The NICL assistant syllabus runs over two online exams: a 60 minute prelims with 100 items split across English, reasoning and numerical ability, then a 120 minute mains with 200 items in which GA and computers join the three aptitude tests, and after that a regional language test. National Insurance Company Limited, the government owned non-life insurer headquartered in Kolkata, fills these Class III posts separately for each state, and there is no interview.
Only the mains score builds your final position, so the two extra mains subjects matter a great deal. General awareness here leans towards insurance and finance, and the computer section rewards a few weeks of steady reading. This guide gives the NICL assistant exam pattern for both phases, topics under each test, how the language test works, and a timetable for the few weeks that usually separate the two phases. Past qualifying marks are on the NICL assistant cut off page.

How NICL assistant selection works
- Phase I, prelims: an online screening test. A minimum in every section and overall gets you through to Phase II. These marks are not added later.
- Phase II, mains: five online tests. This is the score that ranks you.
- Regional language test: held for those provisionally selected. The board checks your reading, writing and conversation in that state's official tongue. It carries no marks, but failing it cancels your selection.
- Document verification and pre-employment medical complete the process.
Only one state can be picked on the form, and every state has its own seat count, so the competition you face depends on the state you pick.
NICL assistant exam pattern for prelims
| Prelims section | Items | Max marks | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 min |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 min |
| Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 min |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 min |
Every section locks after its 20 minutes, so minutes saved in English do not roll over to the maths block. That makes sectional speed practice more useful than long full length tests in the early weeks.
NICL assistant mains exam pattern: five tests in two hours
| Mains section | Items | Max marks | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 30 min |
| Test of English Language | 40 | 40 | 30 min |
| Test of Numerical Ability | 40 | 40 | 30 min |
| Test of General Awareness | 40 | 40 | 15 min |
| Test of Computer Knowledge | 40 | 40 | 15 min |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 120 min |
General awareness and computer knowledge give you 80 marks in just 30 minutes. They are recall based, so a candidate who has revised well can finish them quickly and with high accuracy, while the three aptitude tests take the bulk of the clock.

A study plan for the prelims to mains gap
The time between the two phases is usually short, so do not leave the mains only subjects until your prelims result.
- Months 1 and 2: daily sectional drills of 20 minutes each in English, reasoning and maths. Read 30 minutes of insurance and banking news.
- Month 3: two prelims mocks a week, plus one computer chapter every two days.
- After prelims: full 120 minute mains mocks, with GA and computer revision notes read every night.
Eligibility and the language test
A bachelor's degree in any stream, or one treated as equal to it, is all the schooling rule asks. On age, the most recent advertisement allowed 21 to 30, and the upper end moved up by five for SC and ST, by three for the OBC group outside the creamy layer and by ten for a benchmark disability; the notice lists further categories.
Think about the language test when you pick your state. If you studied that language in Class 10 or 12, the notice may allow the mark sheet as proof; check the exemption rule for your cycle. Similar clerical posts in banks are covered in the IBPS clerk syllabus and RBI assistant syllabus, and officer level insurance recruitment in the LIC AAO syllabus.
Study material that fits this exam
Any standard book for bank and insurance clerical exams covers the aptitude tests well. For insurance awareness, the insurance regulator's consumer education pages and annual reports explain products and terms clearly. Keep a notebook of financial news from a national daily. For the computer test, a basic computer awareness guide and your own practice on office software are enough.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an interview for NICL assistant?
No. Selection depends on the mains score, provided you pass the regional language test, document verification and the medical.
Do my NICL prelims marks count at the end?
No. Phase I only decides who moves forward; ranking uses Phase II marks.
What does the NICL mains contain?
The mains has 200 questions across five tests, 40 apiece in reasoning, English, maths, GA and computers, in 120 minutes.
Can the language test cost me the job?
Your provisional selection is cancelled even if your mains score was high. Apply only for a state whose language you are comfortable using at work.
Is the NICL assistant exam tougher than bank clerk exams?
The aptitude sections are at a similar level. The difference lies in the general awareness test, which leans on insurance, and the separate computer knowledge test.
What is the NICL assistant age requirement?
Between 21 and 30 for the unreserved category under the newest notice, with extra years for reserved applicants. The date on which NICL measures age appears in every advertisement.
