Prelims, mains and final cut offs by category for AAO generalist

LIC AAO Prelims Cut Off and Mains Cut Off, Previous Years

BankingPrelims out of 70Mains out of 300Updated 26 Oct 2026

The LIC AAO prelims cut off for unreserved generalist candidates was 58 out of 70 in the 2025 cycle (32nd batch), up from 55 in the 2023 cycle. LIC counts only reasoning and quantitative aptitude in that total; English is a pass or fail section with its own small minimum.

Unlike many recruiters, LIC publishes its own cut off sheet after the final result, covering every stage: sectional minimums, prelims total, mains total and the final score after interview. The tables below come from those sheets.

How LIC sets each cut off

There are three hurdles in the Assistant Administrative Officer recruitment, and each has a published line:

  1. Sectional minimums: a floor in every test, set a notch lower for reserved and disabled candidates. Fall short in any one and LIC ignores the rest of your score.
  2. Stage total: after the sectional check, candidates are ranked on the scoring tests and called to the next stage in a fixed ratio to vacancies, category by category. In the latest notice that ratio was about 20 times the posts for the mains.
  3. Final score: mains marks plus interview marks decide the merit list, within each category.

In the 2023 sheet, ties were broken by the combined mains and interview score, then by a higher postgraduate qualification, and finally by date of birth, favouring the elder.

The 2025 prelims were held on 3 and 7 October 2025. Every general line rose by one to three marks over 2023, a sign that more candidates were scoring heavily in the two counted sections.

The mains of the 2025 cycle took place on 8 November 2025. Look at the 2023 OBC, SC and ST mains figures: all three stood at 164, which suggests the interview call reached down to the minimum in those groups. In 2025 the same groups needed 189 to 221, so competition was much sharper.

The mains also has sectional floors, unchanged between the two cycles. For UR, OBC and EWS candidates they were 45 in reasoning (out of 90), 30 in general knowledge (out of 60), 45 in data analysis (out of 90) and 30 in insurance and financial market awareness (out of 60), and the reserved and PwBD figures were 40, 27, 40 and 27 in the same order. The 25 mark descriptive English paper needed 10, or 9 for reserved groups, and does not add to the 300.

Qualifying minimums versus a safe score

A candidate who scores exactly 18 in reasoning and 18 in maths has cleared both sections, but 36 out of 70 is far below any prelims line in the tables. The sectional figures are gates, not targets. The real requirement in the last cycle was about 29 per counted section for a UR candidate, and English only needed to cross 10.

Neha, an EWS candidate, scored 27 in reasoning, 28 in quant and 14 in English in a mock built to the official pattern. Her counted total of 55 would have crossed the 2025 EWS line of 54, but only just. She shifted two weeks of practice to seating puzzles and quadratic comparisons, the two areas where she was leaving the most marks.

At the mains, the four objective tests form the 300 mark total. In 2025, a UR candidate needed 232 there, more than three quarters of the paper, before the interview even began.

Specialist posts have their own lines

Chartered accountant, company secretary, actuarial, legal, insurance specialist and engineering posts are ranked separately, each with its own list and its own stage lines. Their lines vary hugely because seats are few. In the 2025 specialist sheet, for instance, the UR prelims line was 39.25 out of 70 for AAO (Legal) but 16.00 for AAO (CA). Never compare a specialist figure with the generalist table above.

What will move the lines next time

  • Posts in the notice: the 2025 generalist notice had about 350 posts. Fewer posts mean a shorter mains list and a higher prelims line.
  • The 20 times rule: because the mains call is a multiple of vacancies, the prelims line is really a rank cut, not a fixed mark.
  • Paper difficulty: a hard puzzle set or calculation heavy quant section pulls everyone down together.
  • Applicants: LIC AAO attracts many bank exam aspirants, as the patterns are similar, which keeps the prelims line high.
No body publishes an official expected cut off. Read past lines as history, and take posts, ratios and sectional rules from the current notice.

Where to find the official sheet

Open the careers area of the LIC website, go to the AAO recruitment notice for your batch and look for the file titled cut off marks, usually posted with or after the final result. The generalist and specialist sheets are separate. Your own marks appear in the scorecard released with each stage's result.

For the paper itself, see the LIC AAO syllabus, and if you are preparing for insurance and bank officer exams together, compare these lines with the IBPS PO cut off and the OICL AO cut off.

Frequently asked questions

What was the LIC AAO prelims cut off for the general category?

On the generalist list, a UR aspirant required 58 of 70 in the 2025 cycle and 55 out of 70 in the 2023 cycle. Sectional gates of 18 in each counted test and 10 in English applied as well.

Is English counted in the LIC AAO pre cut off?

No. English carries 30 marks in the prelims but is qualifying. Only reasoning and quantitative aptitude, 70 marks together, are added up for the prelims line.

What was the LIC AAO mains cut off for UR in 2025?

The unreserved generalist mains line was 232 out of 300. After adding interview marks, the final line for UR was 294.

Does LIC release the cut off officially?

Yes. LIC posts a cut off sheet for each batch on its website, listing sectional minimums, stage totals and the final score by category. Generalist and specialist posts have separate sheets.

How large is the mains list compared with seats?

In the latest notice LIC said it would call roughly twenty candidates per post, worked out separately for every category. The exact ratio is set in each notification, so check the one for your batch.

Are the cut offs for PwBD candidates lower?

Usually, but not always. In 2025 the visually impaired (VI) final line was 309, higher than the UR line of 294, because very few seats are reserved in that group.
