TeachingMaster's degreeNo upper ageUpdated 26 Oct 2026

The KSET syllabus is split between Paper 1, a common general test of teaching and research skill for every candidate, and Paper 2, which tests the postgraduate subject you choose. Together they make 150 objective questions worth 300 marks, written on the same day without any penalty for wrong answers.

Karnataka State Eligibility Test is the state level route to eligibility for assistant professor posts in Karnataka universities and colleges. The Karnataka Examinations Authority now runs it; earlier cycles were conducted by the University of Mysore. Read on for the format, the units, the subject list and the way KEA draws up its qualifying list.

How KSET is set up

You answer the two objective papers back to back in one morning. For the eligibility list, KEA looks at your combined score across the two papers, then applies a minimum percentage and a rank cut.

  • Paper 1: common to all candidates, built on teaching, research, reasoning and general awareness of higher education.
  • Paper 2: your postgraduate subject, chosen from the list KEA notifies. The latest notification lists about 37 subjects, down from 41 in earlier cycles.

KSET exam pattern

KSET question paper structure
PaperContentQuestionsMarksTime
Paper 1Teaching and research aptitude, general501001 hour
Paper 2Chosen subject at postgraduate level1002002 hours
Total1503003 hours

A correct answer adds 2 marks to your tally, and an incorrect bubble simply earns zero. Recent sessions have run from 10 am to 1 pm, so plan your energy for one long morning rather than two separate exams.

KSET syllabus for Paper 1

Reports on the paper describe ten units, each worth roughly five questions. They follow the same blueprint as the national eligibility test's general paper, which means one round of study serves both.

Paper 1 units and what they ask
UnitTypical question material
Teaching aptitudeAims of teaching, how students differ, choice of method, ways of assessing learners
Research aptitudeKinds of research, the research process, writing a dissertation, plagiarism and ethics
Reading comprehensionOne unseen extract with five linked items
CommunicationVerbal and non verbal forms, what blocks a message, communication in class
Mathematical reasoningSpotting the next term, coded words, proportions, averages
Logical reasoningJudging arguments, inference types, set diagrams, the Indian schools of logic
Data interpretationReading figures off tables, bars, pies and line charts

Because the units run parallel, our guide to the UGC NET paper 1 syllabus doubles as a detailed reading list here.

Paper 2 subjects

Paper 2 is built on your postgraduate discipline. A subject wise syllabus is issued by KEA for every subject, and you should download yours from the official site before buying any material. Subjects offered have included the following groups:

  • Languages: Kannada, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Marathi, linguistics and folk literature
  • Social sciences: economics, history, political science, sociology, geography, psychology, social work, public administration, anthropology, archaeology, criminology, philosophy, women's studies
  • Commerce and professional: commerce, management, law, education, library and information science, mass communication and journalism, tourism administration, physical education, home science
  • Sciences: physical, chemical, life, mathematical, earth, environmental and electronic sciences, and computer science and applications
  • Arts: performing arts, music and visual arts

The subject list changes between notifications. Confirm the code for your subject in the newest KEA bulletin while applying.

Who can apply and how you qualify

Your master's must come from a recognised university, and general merit applicants need 55 percent in it, or 50 percent for SC, ST, PwD and other notified reserved groups. Students still finishing their last year or last semester are allowed to apply provisionally. KSET sets no maximum age.

Your first hurdle is 40 percent of the combined 300 marks in the general category or 35 percent in reserved categories. Even then, the list is capped at the top 6 percent of candidates who sat both papers, with the cap calculated separately for each subject and category as per Karnataka's reservation rules.

Lakshmi, an MA Kannada graduate, scores 128 out of 300 in her first attempt. That clears the 40 percent bar, but the 6 percent cut for Kannada in her category falls higher, so she is not on the list. She shifts her focus to Paper 2, where every extra correct answer is worth 2 marks, and rebuilds her plan around it.

Where to focus your hours

With 200 of the 300 marks, the subject paper settles most results. Paper 1, however, is where good candidates gain quick marks, since data reading, reasoning and the passage questions reward drilling until you rarely slip.

  • Spend roughly 60 to 65 percent of your study time on your subject paper.
  • In Paper 1, lock in the scoring units first: comprehension, data interpretation and reasoning.
  • Leave no blank answers; with no deduction, a reasoned guess can only help.

Sixteen weeks to cover the KSET exam syllabus

  • Month 1: read your subject syllabus line by line and map it to your postgraduate notes. Add an hour a day for the teaching and research units of Paper 1.
  • Month 2: second pass on core subject units with short notes; data interpretation and reasoning practice every evening.
  • Month 3: subject wise objective practice, especially on texts, thinkers and theorems that lend themselves to match the following questions; finish ICT, environment and higher education units.
  • Month 4: full 3 hour mock sessions twice a week on OMR style sheets, plus earlier KSET question papers wherever the authority has released them.

Standard postgraduate textbooks, your university notes and NCERT books for the environment unit are enough for most candidates. Use the official subject syllabus as the checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Will wrong answers pull my KSET score down?

No. Each question carries 2 marks and wrong answers are not penalised in either paper. Answer every question.

Can older candidates sit for KSET?

Yes, age is not a bar. What matters is a master's degree with the required percentage, or being in its final stage.

How is the KSET qualifying list prepared?

You must reach 40 percent aggregate across both papers in the general category, or 35 percent in reserved categories. After that, KEA keeps only the best 6 percent of those present for both papers, counted per subject and per category.

Is KSET Paper 1 the same as UGC NET Paper 1?

The units are closely aligned, spanning pedagogy, research, logic, charts, computers, ecology and the university system. KSET Paper 1 has 50 questions for 100 marks, so preparation for either exam helps with both.

Does KSET make me eligible outside Karnataka?

KSET is a state level test, so it is meant for assistant professor posts in Karnataka. For eligibility across India you need UGC NET.

How many Paper 2 subjects does KSET offer?

The latest notification is reported to list about 37 subjects, compared with 41 in some earlier cycles. Always confirm your subject and code in the current KEA bulletin.
