 50 mark interview and, where needed, a local language proficiency test.
Circle Based Officer recruitment is meant for bankers who already have at least two years of officer experience, so the paper leans on what you do at work every day. Below you will find the SBI CBO exam pattern, what every CBO section asks about, and a weekly routine that suits a full time banking job.

Stages in the CBO selection process
- Online test: an objective paper and a descriptive paper taken in one sitting. The bank prepares separate lists for each state and category using your total objective marks.
- Screening: about three times the number of vacancies, from the top of each list, have their experience and documents checked by a committee of the bank.
- Interview: 50 marks. You must clear the minimum score the bank fixes.
- Local language proficiency test: applies when your 10th or 12th certificate does not show that you studied the language of your chosen state.
Reports on recent recruitment describe the final merit as the online test and interview combined in a 75 to 25 ratio. Treat that split as indicative until your own CBO advertisement confirms it.
SBI CBO exam pattern in one table
| Test | Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Objective | English Language | 30 | 30 | 30 minutes |
| Banking Knowledge | 40 | 40 | 40 minutes | |
| General Awareness / Economy | 30 | 30 | 30 minutes | |
| Computer Aptitude | 20 | 20 | 20 minutes | |
| Descriptive | English (letter and essay) | 2 | 50 | 30 minutes |
Every objective block runs on a separate timer, and minutes left over in one cannot be carried to the next. The bank does not set sectional cut offs; only an aggregate minimum applies. Since recent CBO advertisements carry no penalty clause, a blank answer is simply a lost mark, so guess smartly. The descriptive paper gets marked only for those who cross the objective cut off.
Banking Knowledge: the 40 mark section
This is the heaviest section and the one where your job experience pays off. Expect questions on:
- Types of banks, the RBI and its functions, Banking Regulation Act basics
- Deposit and loan products, KYC and anti money laundering norms
- Priority sector lending, MSME and agriculture credit, government schemes run through banks
- Non performing assets, income recognition and provisioning, SARFAESI and recovery channels
- Basel norms, capital adequacy, CRR, SLR and liquidity measures
- Payment systems such as NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, UPI and cheque clearing
- Negotiable instruments, bank and customer relationship, ombudsman scheme
- Risk management, credit appraisal basics and financial inclusion
Questions are factual and often linked to recent circulars, so reading the RBI master directions you already use at your branch is a smart way to revise.
General Awareness, Economy and Computer Aptitude
General Awareness / Economy (30 marks)
- Banking and finance headlines from about the six to eight months before the test, with weight to banking and finance news
- Indian economy: GDP, inflation, fiscal deficit, Union Budget highlights, monetary policy decisions
- Financial bodies such as SEBI, IRDAI, NABARD, SIDBI and international bodies like the IMF and World Bank
- Government schemes, awards, appointments and important days
Computer Aptitude (20 marks)
- CPU, RAM and ROM, storage units, peripherals and system versus application programs
- Operating systems, documents, spreadsheets and presentation software
- Networking, internet terms and email
- Cyber security, malware types and safe banking practices
- Database basics and core banking related computing terms
English section and the descriptive paper
The 30 mark English section usually blends comprehension passages with cloze items, faulty sentence detection, phrase replacement, jumbled sentences and words used in context. Since it has only 30 minutes, reading speed decides your score more than grammar alone.
The descriptive test asks for one letter and one essay, typed on the computer. Letters are often formal, such as a complaint, a request to a branch head or a reply to a customer. Essays tend to pick banking, economy or social themes like digital payments, financial inclusion or rural credit. Keep a clear structure: an opening that states the point, two or three body paragraphs with examples from your work, and a short close.
Where the SBI CBO syllabus gives the most marks
Banking Knowledge alone gives one third of the objective marks, so start there. English and general awareness come next with 30 marks each, while computer aptitude is short and fairly predictable.
In the last three weeks, take timed full mocks with sectional clocks. Track which section leaves you short of time and adjust your reading order within it.
Eligibility in short
You need a graduation degree in any subject, or a recognised equivalent like engineering, medicine, CA or cost accountancy, and at least two years of experience as an officer in a scheduled commercial bank or a regional rural bank, counted after your degree. On the age reference date given in the advertisement a CBO applicant needs to be 21 or older and 30 or younger, while candidates from reserved groups add whatever age concession is listed in that advertisement.
You also need knowledge of the local language of your circle. For other SBI entries, compare the SBI PO syllabus, the SBI clerk syllabus and the overview on our SBI syllabus page, or browse all bank exams.
Frequently asked questions
Does the SBI CBO objective paper carry negative marks?
According to the recent advertisements, a wrong objective answer costs you nothing. Go by the CBO advertisement of your year, since the bank can change this rule.
Can a fresher apply for SBI CBO?
No. You need at least two years of experience as an officer in a scheduled commercial bank or a regional rural bank, counted after your graduation. Clerical experience does not count.
Is the CBO descriptive test written on paper?
No, you type both answers on the computer right after the objective test. It carries 50 marks and lasts 30 minutes.
Are there sectional cut offs in the CBO online test?
No sectional cut offs are mentioned in recent CBO advertisements. Only an aggregate minimum, fixed by the bank, is applied before shortlisting.
What happens in the local language test?
It confirms your working command of the language of your chosen state. You are exempt if your 10th or 12th mark sheet shows that language as a subject.
How is the SBI CBO exam syllabus different from SBI PO?
PO tests reasoning and quantitative aptitude for fresh graduates, while CBO drops these and adds a full 40 mark banking knowledge section for experienced officers. CBO also has screening of experience before the interview.
