Any MSBTE previous year question paper works as the closest preview you will get of your end semester theory exam, because the board sets each paper from the same course document and specification table every session. For a typical 70 mark theory course, an old paper shows you the choice pattern, the mix of 2, 4 and 6 mark questions and the units that keep coming back.
This guide explains how the papers are laid out, what the board's model answers reveal about marking, a practice routine that fits a diploma semester and where to get papers from official sources. Make sure every paper you use carries your own course code and scheme.

How an MSBTE previous year question paper is laid out
I scheme theory papers worth 70 marks, written over 3 hours, share one fixed layout. The Summer 2019 and Winter 2019 Java Programming papers (course 22412), for example, both used this structure:
| Question | Choice | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Any five of seven short questions, 2 marks each | 10 |
| Q2 | Any three of four, 4 marks each | 12 |
| Q3 | Any three of four, 4 marks each | 12 |
| Q4 | Any three of four or five, 4 marks each | 12 |
| Q5 | Any two of three, 6 marks each | 12 |
| Q6 | Any two of three, 6 marks each | 12 |
The printed instructions usually tell you to answer each main question on a new page, draw neat sketches where needed and assume suitable data. Some papers allow non programmable calculators, while mobile phones and other electronic devices are not permitted.
K scheme courses use the new marks heads (SA-TH 70 plus FA-TH 30), and a few courses, such as first semester Basic Science, have an online paper of 1.5 hours. Check the sample paper or the latest board notice for your own course before assuming the I scheme layout.
What past papers show
Working through three or four sessions of the same course reveals clear patterns:
- Q1 tests recall: definitions, lists, symbols, formulae and short differences. Revise the basics well and this question becomes fast, easy scoring.
- Q2 to Q4 test understanding: explain with a diagram, compare two methods, write a short program or solve a standard numerical.
- Q5 and Q6 test application: longer programs, design problems, multi step numericals or explanations with a labelled sketch.
- Repeats are common: since the paper follows the specification table, the heaviest units supply questions every session, often in slightly reworded form.
The choice inside each question is generous. In Q1 you can skip two of seven, which means you can leave out a weak unit and still score full marks there.
What the model answers tell you about marking
The board's model answers are written for examiners, and reading them changes how you write your own answers. The examiner instructions at the top of a model answer typically say:
- marks are given for key words and understanding, not word for word matching;
- equivalent diagrams, programs and logic are accepted;
- numerical problems earn step wise credit;
- language and spelling mistakes are not heavily penalised.
Each answer also shows a split such as explanation 3 marks and example 3 marks, or any four points at 1 mark each. Use that split as a template: if a 4 mark question asks for advantages, write four clear points rather than one long paragraph.
A practice routine for the semester
- Weeks 1 to 4: collect papers for your course code from the last few sessions and mark every question against the unit it came from.
- Before each class test: solve only the past questions from the units that test covers.
- Last month: write one full paper per course in 3 hours, then check it against the model answer for that session.
- Final week: revise from your own list of repeated questions, not from the whole textbook.
Tejas is in fourth semester Computer Engineering with Java Programming as his toughest course. Sorting three sessions of papers by unit, he notices that most of the long Q5 and Q6 questions came from the same two heavy units. He writes one long program from those units every evening without looking at notes, and his scores on the 6 mark questions improve.
Keep the specification table from our K scheme syllabus guide open while you practise, so that time spent on each unit matches its marks.
Sample questions in the MSBTE style
We wrote the five questions below ourselves, copying the format of a first year Basic Mathematics paper, to show the level of each question size.
- 2 marks: If log 2 = 0.3010, find the value of log 8.
- 2 marks: Write down the formula used to find how far a point lies from a straight line, measured along the perpendicular.
- 4 marks: Find the inverse of a given 2 by 2 matrix and verify that the product of the matrix and its inverse is the identity matrix.
- 4 marks: Find the equation of the tangent to the curve y = x² + 3x at the point where x = 1.
- 6 marks: Find the mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of a given set of ten observations.
Notice how the marks rise with the number of steps. A 6 mark statistics question needs a neat table, the formulae and the final interpretation, each of which carries part of the credit.
Where to find a previous year question paper (MSBTE) from trusted sources
Get papers from official channels so that the course code, scheme and session are correct:
- The board's portal: the MSBTE website is the official source for curriculum documents, notices and, where the board has released them, sample papers and model answers.
- Your polytechnic: departments and libraries keep sets of past papers and model answers for the courses they teach. Ask your course teacher for the last few sessions.
- Your seniors: they can lend printed papers, but check that the code on the paper matches your course, because I scheme and K scheme papers are not interchangeable.
Schemes and course codes are revised every few years. Check your scheme and current exam notices on the official website before relying on an old paper.
Mistakes to avoid with old papers
- Practising from the wrong scheme. A five digit code starting with 22 belongs to the I scheme, while a six digit code marks a K scheme paper.
- Reading answers instead of writing them. The marks come from your written steps and diagrams.
- Ignoring internal marks. Past papers help with the 70 mark end exam, but class tests, practicals and self learning work still decide whether you pass each head.
- Skipping diagrams. Many 4 and 6 mark answers award separate marks for a labelled sketch.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I get an MSBTE previous year paper for my course?
Start with the board's official website and your polytechnic's department or library, which keep papers and model answers by course code. Always match the code and scheme on the paper with your own course.
Are I scheme papers useful for K scheme students?
Only for topics that appear in both. Course codes, units and weightage differ, so use K scheme papers and the K scheme specification table as your main guide.
How many marks is an MSBTE theory paper?
Most theory papers in the end semester exam are for 70 marks and 3 hours, with internal assessment of 30 marks counted separately. Some K scheme courses have online papers of a shorter duration.
What is a model answer paper?
It is the board's examiner guide for a session's paper. It shows the expected answer, the marks for each part and notes on accepting equivalent answers, which makes it a very good tool for checking your own practice answers.
For each course, how many past papers are enough?
Three to five recent sessions is a good target. Solve at least one under the full 3 hour time limit and check it against the model answer.
Do questions repeat in MSBTE exams?
Similar questions often return because each paper follows the same specification table. Repeats are not guaranteed, so use them to find important topics rather than to memorise answers.
