OUAT Syllabus and Exam Pattern for UG Admission

Entrance12th levelPCB or PCMUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The OUAT syllabus for the undergraduate entrance is drawn from Class 11 and 12 science: physics and chemistry for everyone, with a third paper of biology or mathematics that follows the course group you pick. The test is a two hour computer based paper of 200 multiple choice questions, one mark each, with no negative marking.

Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology in Bhubaneswar uses this common entrance to fill seats in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, fisheries, veterinary science, agricultural engineering and community science. This page covers the paper layout, the chapters behind each section and a short plan for the gap between boards and the entrance.

What the OUAT entrance decides

OUAT runs its own common entrance for its bachelor's programmes. Your score and rank decide which course and college you can choose at counselling. B.V.Sc and A.H. and B.F.Sc need the biology group, B.Tech in agricultural engineering needs the mathematics group, and the B.Sc (Hons) courses in agriculture, horticulture, forestry and community science accept either, as recent prospectuses describe.

You pick the group when you fill the first application form, and recent forms did not let you change it afterwards. Choose with care: a PCM student who also hopes for veterinary science cannot take that seat through the maths group.

Under the OUAT marking scheme a right response earns 1 mark, while a wrong or blank response earns 0. Two hours for 200 items leaves roughly 36 seconds apiece, so speed matters more than in most state entrances. Results have been released as a score followed by a rank card.

The subject split shown above is how recent cycles were reported. OUAT can change the mode, the split or the marking rules, so read the prospectus for your year on the official OUAT website before you plan.

Physics chapters in the OUAT syllabus

The OUAT exam syllabus for physics follows the Class 11 and 12 course of CHSE Odisha and the NCERT books.

  • Mechanics: measurement and errors, kinematics, Newton's laws, energy and momentum, circular and rotational motion, gravity
  • Matter and heat: elasticity, fluid pressure and viscosity, thermal expansion, heat transfer, laws of thermodynamics, gas behaviour
  • Vibrations: simple harmonic motion, sound and other waves
  • Electric and magnetic effects: Coulomb's law and fields, capacitance, resistance networks, field around a wire carrying current, bar magnets, induction, AC circuits, EM waves
  • Light: reflection and refraction, the eye, microscope and telescope, Young's double slit
  • Modern physics: photons and electrons, Bohr's model, nuclear decay, p-n junctions and logic gates

Chemistry within the OUAT exam syllabus

  • Physical: mole calculations, quantum numbers and orbitals, gas laws, enthalpy and entropy, Le Chatelier and pH, solution properties, cells and electrolysis, reaction rates, adsorption and colloids
  • Inorganic: periodic trends, bonding and molecular shape, oxidation and reduction, hydrogen and its compounds, the main group and transition elements, complexes, extraction of metals
  • Organic: IUPAC naming and reaction basics, alkanes to arenes, halogen compounds, compounds with oxygen (alcohol to carboxylic acid), amines and diazonium salts, sugars, amino acids, plastics and fibres, drugs and soaps

Chemistry is shared by both groups and has more fact based questions than physics, so it is often the fastest section to score in.

Biology and mathematics for the third section

Biology (PCB group)

  • Classification of plants and animals, with key features of each group
  • The cell, mitosis and meiosis, and the chemistry of life
  • How plants absorb water, make food, respire and grow
  • Human body systems from digestion to the endocrine glands
  • Pollination, fertilisation and seeds; the human reproductive system and its health
  • Mendel's laws, DNA replication and the genetic code, theories of evolution
  • Disease, immunity, useful microbes and the tools of biotechnology
  • Food chains, population traits, energy flow, protecting species and habitats

Mathematics (PCM group)

  • Algebra: set notation, mappings, the number i, roots of quadratics, AP and GP, permutation problems, the binomial expansion, matrices, determinants
  • Trigonometry: ratios, identities, equations and inverse functions
  • Geometry: slope and distance, the circle and the three conics, vector products, direction cosines in 3D
  • Calculus: continuity, rates of change, maxima and minima, definite and indefinite integration, first order differential equations
  • Data and chance: measures of spread, probability, linear programming problems

Preparing in the weeks after boards

The entrance falls a few weeks after Class 12 exams, so your board study already covers most of the ground. The change you need is speed.

  1. First two weeks: revise formulas and NCERT summary points for physics and chemistry, one chapter per sitting.
  2. Next two weeks: the third section, with diagrams and terms for biology or short methods for calculus and coordinate geometry.
  3. Final stretch: short timed blocks, say 50 items against a 30 minute clock, then full 200 question mocks in two hours.
Subhashree from Cuttack scored well in her CHSE practicals but was slow in physics numericals. Since no marks are cut for errors, she learnt to mark her best guess on long problems, flag them and move on. In mocks, that habit alone lifted her attempts from about 170 to all 200.

Students targeting national agriculture seats may also prepare for CUET, and medical aspirants will find most of the PCB portion overlaps with the NEET syllabus.

Books that fit the OUAT exam syllabus

Your base should be the NCERT Class 11 and 12 books for each subject you will face. CHSE Odisha textbooks add useful local examples in biology. For practice, use the question bank at the end of each NCERT chapter and any official past papers OUAT shares. Fact recall decides many biology and chemistry questions, so short revision notes beat thick guides in the last month.

Frequently asked questions

Will a wrong answer lower my OUAT score?

Not in recent cycles. Errors are simply scored as zero, so attempt every question. Confirm this in the prospectus for your year.

Which board syllabus does OUAT follow?

Questions are set at Class 12 level, broadly matching the CHSE Odisha and NCERT courses. Students from CBSE or other boards are equally eligible.

Can I take both biology and mathematics?

No. You choose one group, PCB or PCM, while applying. The third section of your paper is then either biology or mathematics.

How long is the OUAT exam?

The paper lasts two hours for 200 questions, with no separate time limit for each subject, which lets you jump between subjects as you like.

Does OUAT hold a postgraduate entrance too?

Yes. OUAT also runs entrance tests for its master's and doctoral programmes, with subject papers based on the relevant bachelor's degree. Their pattern is given in the PG prospectus.

What minimum marks in Class 12 do I need?

The prospectus sets a minimum aggregate in Class 12 science, with a lower bar for reserved categories. The exact percentage and subject rules can change, so check the current prospectus.
