The MPTET Varg 2 syllabus, officially the Madhyamik Shikshak Patrata Pariksha of the MP Employees Selection Board, has two parts in one 150-mark paper: Part A, a compulsory 30-mark section of general Hindi, general English, GK with reasoning, and pedagogy, and Part B, a 120-mark paper in the one subject you want to teach.
Passing this eligibility test lets you apply when the Board holds the separate Madhyamik Shikshak selection test, which has its own subject paper. This page covers both, with topic lists for Part A and the main Part B subjects, the qualifying marks and a short Hindi summary. Teaching exams of other states are collected in the teaching exams section, and the MPPSC syllabus helps with the MP general knowledge part.

How the Varg 2 route works
Madhya Pradesh fills Madhyamik Shikshak posts in two exam steps, both run by MPESB:
- Eligibility test (MPTET Varg 2): the 150-mark paper described on this page. Clearing it with the qualifying percentage makes you eligible. For tests held since 2018 the qualification has been treated as valid for life.
- Selection test: a separate recruitment exam announced with vacancies, open only to those who hold the eligibility. In the latest cycle it was a 100-question, 100-mark subject paper of 2 hours at graduation level.
- Counselling and document verification before appointment.
Sports, music and dance teacher posts follow the same steps but have their own subject papers. For how teacher eligibility tests are built across India, see the TET syllabus overview.
MP TET Varg 2 exam pattern
| Part | Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A (compulsory) | General Hindi | 8 | 8 |
| General English | 5 | 5 | |
| GK, current affairs, reasoning and numerical ability | 7 | 7 | |
| Pedagogy (child development and teaching) | 10 | 10 | |
| B (one subject) | Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Mathematics, Science or Social Science | 120 | 120 |
| Total, 2 hours 30 minutes | 150 | 150 | |
Each item offers four choices, only one of them right. Pick the Part B subject that matches the main subject of your graduation, because that is what the post requires. Part A language and GK questions are pitched at higher secondary level; Part B is set at graduation depth but built on the MP class 9 and 10 curriculum.
Part A topics in detail
General Hindi (8)
- Two unseen passages, one prose and one verse, with questions on meaning
- Hindi grammar and vocabulary at higher secondary level
General English (5)
- Reading comprehension
- Vocabulary: one word substitution, synonyms, antonyms, idioms and proverbs
- Functional grammar from articles and tenses to active and passive voice
GK, current affairs, reasoning and numerical ability (7)
- Current events, India's past and freedom struggle, geography, polity, economy, environment and sports
- Madhya Pradesh history, geography, governance and economy
- Reasoning: analogy, coding and decoding, series, Venn diagrams; numerical ability: number patterns, simple data interpretation, direction sense
Pedagogy (10)
- Growth and development and how they relate to learning
- Learning theories: Piaget, Pavlov, Kohler, Thorndike
- Intelligence and personality and how they are measured
- Gender and social factors, individual differences, inclusive education
- Assessment and identifying learners who struggle or show special talent
Part B subject syllabus
Each Part B paper takes the MP school curriculum for classes 9 and 10 as its base and adds graduation-level depth plus teaching method for that subject. The main areas, as they appear in the subject syllabi:
- Hindi: origin and growth of Hindi and its dialects, Devanagari, the history of Hindi literature from Adikal to the modern period, prose and verse forms, ras, chhand and alankar, grammar and word formation, major writers and works.
- English: unseen prose and poetry, grammar and usage, clauses and transformation of sentences, vocabulary, figures of speech, poetic forms, prescribed MP class 9 and 10 texts and major English and Indian writers.
- Mathematics: number systems, polynomials and equations, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, sequences and series, coordinate geometry and vectors, statistics and probability, and calculus.
- Science: biology (classification, plant and human physiology, genetics, environment), physics (motion, energy, heat, electricity, optics, modern physics) and chemistry (states of matter, periodic table, bonding, equilibrium, organic basics).
- Social Science: political theory and the Indian Constitution, Indian geography and resources, ancient, medieval and modern Indian history, and key world events.
- Sanskrit and Urdu: grammar, literature and texts of the language at the same level.

Varg 2 English syllabus for the language teacher post
If you choose English in Part B, the 120 questions cover far more than the 5 English questions in Part A. Expect reading passages, parts of speech, tenses and agreement, voice and narration, clauses, vocabulary groups such as homophones and prefixes, figures of speech and poetic forms. Literature questions come from the prescribed MP textbooks for classes 9 and 10 and from well-known poets, essayists, novelists and dramatists, plus Indian writing in English. A good part also tests how you would teach these skills in class.
Qualifying marks and a preparation order
In the last cycle you needed 60 percent overall to qualify, that is 90 of 150. MP domicile candidates in the SC, ST, OBC and EWS groups, as well as those with a disability, needed 50 percent (75 of 150); candidates from other states needed 60 percent whatever their category.
Because Part B is 80 percent of the paper, your subject decides the result. A sensible order:
- Cover the MP class 9 and 10 textbooks of your subject chapter by chapter.
- Add graduation-level depth for each chapter and teaching method questions.
- Prepare pedagogy next: its 10 questions are the largest block of Part A.
- Keep Hindi and English grammar and MP GK for short daily sessions.

Frequently asked questions
Is there negative marking in MPTET Varg 2?
In the last eligibility test a quarter-mark deduction was first announced and then withdrawn, so no marks were cut for wrong answers. Confirm in the rule book for the cycle you are writing, since the Board can change this.
Which subject should I choose in Part B?
The subject must match your graduation and the teaching post you want, for example Mathematics if you studied maths as a main subject. You can take only one Part B subject in a sitting.
What is the difference between the Varg 2 eligibility test and the selection test?
The eligibility test only certifies that you can be considered. The selection test is held later against actual vacancies, and its merit decides appointments. In the latest cycle the selection test was a 100-question subject paper of 2 hours.
What is the varg 2 ka syllabus for pedagogy?
Child development and its link to learning, learning theories of Piaget, Pavlov, Kohler and Thorndike, intelligence and personality, individual differences, gender and inclusion, and assessment. It carries 10 of the 30 Part A marks.
Is the MP TET varg 2 syllabus in Hindi available officially?
Yes. MPESB publishes its rule books with the syllabus mainly in Hindi on esb.mp.gov.in.
How is Varg 2 different from CTET Paper 2?
CTET Paper 2 has five 30-mark sections with child development, two languages and a subject block. MPTET Varg 2 puts 120 marks on a single subject. Compare it with the CTET paper 2 syllabus if you plan to write both.
