The JEE Advanced cut off is the lowest mark, both in each subject and in total, that puts you on a rank list and makes you eligible for IIT counselling. In the latest cycle, conducted by IIT Roorkee, the common rank list needed 8 marks apiece in physics, chemistry and mathematics, and 92 out of 360 overall.
Getting a rank and getting an IIT seat are not the same thing. The rank list is only the doorway to JoSAA, where each programme closes at its own rank. Below are the qualifying marks for four cycles, the JEE Main percentile that decides who may write Advanced at all, and how to find the closing ranks you will actually compete against.

How the JEE Advanced cut off is set
Unlike most exams, JEE Advanced does not announce its qualifying marks in advance. After the papers are evaluated, the organising IIT fixes a minimum percentage for each subject and for the total, and applies it separately to every rank list. You must clear both conditions. A strong total with a very weak subject still keeps you off the list.
- Common rank list (CRL): open to all and carries the highest line.
- GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL lists: a lower line, usually about 90 percent of the CRL figure.
- SC, ST and all PwD lists: about half the CRL figure.
- Preparatory course list: for reserved candidates who miss their main list but clear an even lower bar. They may join a one year preparatory course at an IIT.
Because the minimums are set as percentages of the maximum, they move with the difficulty of each paper. The pattern itself is explained on the JEE Advanced syllabus page.
Qualifying marks in the latest cycle
| Rank list | Each subject | Aggregate |
|---|---|---|
| CRL | 8 | 92 |
| OBC-NCL | 7 | 82 |
| GEN-EWS | 7 | 82 |
| ST | 4 | 46 |
| SC | 4 | 46 |
| All PwD lists | 4 | 46 |
| Preparatory course | 2 | 23 |
About 1.8 lakh candidates sat both papers, and 56,880 qualified, the highest count in five years. The aggregate line of 92 was well above the year before, a sign the papers were easier to score on.
JEE Advanced cut off in 2025, 2024 and 2023
| Rank list | 2025 | 2024 | 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRL | 7 / 74 | 9 / 97 | 8 / 86 |
| GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL | 6 / 66 | 8 / 88 | 7 / 77 |
| SC, ST and all PwD lists | 3 / 37 | 5 / 56 | 4 / 43 |
| Preparatory course | 1 / 18 | 3 / 31 | 2 / 22 |
| Exam year | Registered | Qualified |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 1,87,223 | 54,378 |
| 2024 | 1,86,584 | 48,248 |
| 2023 | 1,89,487 | 43,769 |
The 2025 CRL aggregate of 74 was the lowest of these years, yet more people qualified than in 2024. That tells you the line follows paper difficulty, not a target number of qualifiers.
JEE Advanced cut off percentile: the JEE Main step
Before any of this, you have to be among the top 2.5 lakh Paper 1 candidates of JEE Main, across categories. The percentile at which each category's quota runs out is published by NTA, and that figure is the cut off for JEE Advanced in percentile terms.
| Category | 2025 | 2024 | 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open (CRL) | 93.10 | 93.24 | 90.78 |
| OBC NCL | 79.43 | 79.68 | 73.61 |
| EWS | 80.38 | 81.33 | 75.62 |
| ST | 47.90 | 46.70 | 37.23 |
| SC | 61.15 | 60.09 | 51.98 |
The JEE Main cut off explainer adds the PwD lines and NIT ranks. You must separately satisfy the rules on age, attempts and the year you passed class 12, set out in JEE Advanced eligibility.
A rank is not yet an IIT seat
Qualifying puts your name on the rank list. Admission then runs through JoSAA, where every IIT programme closes at its own rank for each category, quota and gender pool. Computer science at an older IIT may close within the first few hundred CRL ranks, while some programmes at newer IITs stay open into the low ten thousands. To take any IIT seat you must also have at least 75 percent in class 12 (65 percent for candidates from SC, ST or PwD lists), or a place among the top 20 percentile scorers of your own board.
The official closing ranks of past rounds are published on josaa.nic.in, which is the safest place to judge your chances.
What decides the next qualifying line
- Difficulty of the two papers. When marks fall across the board, the IIT lowers the percentage, as happened in 2025.
- The marking scheme. Partial marking and negative marks change from year to year and shape the overall spread of scores.
- The size of the field. Only about 1.8 lakh sit the exam, so a few hard sections can shift the line noticeably.
- Weak subject risk. The subject minimum is small, but candidates do fall below it in chemistry or mathematics in a tough year.
Nobody knows the line until the IIT announces it. Any expected JEE Advanced cut off is guesswork, so build your target around a safe rank, not around the qualifying mark.

Frequently asked questions
How many marks does a general candidate need in JEE Advanced?
Last time round, a CRL place needed 8 marks in each subject and 92 out of 360 in total. In 2025 the same line was 7 per subject and 74 in total.
Are the qualifying marks the same for OBC and EWS?
Yes, in recent cycles the GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL lists have shared one line, about 90 percent of the CRL marks. In the latest cycle that was 7 per subject and 82 in aggregate.
What JEE Main percentile do I need for JEE Advanced?
You need to rank in your category's share of the top 2.5 lakh. In 2025 the lines were roughly 93.10 (open), 80.38 (EWS), 79.43 (OBC NCL), 61.15 (SC) and 47.90 (ST).
Does clearing the cut off guarantee an IIT seat?
No. It only makes you eligible for JoSAA counselling. Seats go by rank, and the last admitted rank of most IIT programmes is far ahead of the last qualified rank, which was around 50,000 or more in recent years.
Why do cut off marks change so much each year?
The organising IIT changes, the papers change, and the minimums are set as percentages after marks are known. Tougher papers mean lower marks for everyone, so the line drops, as it did from 97 in 2024 to 74 in 2025.
What is the preparatory course rank list?
It is a list for reserved category candidates who miss their main rank list but clear a much lower minimum. They can be offered a one year preparatory course at an IIT, after which they may join the regular programme on passing it.
