The IMU CET syllabus for undergraduate courses is built on class 12 physics, chemistry and mathematics, with added sections on English and general aptitude, all asked as 200 multiple choice questions in one online sitting of three hours. The Indian Maritime University uses this one entrance test for B.Tech Marine Engineering, B.Tech Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, B.Sc Nautical Science and the Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS), along with separate papers for its MBA and M.Tech courses.
If you want a seat at a sea going course, this test is the door. Below is the IMUCET exam pattern (the imucet exam syllabus and the scheme of marks are covered in the same official prospectus), the marking scheme, the topics in each section and a practical way to prepare alongside your board exams.

Who takes the test and for which course
One undergraduate paper covers the four sea career courses: B.Tech Marine Engineering, B.Tech Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, B.Sc Nautical Science and DNS. Your rank in it is then used in IMU counselling, where you choose a campus or an affiliated institute. Postgraduate applicants for the MBA (port and shipping management, international transportation and logistics management) and the M.Tech programmes write their own papers on the same day.
Clearing the test is only part of the route. Sea going courses also need medical fitness as per Directorate General of Shipping standards, and the age, marks and marital status rules covered on our merchant navy eligibility page.
IMU CET syllabus at a glance: pattern and marking
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Number of questions | 200 multiple choice |
| Sections | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, General Aptitude (some reports list General Knowledge separately) |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Correct answer | Plus 1 mark |
| Wrong answer | Minus 0.25 mark |
| Unanswered | No marks, no deduction |
| Medium | English only |
The IMU CET marking scheme makes guessing costly, since four wrong picks cancel the mark from one right answer. Physics and Mathematics are commonly reported at 50 questions each, making them the two heaviest blocks, but the split between Chemistry, English, aptitude and general knowledge differs from report to report and the university has not published a fixed table in the sources we checked.
Physics and mathematics: the heavy sections
Physics
- Electrostatics: charges and fields, potential and capacitance
- Current electricity
- Magnetic effect of current, magnetic properties of matter
- Electromagnetic induction and alternating current
- Electromagnetic waves
- Ray optics, optical instruments and wave optics
- Dual nature of radiation and matter, atoms and nuclei
- Semiconductor electronics: devices and simple circuits
Mathematics
- Relations and functions, inverse trigonometric functions
- Matrices and determinants
- Continuity, differentiability and applications of derivatives
- Integrals and their applications, differential equations
- Vector algebra and 3D geometry (lines, planes)
- Linear programming problems
- Probability, including conditional probability and Bayes theorem
These lists follow the class 12 NCERT books. Class 11 topics such as kinematics, laws of motion, trigonometry and sequences are not named in the reported list, but they support almost every class 12 chapter, so do not drop them completely.
Chemistry, English and general aptitude
Chemistry
Physical chemistry: solutions with colligative properties, electrochemistry including corrosion, rate of reaction (kinetics), and surface chemistry. Inorganic chemistry: extraction of metals, the group 16 to 18 elements, d block and f block metals, and complex (coordination) compounds. Organic chemistry: halogen derivatives, the oxygen containing families (alcohol, phenol, ether, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid), nitrogen compounds such as amines, then biomolecules, polymers and the chemistry of daily use products.
English
Parts of speech, tenses, word meanings, opposite and similar words, phrasal verbs, idioms and sentence correction. Reading comprehension practice helps too, since the course itself is taught in English and IMU also sets a minimum English mark for admission.
General aptitude and awareness
Logical and critical reasoning, syllogisms, number and letter series, data interpretation, work problems, trains and boats, ratios, clocks and calendars, abstract and mechanical reasoning, plus basic general knowledge and current affairs.
Papers for MBA and M.Tech applicants
The postgraduate tests are separate from the undergraduate paper, and reports put each at 120 multiple choice questions.
- MBA: quantitative ability, data interpretation, verbal ability and reasoning.
- M.Tech: English, mathematics and one engineering section linked to the programme, such as mechanical, civil, marine engineering or naval architecture.
The duration and negative marking for the PG papers were not stated clearly in the reports we checked, so confirm both in the prospectus.
Which topics give the most return
With physics and mathematics making up about half the paper in most reports, these two subjects decide your rank. Within physics, current electricity, magnetism, optics and modern physics are formula heavy and quick to score once practised. In mathematics, calculus (derivatives, integrals, differential equations) and vectors with 3D geometry form the largest group of chapters.
English and aptitude reward speed rather than depth. They are a good place to bank marks in the first hour, leaving the longer numericals for later.
Preparing alongside class 12
Most aspirants sit the test a few weeks after their board exams, so the smart plan is to overlap. Your board study already covers the IMU CET exam syllabus for PCM, and the extra work is mostly speed and the English and aptitude sections.
If you are also writing JEE, the overlap is large; see our JEE Main syllabus page (chapter detail is on our page for the CBSE class 12 physics syllabus), keeping in mind that IMU CET questions are usually more direct and less lengthy. Standard NCERT class 11 and 12 textbooks, a grammar practice book and a general reasoning workbook are enough as resources.
Frequently asked questions
Is IMU CET tough?
It is moderate in difficulty, closer to board level than to JEE Advanced. The challenge is speed, with 200 questions in three hours, and the penalty of 0.25 for each wrong answer.
How is IMU CET marked?
You earn 1 mark per correct response and lose a quarter mark per incorrect one. A blank question neither adds nor subtracts anything.
Is class 11 syllabus included in IMU CET?
The reported topic list is mostly class 12 PCM. Class 11 basics are still needed to solve class 12 problems, so revise mechanics, trigonometry and basic chemistry concepts as support.
Is there an upper age for B.Sc nautical science and marine engineering through IMU CET?
For the latest admission year, reports of the IMU prospectus give 25 years for general category men, with higher limits for OBC (NCL), SC and ST candidates and for women. Age is counted on a fixed date given in the prospectus, so check the current one.
Can I write IMU CET in Hindi?
No. The test is set in English only, and the courses are taught in English as well.
Where is the official IMUCET syllabus published?
The syllabus of IMUCET sits in the prospectus on the Indian Maritime University website, which also the pattern and eligibility. Our merchant navy syllabus page explains the other routes into sea careers.
