RBI assistant previous year paper: a practical guide

BankingGraduate levelPrelims and mainsUpdated 26 Oct 2026

An RBI assistant previous year paper tells you something no syllabus can: how the Reserve Bank's own exam feels at full speed, with five separately timed tests in mains and a general awareness section that leans on central banking. Recruitment rounds are not held every year, so the few papers that exist are worth studying closely.

Here you will find the current paper format, what the 2023 mains reportedly contained, a routine for using old papers, several practice questions we composed, and where RBI posts official information.

The format to time yourself against

The latest RBI notification kept the structure used in recent rounds:

RBI assistant online papers
StageTests and timingTotal
PrelimsEnglish 30 questions, numerical ability 35, reasoning 35; 20 minutes for each test100 marks, 1 hour
MainsReasoning 30 min, English 30 min, numerical ability 30 min, general awareness 25 min, computer knowledge 20 min; 40 questions in each200 marks, 2 hours 15 minutes

You must clear every test separately as well as the overall mark, and only mains marks decide the merit list. Topics for each test are listed in the RBI assistant syllabus guide.

RBI can alter tests, timings or the sectional rules in any round. Hold each old paper up against the exam scheme RBI prints for your round.

What an RBI assistant mains previous year paper looked like

The 2023 mains, held on 31 December, was rated easy to moderate in candidate based analyses. One shift was reported roughly as follows:

  • Reasoning: three big puzzles of about seven questions each (a floor and flat set, a comparison set and one with an unknown number of people), then input and output, data sufficiency, syllogism and a short alphanumeric series.
  • Numerical ability: three data sets of five questions each (table, pie chart and caselet), six or seven approximation items, four or five quantity comparisons and a small arithmetic block.
  • English: two passages adding up to about 15 questions, an eight question cloze test, plus error detection, sentence rearrangement and phrase replacement.
  • General awareness: events from November and December, just ahead of the paper, RBI digital initiatives, awards, sports and schemes.
  • Computer knowledge: processors, shortcuts, word processing, internet protocols and computer generations. Candidates found this the hardest test of the day.
RBI does not publish an answer key for this exam, so these figures come from memory based reports and are approximate.

Prelims lessons from an RBI assistant previous year paper

The RBI assistant prelims previous year paper follows the familiar three test layout seen across clerical bank exams, but with a central bank flavour in the passages and far fewer seats than the IBPS rounds. The lesson from past rounds is that sectional minimums knock out more people than the overall mark. A strong reasoning score cannot rescue an English test that falls below its floor.

Use old prelims papers to fix a personal order: many candidates start numerical ability with simplification and approximation, then move to the data set they can read fastest. In reasoning, short blocks such as inequality and syllogism come first, and the largest puzzle last.

How to work through old RBI papers

  1. Mains first in your planning: because only mains marks count, give at least half your practice time to the five mains tests, even before prelims.
  2. Awareness with a central bank lens: after each old paper, list every awareness question linked to RBI, payments or monetary policy. That list becomes your revision map for the next round.
  3. Computer as a daily habit: give 20 minutes each day to fundamentals, shortcuts and networking, since past papers show this test can surprise you.
  4. Strict clocks: 25 minutes for 40 awareness questions means about 37 seconds each. Practise exactly that pace.
Farhan, a commerce graduate in Lucknow, prepares around a job at an accounts firm. On weekdays he solves one mains test from an old paper during his lunch hour. Saturday evenings go to a full 135 minute mock, and Sunday mornings to checking every awareness question against RBI press releases. After a month he could finish computer knowledge in 15 minutes with only two errors.

Practice items in the RBI assistant style

We drafted these to resemble the question types above. Nothing here is lifted from an actual exam.

  1. Quantity comparison: Quantity I: simple interest on Rs 8,000 at 10% a year for 2 years. Quantity II: Rs 1,650. Solution: I is Rs 1,600, so Quantity II is greater.
  2. Approximation: 24.98% of 801.2 + 14.03 x 9.97 = ? Solution: about 200 + 140 = 340.
  3. Banking awareness: Which policy rate is the one at which RBI lends overnight to banks against government securities? Solution: the repo rate.
  4. English, phrase replacement: "Hardly had the meeting begun when the lights went out." Is the pairing "hardly had ... when" correct, or should it be replaced? Solution: yes, "hardly ... when" is the correct pairing.

Official sources for RBI assistant papers

RBI posts its recruitment notices, call letters, information handouts and results on opportunities.rbi.org.in. It does not usually publish the full question papers. Whatever previous year question paper of RBI assistant turns up online, including sets labelled as an RBI assistant exam previous year question paper, has been rebuilt from what candidates recalled, so read the official handout for rules and use the reconstructions only for question styles.

Other papers that build the same skills

The prelims of RBI assistant overlaps heavily with the clerical bank exams, so IBPS clerk previous papers and SBI clerk previous papers give you plenty of extra sets for English, reasoning and maths. Frequently asked questions

Does RBI release previous year papers for the assistant exam?

RBI generally does not publish full assistant papers or answer keys. It releases notices, information handouts and results, while the papers in circulation are memory based.

Why are there so few RBI assistant papers to practise?

The Reserve Bank does not recruit assistants every year, so there are fewer rounds than for IBPS exams. Add clerical bank papers to your practice to make up the gap.

Do prelims marks count towards selection?

No. The first stage simply filters who sits mains. Ranking uses the mains score, subject to clearing the language proficiency test.

Which mains test did candidates find toughest in 2023?

Reports of the 31 December mains rated computer knowledge as hard, while English and reasoning were easier. This can change in any round.

How long is the RBI assistant mains?

Two hours and fifteen minutes for 200 questions, split into five tests that are timed one by one. Every test has 40 questions worth one mark each.
