Loco pilot syllabus: what the railway entry exam covers

RailwayITI or diplomaThree CBT stagesUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The loco pilot syllabus you actually sit is the Railway Recruitment Boards' Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) exam, because Indian Railways does not hire loco pilots directly from outside. You enter as an ALP through two computer based tests and a psychological aptitude test, then move up to loco pilot grades through service, training and departmental tests.

So when you prepare for loco pilot, you prepare for mathematics, reasoning, general science, basic engineering and your ITI or diploma trade. This page explains each stage, flags what the newest notice is reported to have changed, and ends with a Hindi summary.

From ALP to loco pilot

Every engine driver on Indian Railways starts as an Assistant Loco Pilot. The ALP rides in the cab alongside the loco pilot, watches signals, checks the locomotive and learns the route. With years of service, safety training and departmental assessments, an ALP is promoted into loco pilot grades, beginning with shunting and goods work and later passenger and mail or express trains.

That is why there is no separate open exam named loco pilot. Searches for the loco pilot exam syllabus all lead to the RRB ALP recruitment, and its notice is the document to read.

Stages of the ALP recruitment

  1. CBT 1: a qualifying screen. Marks do not go into the final merit.
  2. CBT 2: two papers in one sitting. Part A decides your merit, while Part B, the trade test, needs only 35 percent to clear.
  3. CBAT: a computer based aptitude battery, open only to candidates called on the strength of Part A. Clearing it means scoring a T value of 42 or above on each battery separately.
  4. Documents and medical: the medical standard is A-1, the strictest railway category, with eyesight checked without glasses.

Rank in the final list combines the Part A score with the CBAT score. Earlier cycles used a 70 to 30 split in favour of Part A; the newest notice is said to make it an even 50 to 50. Read the selection clause of the notice you apply under.

Loco pilot syllabus: the three computer based papers

ALP computer based tests
TestSubjectsQuestionsDuration
CBT 1Arithmetic, mental ability and science (current affairs featured in older papers)7560 min
CBT 2 Part AMaths, reasoning and engineering basics, with current affairs in older papers too10090 min
CBT 2 Part BThe trade or branch named on your certificate7560 min

In the previous pattern, CBT 1 had 20 maths, 25 reasoning, 20 science and 10 general awareness questions, while Part A gave 40 of its 100 questions to engineering basics, 25 each to maths and reasoning and 10 to general awareness. Coverage of the newest notice says current affairs no longer appears in CBT 1, with the 75 questions shared equally among the remaining three subjects. Our RRB ALP syllabus page tracks these splits in more detail.

To stay in the race, UR and EWS candidates have needed 40 percent in CBT 1 and in Part A, OBC (NCL) and SC candidates 30 percent, and ST candidates 25 percent. Every figure here should be matched against the RRB notice itself.

Subject wise topics

Mathematics

BODMAS sums, factors and multiples, fractions, proportion, percentages, simple and compound interest, profit, work and wages, train and stream sums, tanks, age puzzles, clock and calendar questions, mensuration, basic algebra, heights and distances, mean and median.

Mental ability

Analogies, series, coding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, Venn diagrams, jumbling, data sufficiency, decision making, analytical reasoning and classification.

General science

School science up to the class 10 board level across its three branches. Electricity, magnetism, heat, work and energy deserve extra time because they link directly to locomotive work.

Engineering basics in Part A

Reading engineering drawings, SI units and measuring instruments, density and specific gravity, energy and power, motion, thermal ideas, circuits and Ohm's law, levers and pulleys, safety at the workplace, environmental awareness and computer literacy.

Trade paper (Part B)

Questions follow the national ITI curriculum for the allied trade, such as electrician, fitter, mechanic diesel, electronics mechanic or wireman, or from your diploma branch.

A preparation order that matches the weight

Engineering basics form the largest share of Part A, and your trade paper is a pass or fail gate, so ITI knowledge pays twice. Maths and reasoning show up in both CBT 1 and Part A, which makes them the best value per hour.

Pooja finished an electrical diploma and now works shifts at a private substation. She gives her first month to maths and reasoning only, aiming to clear CBT 1 comfortably. In month two she revises drawing, units and machines for Part A, and from month three she solves 30 trade questions every evening from her own diploma notes. On weekends she practises CBAT style memory and direction tests for twenty minutes.
  • Get your eyes checked early; A-1 rules out spectacles, and failing it after the CBTs ends your candidature.
  • For CBT 1 science, the class 8, 9 and 10 NCERT books are enough.
  • After each stage RRBs open a window to view question papers with provisional keys; save them for practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct loco pilot exam?

No. Railways recruit Assistant Loco Pilots through the RRB ALP exam, and loco pilot posts are filled by promoting ALPs after service and departmental training.

Which certificates open the door to a loco pilot career?

Matriculation together with a listed ITI trade or a completed Act Apprenticeship. Engineers can skip ITI, since a listed diploma or engineering degree (mechanical, electrical, electronics, automobile and some combinations) also qualifies. You also need medical standard A-1.

How old can an ALP applicant be?

UR and EWS applicants must be between 18 and 30 in recent notices. Add three years for OBC (NCL) and five for SC and ST. The reference date is printed in each notice.

Is general awareness still in the loco pilot syllabus?

It was part of earlier CBT 1 and Part A papers. Reports on the latest ALP notice say it has been removed from CBT 1, so confirm in the scheme of examination before cutting it from your timetable.

Does the trade paper count for merit?

No. Part B only has to be cleared at 35 percent. The CBAT call list is drawn up on Part A scores.

Can I wear glasses as a loco pilot?

The A-1 medical standard required for ALP does not allow spectacles or contact lenses for the vision test. Get an eye test done before applying.
