The OTET syllabus is spread over two separate papers, each carrying 150 marks from 150 objective items: Paper I is the primary teacher paper (classes 1 to 5) with child development, a first language, English, mathematics and EVS, while Paper II serves classes 6 to 8 and keeps the first three blocks but swaps in a 60 mark subject block, science with maths or else social studies. You get two and a half hours per paper, and the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha prescribes a fixed split of content and teaching method questions in most sections.
Below you get the OTET exam pattern in tables, the topic lists for every section, pass marks and a ten week schedule built on the board's own split. If you only need the upper primary paper in depth, see the OTET Paper 2 syllabus.

What the Odisha TET qualifies you for
OTET is the Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test for elementary schools. It is a qualifying test: clearing it lets you compete whenever Odisha hires elementary teachers, and the government decides from time to time how much weight OTET marks carry in recruitment. Secondary school teachers take a different test, the OSSTET.
- Paper I: the primary level paper, set at a difficulty that can reach secondary standard.
- Paper II: the upper primary paper, whose items can go up to senior secondary standard.
Answer sheets list four alternatives per item, and you shade a single bubble. The board publishes a scoring key after the exam and accepts online objections within a set window.

Every subject section also has a pedagogy group on its own teaching methods, approaches and assessment, which makes up a third of that section.
Pass marks and how OTET scores are used
You need 60% or more, that is 90 out of 150, as a general candidate. SC, ST, SEBC and differently abled candidates need 50%, that is 75. Since recent sessions deducted nothing for errors, answer every item even when unsure.
Study plan for the OTET exam
The fixed 20 plus 10 split is your best guide. In each subject or language block, a third of the marks come from pedagogy, so do not leave teaching methods for the end.
- Weeks 1 to 3: CDP theories and inclusive education, with one Odisha classroom example for each.
- Weeks 4 to 6: Odisha state board textbooks for classes 1 to 8 in maths, science, EVS and social studies, focusing on Odisha history and geography.
- Weeks 7 and 8: grammar and unseen passages in Odia (or your Language I) and English, plus the writers list for Paper II.
- Weeks 9 and 10: a pair of timed mock tests each week, then revise the pedagogy groups you scored lowest in.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions does OTET have?
You face 150 objective items per paper, every item worth a single mark. Someone sitting both papers therefore answers 300 items, split over a morning and an afternoon shift.
Is there negative marking in OTET?
Recent sessions had no negative marking, so a wrong answer simply scores zero. Confirm the rule in the notification for your session.
What score clears OTET?
General candidates need 60% (90 marks). SC, ST, SEBC and differently abled candidates need 50% (75 marks).
Which languages can I choose in OTET?
Language I can be Odia, Urdu, Hindi, Telugu or Bengali. Language II is English for every candidate.
Is the OTET syllabus the same as CTET?
The structure is close to CTET, but the content leans on Odisha. EVS and social studies include Odisha's geography, history and freedom struggle, and Paper II Language I asks about writers of that language.
Can I take both OTET papers?
Yes. Hold the training qualification that each level demands and you can register for both; the board schedules them in separate shifts.
